Wow! New direction! This book has a totally different feel than the others in the series. I always look forward to Shannon's newest book, and this was definitely worth it. With several books to come, this one lays a lot of ground to be explored. Looking forward to the journey, even if I do need to find a "map" to refresh my memory of all the details of the previous books.

If you'd like your series to match, since they are choosing to update the covers, you are able to buy the "signed collector's edition" for the same price as the new updated covers, but in the style of the original hardbacks! But only IF YOU PREORDER BEFORE IT RELEASES ON MARCH 7th, 2017, ON SELECT SITES! I, personally, ordered mine through Bloomsbury: LINK!

(This is totally NOT sponsored, I totally bought this myself after reading the ARC I was sent from Netgalley. I'm just very obsessive about my bookshelves, and I would have been very upset to miss out on this opportunity, so I figured I'd share the information!)

First and foremost, this chart will save your life, especially if it has been a hot second since you've read The Bone Season and The Mime Order:

Next, it's confirmed that the wait for the next book is going to kill me. When I received an ARC of this book, I thought this was going to be a trilogy, little did I know it's actually going to be a seven book series and the wait for the fourth one is most likely going to kill me. I guess there are worse ways to go.

Parts of this book completely broke me. Samantha Shannon really knows how to make her words cut, and she doesn't pull back. I actually felt like everything Paige was losing, I was losing. It's a huge talent to be able to immerse readers the way she does, and for that alone I think it is worth giving this series a try.

AND THE ANGST! Oh, Lord, please, if the waiting for the next book doesn't kill me, the slow burn angst romance will. I am so emotionally invested in Paige and Warden that at this point I can't think of another fictional couple I'd rather have together. Please, just let these little babies have happiness with each other!

Speaking of broken hearts, Ivy and Róisín about ripped my heart out, too. Seriously, I'm unhealthily obsessed with these characters and I need to know everything about them, these precious little cinnamon rolls. Please, Samantha Shannon, please!

The Underground was such an amazing experience to read about! I said in my review of The Mime Order how much I loved Wrynn and the Jacobites, and in this book we get them and a whole other civilization we didn't even know about!

I will say that the first third of this book is a little slow. I was very fearful of what my rating would be until I hit about the 35% mark. Then, I was unable to put this book down, because it was so action packed, eventful, and just so damn good.

The Song Rising picks up right where The Mime Order left off: Paige is now the Underqueen and has so many new responsibilities that revolve not only around saving her people, but saving the world that is unaware of the monstrosities that are coming. Uniting the clairvoyants of London seems impossible, Paige can't even imagine uniting all of Europe, and the thought of uniting the entire world seems so impossible.

“Never allow yourself to believe you should be silent.”

Speaking of uniting countries, some of the themes and quotes of this book should be mandatory reading for all of the United States, right now. I promise, I try to keep my reviews nonpolitical, but I just can't help it lately. Governments lying to people and using scare tactics to only unite fear is VERY real in my world right now. Pieces of fiction like this give me hope.

“Some people believe that if they keep their heads down and stick to their safe routine and trust that nothing bad will befall them, then it won’t. They see things happening to others, but they think they’re different; they’re special; it could never happen to them.”

Also, it would be impossible to read this book and not make a million different comparisons to Paige and Katniss from The Hunger Games. Both are self sacrificing, both are very talented in fighting that doesn't involve strength, and both are the face of their world's uprising. Seriously, I could go on for days about their similarities, and once you notice it, it feels impossible to ignore.

But their similarities aren't a bad thing. Hell, I could read about strong female protagonists that are saving their worlds all day long. Being strong and defiant in the face of evil is a trend I'm looking forward to in 2017.

Another important thing to note is that Paige is traumatized, and is suffering with PTSD throughout this book. I know this series doesn't have a ton of diversity, but it does have some, and I really appreciated seeing Paige dealing with her disorder, and realistically struggling with her disorder. Paige hasn't had the easiest life in this series, and she has had to witness so many of her loved ones die. Traumatic events from her childhood are explored even more in this book, and seeing Paige exposed to more dangerous events is utterly heartbreaking, but sincerely appreciated.

With this third installment, I finally feel like the main story is finally starting to take off. Sort of like Harry Potter, I feel like the fourth books is going to be where we start our uphill climb to the big boss fight. Paige is essentially starting over, and we have so many different threads, in so many different locations. I truly believe this is the start of something beautiful, and the coming together of all these threads is going to be something unforgettable.

