A confused book, where the epic challenge get too mixed up with history and background info. Lot of interesting information, but the result is quite overwhelming.
As we love to explore ancient sites.. I knew I had to read, 'Comrades on the Colca'. The author literally left China, flew to South America, then.. traveled over rough roads, lowered down by rope to a portion of a river that had NOT been traveled by modern man.. EVER. 'Comrades on the Colca'. takes you on this mental adventure in such a way that if you were to close your eyes.. you can nearly feel the spray of water upon your face and body! Toss in some ancient legends.. and you are in for one hell'uva a ride!! I can highly recommend this real life adventure tale for those that are thinking about floating a river.. but, want to kick it up a few notches!!
This is an interesting combination of extreme canyoning, Inca history and modern Polish explorers. Unfortunately, the author is trying to bring in too much and it does get a bit confusing at times. Given the huge challenges (physical and emotional) and the awesome setting, I really wanted to be taken with them on the journey, but every time it seemed to get going, it shifted to the Incan narrative or Polish background, losing the tension. Overall, I felt educated rather than "present" - not a bad thing, it just could have been so much more.
