Fantastic book. I love how the plot felt really dark and disturbing in places too. A five-star read.

I have read this author before and thoroughly enjoyed her work. This time out, I was less enthused – and I know that my opinions of this title might be unpopular.

The writing was clever, and the author very knowledgeable about her subject matter as she worked with domestic abuse cases when she worked as a CID police detective.

The setting was one I loved. Pontyferry, was a small, neighbourly community in Wales.

The story’s protagonist was a victim of horrific abuse, mostly emotional manipulation, but some physical abuse as well. I wanted to feel more for her than I did, but found I just couldn’t. She seemed complicit in her own fate. This was a school teacher who was very bright, and was blinded by her infatuation at first, but after that, she should have tried harder to get away from Solomon who was clearly a psychopath.

Later, when Solomon was released from prison, she was again made to be complicit in his controlling and manipulative behavior – and his crimes. In my opinion, she had the chance to redeem her situation, yet her fear overcame her brains.

There was an awesome plot twist near the end, yet this if anything, caused me to be even less sympathetic to Rebecca’s character.

The book was a page-turner, yet Solomon’s evil and psychopathic behavior made me want to skim over some of his despicable actions. Rebecca’s plight was horrific, and that was difficult to read at times as well.

If you love tense situations, moral dilemmas, and a plot twist or two, then you very well might love this suspenseful novel. Hopefully, you’ll love it a bit more than I did.

I received a free eARC copy of Witness from NetGalley but that has in no way influenced my review.

I loved this book and I'm kicking myself that it's taken me so long to read it! If you're a writer or an aspiring writer then give this book a read as it's a wonderful example of how to write a truly despicable villain. Solomon Kemp made my blood boil and wormed his horrible, manipulative way under my skin. Absolutely brilliant stuff! I'm a fan of Mitchell's writing and I've read a number of her novels (The Silent Twin | Death Note | Sleep Tight | Murder Game | Silent Victim) so I know a Caroline Mitchell novel will always be hugely entertaining with well-written characters and twists and turns galore. Witness was no exception.

Finally escaping her abusive relationship and leaving her ex-fiance to rot in prison, Rebecca is starting to put her life back together. She's moved to a sleepy town in Wales, changed her appearance and has apprehensively started a new relationship. But her ex, Solomon, is not the kind of man to forget and spends his time locked up plotting and planning his revenge following Rebecca's testimony. On his release ten years later, Solomon starts to play a game with Rebecca, who is now happily married with a four-year-old daughter. Rebecca is a silent witness to ten terrible crimes - one for each year Solomon spent in prison. She must nominate the victim and then stand and watch as the crime happens before her very eyes. Call the police and she will die. Solomon is in control, just as he likes it! As the crimes increase in seriousness and get closer to home, Rebecca has to confront her past and the secrets she holds, before it's too late...

I absolutely loved the concept of this book; ten crimes of different severity, the victim decided by our likeable protagonist, a dastardly manipulator pulling all the strings. Wonderful stuff! Mitchell's writing hooked me in from the get-go and I savoured every minute of this book. When I wasn't reading it, I wanted to be back in the story.

The story is told from three perspectives; Rebecca in the present, Solomon in the present, and Rebecca's diary entries before Solomon's arrest ten years ago. The diary entries are tense reading and certain scenes made me shudder with repulsion. The lengths Solomon goes to to get what he wants is a real eye-opener and Rebecca's slow demise is heart-breaking. She loses everything, including her freedom and the reader can't help but feel for this poor woman who is completely trapped within a real-life nightmare.

I really liked Rebecca but I did struggle a little with how easily she accepted the situation and Solomon's game. She also felt a little naive to me at times but perhaps she had to be for the story to flow as well as it did. I did work out which direction the story was heading from the end of the prologue but I wasn't 100% sure and the book was so darn entertaining, that I didn't really care if I was right! Solomon is the stuff nightmares are made of. Controlling, manipulative, deluded and a total bully. I thought he was a perfect creation and so incredibly well-written. I could feel Rebecca's fear of him, along with Solomon's hatred and his palpable anger. Marvellous stuff!

Would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. Mitchell has done it again with another chilling page-turner of a book and I can't wait to read more from this wonderful author. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers then make sure this one goes on the TBR. Thoroughly entertaining, edge of your seat stuff and I loved it! Highly recommended.