Even though I love Paige, this series' shining light is truly the side characters. Samantha Shannon has crafted some amazing characters that you can't help but love and root for. Nick, Maria, Eliza *sings name like in Hamilton*: all phenomenal, and I would preorder and devour any spin-off book starting any of them. As for the Rephaites: Terebell has got me shook and Warden has got me making heart eyes.

Yet, the villains are truly a tier above most YA villains, too. They are complex, and they are mysterious, and they are completely addicting. I have nothing but high hopes for this entire cast in the books that have yet to be released.

“Jaxon had been right about words. They could grant wings, or they could tear them away.”

The next book is going to be such a different reading experience. I can't say much without giving away spoilers, but ME AND MY SHIP, steered by Warden and Paige, ARE SO HERE FOR IT!

I first read The Bone Season precisely three years ago. I waited half an year before buying it because I wanted to get the hardcover. However, I was so impatient that one day I just caved in and bought the large paperback version (not to be confused with the mass market paperback edition). I just couldn’t wait any longer, I was that hyped. Despite the rocky start I had with it, by the end it turned into one of my favourite novels. Then came The Mime Order which was even better. It was so spectacular, I read it three times – and I never reread books, unless they’ve completely blown me away. To this day I completely swear to this series and cannot recommend it enough. And let me tell you, if you thought nothing could peak over The Mime Order – think again.

The Song Rising is the highly-anticipated third book in The Bone Season series. Paige’s story continues exactly where we left it – when she and, consequently the audience, learns of a terrible truth and a shocking betrayal. But Paige has no time to recover from that revelation as she’s now Underqueen – and her reign is already collapsing before it has even had the chance to begin. Paige and her trusted allies must keep the people of the London criminal syndicate together all while simultaneously looking for a way to destroy Scion’s newest weapon that may just be the end of clairvoyance as they know it. Embarking on a dangerous mission, Paige will have to go to near impossible lengths if she wants to keep her people safe

This book is quite easily number one in my most anticipated 2017 books list. I’ve been waiting for so long that at one point it felt like the song will never rise *hehe* but here we are and, boy, did it RISE. Honestly, after getting blown away by The Mime Order, I was positive that now I’ll be ready for anything Samantha Shannon throws my way. I was wrong. So very, very wrong. The Song Rising not only surpassed The Mime Order, but it’s the paranormal sci-fi book to end all paranormal and sci-fi books. Or just books in general. Trust me when I say you definitely NEED this book, like yesterday.

Shannon’s writing in the first book is a little unsteady, but it’s understandable since it was her first book. Not only that but the whole universe she’s created is one huge bite to swallow. Nevertheless, the writing gets better page after page, book after book. The Mime Order is a testament to how much a writer can improve in such a short while. And The Song Rising is proof that a writer can really kick the ball out of the park so hard, the ball sets itself on fire and explodes. I still can’t believe what an eye for detail Ms. Shannon has. You can tell that there’s been a lot of thought put into literally everything in The Bone Season universe and all its characters. I can’t help but applaud Samantha for the absolutely brilliant job she did with her previous books and topping that with this one.

I can’t say much about the story itself without spoiling The Song Rising and/or the previous two books, but I will say that it’s absolutely amazing. There’s never a dull moment throughout the whole novel and by the time you finish, you’re left feeling breathless and exhausted – but in the very best way. The Song Rising is such an emotional rollercoaster, packed with so much action and intrigue and angst and politics and it’s so, so beautiful. Every page is a masterpiece.

Listen, if you didn’t love Paige Mahoney before 1) how dare you? and 2) you’re about to ADORE her after this book. She’s one of the most strong-willed, determined characters I’ve ever read about and her resilience in this book left me gaping with awe. I love her even more now, which I didn’t was possible but here we are. Don’t get me wrong, every character was amazingly fleshed out and brilliant in their own way, but this book was purely Paige. I’ve seen reviews saying how she makes some questionable, not very good choices in this book that had me really worried before I read The Song Rising. Now I really want to fight those people, no exaggerations. All the decisions Paige makes are incredibly hard, but, I felt, necessary. All of them were made in order to protect her people and the voyant population as a whole. There was nothing “questionable” about them. They just proved how good of a ruler Paige is – she always put her people first, even if they didn’t want to acknowledge that. If it wasn’t clear before, I love Paige Mahoney and will fight anyone and everyone who disagrees. (Also, Samantha, please give her a break. Poor girl’s been through enough. Write some happiness in for her. I’m not above begging, bribing and/or selling vital organs.)

