The Search for Olinguito: Discovering a New Species, is a wonderful non-fiction, science book for children, but I also enjoyed reading about the process. When a scientist wanted to find out more information about the Olingo species, he came across pelts and skulls for an animal that had been labelled an Olingo, but was definitely different enough that he felt it was a new species. When DNA is tested, it is different and when he thinks he might have a new species he continues with his investigation. I loved his investigations into the female Olingo that was moved from zoo to zoo because it would not mate with any of the male Olingos only to find out that her DNA did not match the Olingo's. With photographs and a narrative just right for children, the author describes the discovery of this new species of animals, the olinguito, in the raccoon family. The investigation does not stop there, they need to find one of this species in the wild. They head to Ecuador to find them and then need to study them before they will be believed and as well as have this new species recognized. I found this to be an interesting story. I liked the end of the book that talks about the rainforests and the protection of them. There are resources, a glossary as well as discussion questions included at the end of the book. A great book for introducing Non-Fiction to children as well as for a science lesson when studying animal species, habitats, endangered animals and other topics. I recommend this book to school libraries as well as public libraries.

This was such a cool book because it talks about how a new species was discovered. The thing that was interesting was that it was right in front of people and they didn't realize it. So cool!!

The Search for the Olinguito: Discovering a New Species by Sanda Markle is a non fiction book for children. In 2013 scientists announced the discovery of the olinguito, an adorable relative of raccoons living among treetops in cloud forests of Central and South America. It was the first new mammal species in the Carnivora order to be discovered in 35 years. Learn how scientists solved the mystery piece by piece over more than ten years, traveling to museums all over the world to look at similar species and eventually scouting cloud forests at night. Large photos bring readers face to face with the olinguito in this real-life science adventure.

The Search for the Olinguito: Discovering a New Species is a well. Told non fiction book for young readers. While some of the words will require sounding out or help from a more experienced reader, I think. That many independent readers will enjoy taklng this one on their own. I had never heard of the Olinguito before seeing this book, and was glad to learn of the research and adventure that was had in proving its existence. It was good to. See the efforts and work in proper scientific methods how so clearly and understandably to young readers. It just might inspire them to explore their environment and do research. Maybe reading books like this will help inspire a new generation of dedicated scientists.

The Search for the Olinguito: Discovering a New Species is an or transitional non fiction book great for sharing in a classroom, one on one, or for independent reading. I think the combination of facts, adventure, and beautiful illustrations will make this an enjoyable and interesting read for many.

This book tells the true story of the new discovery of the cutest animal called the olinguito. Only thanks to Kristofer Helgen and a group of scientist's perseverance to find the animal in the South American cloud forest.

This is a great read for older elementary children and can be adapted for a younger audience as well. It's full of color photos and really a book for anyone who enjoys learning about animals and the discovery of new ones.
