This book offers basic guidance on getting one's shit together i.e. being an adult: prioritize, plan, and commit. (I guess I have my shit together more than I thought because this advice seems obvious to me.) The author focuses on finance and work; I would have liked more discussion of dating and relationships. To be fair, I very much appreciate her acceptance that some people do not want a romantic relationship: "You can be hot shit all by yourself..." (Many advice books, and people in general, automatically assume that everyone wants a monogamous long term relationship, which is unfair.)
What sets this work apart from other advice books is the author's voice. She is intelligent, relatable, and fucking hilarious! She supports important points with irreverent humor, for example:
- When discussing how to maintain relationships: "...you could think of your relationship to your family member like you think of your relationship to your leg hair. You don't want things to get all prickly..."
- Why overcommitment is unhealthy: "...look what happened to Joan of Arc. SHE WAS A MARTYR AND SHE WAS LITERALLY BURNT OUT."
The author also demonstrates her GYST theory with vivid scenes from her own life, including having a panic attack because of work stress and dealing with an eating disorder in her youth. This self disclosure feels intimate without self pity, and it makes me want to read more about her life. I like this book as a memoir even more than as an advice book.
Recommended for all libraries.

So I read this self-help book last week and I already don't remember much of what was in it, except for the general theme of actually do the things you need to do to get where you want to go. There was making lists, I remember that, and prioritizing those lists. I haven't made a list yet, but the past week I've been making an effort to actually do the things that will let me get to where I want to go. Maybe. Now if I could just figure out where I want to go with my life, I'd be set.

The book's tone is kind of sassy. It was a quick read. I don't know whether, truly, I needed a book to tell me that doing things works better than not doing things (unless not doing things was my goal), but it was good to have a reminder that my natural state of lazy bump isn't always the best to get things done.

Now off to do things!

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:
After loving Sarah Knight’s debut, The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck, when I saw her new book out I knew I had to read it.
I’ve got a lot of my sh*t together. I pay my bills not only on time, but ahead of schedule. I don’t panic when people stop by the house and throw everything in the closet or have to feign just recovering from a terrible illness because the house is always in a reasonable state of “clean”. I’m pretty well organized and I basically know the big sh*t I need to get done every day and the stuff that is extra sprinkles on the sundae if I DO get it done.
But.. sometimes I need a boost. A reminder. Maybe even a nifty saying or 2 to help me power through and Sarah Knight is the bomb dot com for that!
Did I learn some things? YES! Did I laugh? YES!
Here’s where Sarah really helped me: In my blog life I can be stretched too thin at times. I have so many ideas, friends that I like to give a hand, and a million other things and then sometimes my real life throws a grenade in my blog life (Miss A staying at the house for a week, the internet going down, etc) but I started applying some of Sarah’s tips and I break my blog down in chunks- work on this, build on that and it all works out.
Bottom line: This isn’t “new” stuff. Sarah is not handing you a golden ticket or a lamp with a genie in it. But she’s real, funny and putting things out there to get your sh*t together. Buy it and love it!

Gunter book of the most basic advice.
Get your shit together.
It ain't that hard.
Three fundamental things you need: phone, Driver's listener, wallet.
Everything else is easy.
Great straight forward advice! Loved the first part where the author talked about first starting with no losing your keys! So great!
Knight has a knack for providing common sense advice with a sardonic voice and plenty of cursing. If you're tired of flowery meditative self-help books, look no further, because Knight will take all of your excuses and mercilessly explain how you can start getting sh*t done.