I chose to read and review an eARC of Witness. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

Four and a half stars rounded up to five for Amazon and Goodreads.

This book was fairly predictable with slow pacing and mediocre characters. I read the first half and skimmed through the second half to see how it ended. I was expecting a twisty ending but there were no real surprises. I had guessed the big secret long before the big reveal.

I've read a couple of books by Caroline Mitchell and this one worth reading. I do prefer stories where the culprit is unknown, which is not the case with this book. However, I do think that Mitchell has hit the nail when it comes to the terror of living with a dangerous man. I especially think that the part about Rebecca meeting Solomon for the first time felt like a predator out for a weak kill. Finding the prey's weakness and go for it. It was very chilling to read. The big twist at the end was not that surprising. I was expecting it to be honest. But, I enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to reading more from Caroline Mitchell.

This book had me hooked from start to finish. The subject matter may not be to everyone's taste, but i do recommend. My daughter was once in a relationship with someone who physically and mentally abused her and she will never fully recover, so parts of this story i could relate to. Look forward to reading more by this author.

Although late, i do thank Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, which i have freely given.

This was my first Caroline Mitchel novel, and I must admit it did not disappoint. It was intense and suspenseful, and it far exceeded my expectations. This is a must read if you love psychological thrillers.

Witness by Caroline Mitchell is a standalone psychological thriller which is full of tension and very addictive. This is a gripping story of revenge, of a sad twisted relationship and a victim being played with.

You can tell that Mitchell had a career in the police. Her books are always so believable. Witness doesn't disappoint and keeps you gripped right to the end.

RATINGS: 4
(I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY)
(Review Not on Blog)

This is a standalone novel.

I went back and forth on this books rating, 3, 3.5 or 4. I finally decided on four, as it was easy to finish this book and it was well written. I found the outcome of the book, how it gets wrapped up, a bit of a disappointment which is what had me undecided. Despite all of that, I would still recommend this novel as it is a great read.

I received a copy of Witness by Caroline Mitchell for review in the month of November. I’ve read one of Caroline’s books before now and really enjoyed it so I was chuffed to get the opportunity to have early access to her most recent contribution to the word of psychological fiction. Again, this is one that I’ll be writing a full review for so I don’t want to say too much. I will say, however, that it was a bloody good read and I definitely wasn’t disappointed!

Ten years ago Rebecca was instrumental in sending her abusive boyfriend, Solomon, to jail after he killed one of her coworkers suspecting them of having an affair. Rebecca has rebuilt her life and is living in a small town with her husband, a vet, and her daughter Lottie, but a text from Solomon threatens to destroy her peaceful existence. He sends her a message that for each of the ten years he spent in jail Rebecca is supposed to witness a crime and can choose her victims.

An interesting complex psychological thriller by Caroline Mitchell with a surprise twist at the end that caught me completely by surprise .Overall a 4 star rating and will definitely look forward to reading more by her.

Many thanks to & Thomas & Mercer for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

As I was reading Witness I took to Twitter – mainly to give myself a little break from the words rushing past my eyes. I had to share that Caroline Mitchell’s writing had totally freaked me out and made me uncomfortable and nervous as I sat reading in a dimly lit room somewhere in the wilds of The Netherlands.

Brilliant – you can’t ask for anything more from a book if you get so caught up in a story that you start to get apprehensive over what may (or may not) be in the room alongside you. Checking over my shoulder every few minutes really slowed down my reading pace too!

A stalker drama with some very dark and unexpected twists – creepy is good.

You can not help thinking in this situation what would you do?.
Tackling domestic abuse is no mean feat but this author pulls it off well and it's no surprise due to her former career how she can make it seem so real and make you put yourself there!.
Will Rebecca ever be free from Solomon's twisted sick games as she so desperately tries to rebuild her life, this question is what made me tentatively read on and kept me gripped.
Such a chilling, tense, dark gripping tale that sucks you in and gets right under your skin.
I enjoyed it very much and any fans of this genre must check this book out!.
My thanks go to the publisher, author and Netgalley in providing me with a arc in return for an honest review.

Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read another Caroline Mitchell masterpiece.  The book’s focus is a little sensitive, so it might not be to everyone’s liking, but it was an interesting read, and recommended for anyone that like a thought-provoking read.
