The major concern I had for the book was how the beginning of the book was all over the place. The book starts off telling us the time when Julia heard her parents talking about how tall she is and then moves on to Ramon, her dog (which I had trouble following). Then tells us about her Uncle Jake and Aunt Megan and how Uncle Jake likes to carve. And that is just Chapter One.
The book, for me didn't catch my interest until the author talked about the play and the lack of interest Julia had until she met Olive, Quincy, and Larry. Then I wanted to read more. I felt that most of Chapter One and Two could have been done in flash backs or discussion Julia has.
Until I read the whole book, I can't give a true review. There was enough there to keep me interested and want to see where Holly Goldberg Sloan takes her characters.
Short is Great!
With every page I turned, I fell more in love with the book.
Julia's voice rings completely true for a girl her age and her account is very funny and at the same time also very touching.
When she overhears by accident her parents laughing about her being short, it's such a heartfelt moment.
At the same time, when she sees one of the Munchkins smoking and thinks it's one of the other children only to discover, the "child" has a beard, and is one of the 3 adult actors with dwarfism, it's hilarious.
Julia comes across as lively and bubbly. I felt like she was standing in front of me excitedly chatting away and telling me her story.
It's a story you definitely want to hear.
Short is a HUGEly enjoyable and warmhearted story.
I actually read a short version of Short for Netgalley. It is an interesting story about a young girl who is short, but soon realizes that she has many opportunities no matter how small she is.
Often, those opportunities begin in unexpected places she doesn't necessarily want to be.
This SNEAK PEEK left me wanting MORE!
This sneak peek is great and makes me want to read the book ASAP and then pass it on to my 13 year old daughter!
It's a very nice beginning, with Julia and her younger brother Randy being selected for munchkins in the local production of The Wizard of Oz. I like Julia's matter-of-fact narration, and acceptance of a key aspect of herself--her short stature. I'd definitely read on, given the chance.
Cute little story for children. The main character tended to unnecessarily ramble at times and I wish I could have been able to read the end.
I was only given a sneak peek of Short, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely buy this book for my 12 year old daughter because she's short for her age and this book will be a great way to continue to encourage and know the sky is the limit!
This book is about a "short" girl and her experiences with a dog, brother, family, and the theater. It is written as a personal account of her experiences as an actress in the play "Wizard of Oz," playing a Munchkin. It is a light and fun read and I'm sure will gain the attention of young theater-goers.
