I liked the world built and the characters we met in Shadow Magic well enough to pick up this second book, but I wasn't overly impressed with it. Overall, ok.
After reading the first few chapters of Dream Magic, I hunted down a copy of Shadow Magic to read first. These books are to be savored and savor I did! I was initially put off by the dark, deathly setting but soon found the warmth and humor and intrigue. Joshua Kahn slowly reveals clues about the characters through plot twists, keeping the reader guessing and committed. He sprinkles in enough humor to ease the tension and bring the reader closer to the characters. I'm a tutor who will purchase and share these books with my students and with the classes I visit.
I recently finished "Dream Magic by Joshua Khan. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read! I didn't read the previous volume but there were plenty of details in this volume that allowed me to follow along without reading it. Lily and Thorn have so many things thrown at them in the book that you sometimes forget that they are only 12 and 13 years old. They are wise beyond their years and the hardships they face would put most of us in an asylum. Joshua Khan has a very descriptive narrative so it was easy to visualize the settings that were presented to us. There is intrigue, zombies, giant bats, jeweled spiders and did I mention zombies. There is more to come as this is only the second volume in the series. I look forward to reading the next volume.
Zombies, vampires, trolls and gigantic creatures abound in this magical adventure which features one battle after another. Join the young heroes of the fantasy world, Gehenna, as they seek to keep their kingdom from being destroyed. Suitable for ages 10 and older.