An honorable mention goes out to my home girl, Ognena Maria. After years and years of seeing Bulgarians being constantly painted as savage, primitive, crude bad guys, it was so refreshing to see a Bulgarian character written as an actual human being. (This is not technically a spoiler, but I gotta mention it – a moment of pride because the small Bulgarian phrase I helped Samantha out with on twitter a while ago actually made it into the story! Not gonna lie, I screamed.)

I feel like this review is just me raving on and on about how amazing The Song Rising is, but I can’t get myself to feel any regrets about that. The Song Rising really was amazing. More than amazing. It was *Lady Gaga voice* talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique. Thank you, Samantha Shannon, for all the blood, sweat, and tears that you’ve poured into this book. Thank you for giving us your all. (But definitely not thanking you for that ending because what even was that? You don’t end a book like that!) Still, it was worth waiting so long for this third installment. So, so worth it. I can’t wait to see where the tides will take Paige next. (Hopefully somewhere where there’s a warm bed for a well-earned rest. Just a suggestion.)

Wow! Just Wow! I love this world so much. It is simple but complex. Samantha Shannon has done an amazing job in world building and her characters are tough as nails. Paige Mahoney doesn't disappoint in her leadership of the Mime Order. We see her struggle to make the right decisions for the Mime Order but every move she makes brings them closer to destroying Senshield and taking steps toward freedom. We get to see more of the world and more of key character backgrounds in The Song Rising which I love. It makes the characters that much more real. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings us!

After beating Jaxon in a bloody battle, Paige is now the Underqueen. Now, Paige and The Mime Order must face Scion's newest technology, Senshield. Able to detect any unnatural, Senshield will be the death of the underworld if they can't find a way to stop it. I always hope to connect with the characters in a book. I love rooting for Paige, Nick, Eliza, and Warden. And, I also love to hate characters like Jaxon. This series is so unique, and that's one of the things that makes it so great. I was worried I would have forgotten what happened in The Mime Order having read it quite a while ago, but as soon as I started reading, everything came back to me. I remembered why I love this series right from the start.

This was the third book in the Bone Season series and the third book that I've read. While I don't remember a lot about the first two books, I do remember the basics. No names, just bits here and there. So, if you haven't read the first two, I don't think that would be a problem reading this one. Apparently, there are going to be a total of seven books in this series.

I found this book to be very entertaining, enjoyable and it really held my interest. There were times when the book would refer to past events, but it would also explain most of what those events were. I really found myself rooting for the Underqueen and her Mime Order especially after hearing what they had gone through in the past and what they were currently going through.

There were a lot of evil people, two especially, who after this group and they were not nice about it all. One person wanted to take over and the other person wanted to do away with them all together. This has been a great series so far, I know I don't remember a lot about the first two books, but I do know that I enjoyed them.

Huge thanks to Bloomsbury for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Just like the first two books in this series, The Song Rising is an imaginative and absolutely brilliant dystopian fantasy story. It is action packed from page one. There are so many layers to the plot that push the story forward but doesn't make it hard to follow. The romance of the two main characters, Paige and Warden, is not overdone and sappy. I look forward to the next four books in this series.

Since the first book, Bone Season has become one my favorite series. In the world of writing Samantha Shannon is a natural. Her words flow on the pages and you cannot stop reading.
Third book starts after what happened in the second book. Scrimmage has ended and by defeating Jaxon, Paige is Underqueen. She selects Nick and Eliza as her mollishers and some of most loyal mime lords/queens as her commanders, but it’s extremely difficult to unite the London syndicate, there are many people in unnatural assembly who prefer Jaxon to replace her, despite the fact that Jaxon was behind lots of suffering voyants endured.
She also need to deal carefully with Ranthen, the Rephaite people who now work with humans to destroy Scion and Sargas. Rephaite’s leader Terebell is not fan of humankind specifically Paige, so she needs to prove herself.
Like its two previous book, this one is full of twists and actions too. So many dangerous moments happening in a few pages plot and somehow you buy it. It’s not hard to connect to what happens in this book.
Everything becomes even more complicated when the most vicious commander in whole Scion comes to London for the sole reason of destroying the Mime Order, Hilliard Vance. She is an excellent mind reader and uses everything to achieve what she wants. She has no conscious and knows Paige too well.
I really like Paige character, she is what a 19th years old in her situation is. Not too perfect, not too weak. Full of excitement, rage and even ambitious sometimes. She does her own mistakes but doesn’t quit until she finds a way out of it. Her relationship with Warden is reasonable and her decisions toward this relationship is what expected of her. Supporting characters like Nick, Maria, Tom and others have a believable and steady appearance through the story and helps carry the weight of the plot well.
I really enjoyed this book, and really I can’t wait to read the next book.

