This is the story of Travis, a boy who has been through a serious health scare and must learn to face his fears in order to survive. It's a seemingly beautiful day and Travis and his family on a whale watching expedition. Out of nowhere, a giant wave turns over the boat and suddenly Travis is in a fight for his life, along with Mila, the girl whose father is the boat's captain. A great book for fans of the "I Survived" series.
I am in a 7-12 school but have many readers who still really enjoy The Survivors series and who are looking for easier reads with lots of action and adventure. This new series will fit the bill.
What do you get when you have two kids on a whale-watching trip with their families, a rogue wave, and sudden disaster? You get to join in a quest for survival on a lonely stretch of coastal land in the Pacific Northwest. Ideal for fans of the I Survived series, this title features suspense, drama, and a creative plot line as the kids seek to be rescued.
I have read many survival books for children and this book is not as good as others. I did like the way that they had to work together, but it never explained what happened to the rest of the family. They just showed up at the end and I wondered if they had the same troubles that the main characters had. It was a good book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as others I had read.
The plot is super fun here, with a rogue wave capsizing a whale-watching boat and a main character who has to overcome a particular fear to save himself and the girl with him. There was a lot here to like, though it felt a little lesson-y for me. I was looking for a story (a la Gordon Korman) more than tips on survival. But it should appeal to adventure lovers!
Full review on Goodreads, including the opinion of my 4th grader. I liked the premise of the book and some of the survival tips in here, but I think the overall story and content fell short. Beef it up, and I think you are looking at a series that could really make it big with the younger sect.
This book reminds me of Hatchet and the I Survived series, both student favorites! The story held me spellbound and I cannot wait to share it with my students. They will love the excitement, suspense, and confidence as much as I did. This book is a sure winner!
This is an exciting introduction to a series that is bound to be popular with Middle School readers. Travis and his family are on a whale watch off the coast of Washington State when a freak wave capsizes their tour boat and sends them all overboard. Narrator Travis and the young daughter of the boat captain face one crisis after another as they try to reach land and avoid hypothermia. The two young people show courage and ingenuity, working together to solve these life-threatening challenges. The addition of a friendly harbor seal as a guide relieves the constant tension, especially when the reader learns in the notes that such animal help has been documented. This page turner is just the right length for a young reader looking for an action-packed story. The survival tips at the end of the book will allay any worries readers might have about dealing with a similar situation. and give them confidence to tackle the next thrilling story of the series,
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, captivated by the action from beginning to end. I felt as though I was in the adventure with Travis and Marina, struggling to survive. Survivor Diaries: Overboard! should be very popular with young readers from 3rd through 6th or 7th grade. Best of all, it is part of a series!
A very interesting, informative read! Will purchase this for the library and recommend it to students, especially those who enjoy the "I Survived..." series.
If you enjoy the "I survived" stories this is a similar style. A story about how a kid overcame his fears during life or death circumstances and become a hero.
My eight year old daughter devoured the "I Survived" books. This new series "Survivor Diaries" is sure to be a favorite for kids who enjoy survival stories. This story draws the reader in and engages them with the characters and the story. There are also nice illustrations throughout. What I really like is how the book educates the young reader on what to do if they ever find themselves in a similar situation, such as survival skills, endurance, and conquering your fears. In fact, the book ends with a section titled US Coast Guard Approved Cokd Water Survival Tips that is very informative and practical.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys good survival stories, appropriate for children 8 and up. I received this as a free ARC from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
