Audrey, otherwise known as Odd, is tired of being bored. Living with her mother in a town where nothing happens, the only adventure she finds in her life is whenever her friend Kite visits. Kite ran away from the circus and every little bit makes his way to Odd’s town to tell her of his stories and perform a few tricks for the locals. But one day, his small performance is overshadowed (literally) by a floating island that has suddenly appeared.
Seeing her opportunity for adventure, Odd drags Kite to board the island and see what’s in store. But suddenly, they find themselves in a totally different world and must make their way home in a strange and sometimes weird land.
Do you ever read those books that after you’re finished you just sit back and think “what”? That’s basically what it was like reading Foreverafter. While it definitely kept my interest and the characters were unique, I found myself feeling like my brain had been scrambled by it all simply because of the strangeness. There is a podcast my husband enjoys listening to called Welcome to Nightvale. This book reminded me of a mixture of that podcast and a bit of Alice’s Wonderland.
K.J. Quint has definitely got me hooked as I would love to see how Odd and Kite find their way out of this strangeness and if they even make it back home.
So magical! I enjoyed this story and have a few children in mind who would enjoy this story as well! So on to my shopping list this title goes! I think it would be a good read for kids 9 and up. Who wouldn't want to travel and have an adventure on a floating island?! Heck, I'd sign up it one appeared! The characters, Odd and Kite are likable and I'm sure kids will easily relate to them. Fun setting and plot! Nice, easy, breezy read.
This was such a fun read! It was really easy to read, despite its length. This book took me on an adventure I never wanted to leave. The two main characters were also very loveable!
This book is filled with wonder and adventure. A young girl listens to the magical adventures of a boy that she wishes she could have. But so she comes upon her own adventure. This book is magic and adventure without a doubt.
Foreverafter: An Odd Adventure, Part One: Crash Landers is a middle grade read by KJ. Quint. Audrey (she prefers Odd) lives in a perpetual state of boredom. She tries to keep busy with small jobs around town and by listening to stories of adventure from a boy in the travelling circus—her only friend Kite. But Odd has always had one thought in her head: I want to go on my own adventure. It appears that Odd's wish finally comes true as a flying island appears over the town and whisks Audrey and Kite away to a far-off place, into a forest of the magical Nightlands where mystic creatures and magical folk roam. It’s up to Audrey and Kite to learn how to master the strange workings of this new world in order to find their way home.
Foreverafter is a fun and interesting read. I liked the world and character building- and think that our main characters and their very distinct personalities is what will capture the attention of readers. Kite is a member of a travelling circus, with a unique skill set and way of talking his way around trouble. Odd (or Audrey) has more skills than Kite knows, but has a way of making plans that create a special kind of chaos. Their adventures, interaction, and quarreling make their friendship something special and great fun to watch. Their adventure is unique and enjoyable, and I think that fans of fantasy and adventure will agree.
My only real issue with the book is that it is too obviously part one. I have a special dislike for books that end just as the book is getting really interesting, or the most important plot twist that will affect the characters for the rest of their story has been revealed. I get the point of a cliff hanger, and I understand the need to bring readers back, but I just feel like the book got its momentum and just stopped. It did not feel like a cliff hanger, but rather like the next chapter was missing. Yes, the immediate crisis was adverted and tensions are raised perfectly for a cliff hanger- but then that extra little bit was there making me feel like this part of the story was unfinished.
An exciting middle grade book. It's cute and I loved the reading. I liked the way the author put the scenarios and the world creation. The plot was interesting and more than that the adventure got me really involved and wishing to be Odd and Kite friends. I want to read the next book, I'm still dreaming about the last chapter. Thank you NetGalley for providing a free copy of this book.
A captivating and original world with great characters! Kite and Odds friendship is adorable and their adventures are incredibly entertaining, especially when things go wrong! I look forward to seeing more of their adventures!
Quirky plot with great characters - I think that my nieces who are 10 would LOVE it!
This was a cute and quite engaging read about a flying island, mystical creatures and magical folks! Really well structired for its intended audience even though I didn't find the main characters as relatable as I thought they were going to be when I first started this book. Overall though this was a good book!
Audrey is a little different.
Some might say Odd. Hence, the nickname. She dreams of adventure away from her poor little town, and she drags her best friend, Kite, into her imagination. One day as they are going about their normal routine, they feel a huge wind and a giant shadow falls over the entire town. In the sky is a floating cloud of dirt! Of course, Odd sees this as her chance, and finds the highest point in the entire town, so that she can jump onto the floating island and make the (*ahem* literal) leap to an adventure!
This story was quite cute.
It was most definitely middle grade, as it was told in a very young and simplistic voice, and the little details weren't stressed as much. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the writing style, and it carried me through the book quite quickly.
The characters were sweet, although a little unbelievable.
I liked Odd's big dreams and Kite's struggle to keep up with her, but I didn't find that it was very realistic. Odd's mother just let the two of them roam around freely all day, getting up to all kinds of trouble, and I don't think they went to school either. However, as it is fantasy, I'm willing to let that slide.
It really was only part one.
The cover has the book labeled as An Odd Adventure Part One: Crash Landers. At just over 100 pages, the book was extremely short, even for middle grade. It didn't really have a clear ending, and I got much more of a "to be continued" feeling than anything. This is okay, but I felt it was somewhat unnecessary, and it probably would've been better published along with the next book as one.
Overall, it was short and quick, but still sweet and enjoyable.
It was just very cute! I don't know how else to describe it. If you like Middle Grade Fantasy and you're okay with a To Be Continued type of ending, I say go for it!