An incredibly exciting, action-packed and heart wrenching third instalment in this brilliant series.
I enjoy these books as singular novels but as we move forward in the series the world of Paige Mahoney becomes richer and deeper, there are no two dimensional characters and as the world expands beyond England you find yourself completely immersed in it.
Paige is dealing with becoming the new leader of the underground voyant world and while dealing with her own insecurities and enemies, she has to try and outsmart a new SenShield created to track and imprison voyants.
A roller-coaster of a story and I honestly cannot wait for the forth book!!!

The Song Rising is one of my most anticipated reads of 2017 and it didn't disappoint. At the end, I was left stunned and in awe of Samantha Shannon's writing. I'm already counting down the days until The Priory of The Orange Tree is released.

The book begins immediately after the events at the end of The Mime Order. Paige has beaten Jaxon and become Underqueen. Additionally, Jaxon has been revealed as the traitor from the initial Ranthen rebellion. The Song Rising follows Paige's reign as Underqueen as she attempts to protect her people from the new version of Senshield.

Paige is still an incredibly complex and well-developed character. As she grows and changes in this novel, the reader sees the reasoning behind her decisions. Even though some of her decisions are heart-breaking (and I didn't 100% agree with them), Paige always truly believes she is doing what is best for her people. The juxtaposition between Paige's growing power and that of a new nemesis show Paige's true strength of character and goodness of heart. Her complicated relationship with Warden progresses in this book and continues to delight. Paige is a wonderful character who is easily one of my favorite heroines.

I absolutely loved how Paige explored new parts of the country in this book. Her adventures outside of London and the penal colony really fleshed out the world for me and gave me a better idea of the scale of the war they are now fighting. It was very interesting to see how clairvoyants lived in the different environments. This also allows for new secondary characters to be introduced and for old secondary characters to be further developed.

The plot is utterly brilliant. It's twisty, dark, and tangled. The political aspect is wonderfully intricate and yet explained so well that the reader has no trouble understanding. I didn't see some of the twists coming. The ending was entirely unexpected and, although it wrapped the plot of this book up nicely, left me with questions. This book sets the stakes high for future installments in this series and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Song Rising was a gripping, intense read that I absolutely loved. I would highly recommend both this book and the first two in the series. Definitely a 2017 release that you do not want to miss.

The wait for the third book in my favourite on-going series has been torture, but in the end it was worth it. The Song Rising met my expectations, with its killer twists and shocking revelations. It was my first five star book of 2016 and I wasn't even surprised! As someone who is bored of typical dystopian fiction, this series is a breath of fresh air. The way it mixes urban fantasy with dystopia just works. Utterly compelling, it's like no other dystopian series I've read before.

The Song Rising picks up where the previous book left off. Paige is trying to bring together the underworld, which is no easy job. She wants change and with change comes hard decisions. Some decisions she comes to regret as they back fire, and this sometimes makes her doubt herself and her ability to be Underqueen. At the end of the day, though, she knows she has to shoulder the responsibility and learn from her mistakes. Her continued growth amazed me, and I'm sure there's more to come as the series progresses.

Some may find the pacing of the first half of the book slow as there's not a ton of action. As with the previous book, however, I didn't mind the pacing. I found every page of The Song Rising to be fascinating. The world-building expanded in this instalment of The Bone Season series, and it added even more layers to the story. We finally see Paige stepping out of Scion London, and exploring Scion Edinburgh and Manchester. I found the snow filled journey and exploration into both places interesting as they differed quite a bit from Scion London.

In regards to Warden and Paige, whenever these two were in a scene together there was this palpable chemistry, it didn't matter whether they were talking, not talking, or making out. They just have this amazing slow burn romance. I can say hands down that they are my top ship at the moment. They work so well together, and even when problems arise in their relationship I like that Warden doesn't push Paige. He fully supports her and knows when to step back.

I loved the winter atmosphere in The Song Rising, and it was exciting to see the sparks of revolution being set into motion. The last half of the book especially was full of surprises, including a death or two! With the way things ended I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!

I misread the archive date and did not download this title in time. I apologize for not being able to review it. I am still looking forward to reading it once it publishes.

I read the first book in this series, The Bone Season, when it first came out. I enjoyed it, but not enough to pick up the sequel, The Mine Order. I was still able to follow the third book in the series by reading a summary of the book I missed. This book was an improvement on the first in the series, which I found disturbing, mostly because of the depictions of slavery and Paige's relationship with her "master." The Song Rising was shorter than the previous books. The plot was tighter and there were no loose ends. I'm finding the overall plot a bit convoluted and I hope the author pares down the villains in future installments.
