I was familiar with Elizabeth Bishop and her poetry and most of the supporting characters so I really enjoyed reading this Biography. I was not very familiar with the author and I enjoyed the interspersed autobiography. The biography of Miss Bishop is pretty straight forword. She begins with her rough childhood, her various academics, her time in Brazil and her return to Boston. She describes her struggles as a lesbian, a woman poet and as an alcoholic. The author has done a lot of research and has written a very readable book. The author was a student of Miss Bishop at Harvard in the 70s and writes short essays about her time there. The author also includes a lot of photographs. Anyone with an interest in poetry, poets, women's literature and Miss Bishop will enjoy this book.
