There is much that can go wrong with a Piers Anthony book. I have loved everyone of these books that I have read, and this was no exception. This books was chalk full of humor and puns which seems to be a trade mark for these books.
Ghost Writer in the Sky (Xanth, #41)
by Piers Anthony
Never to disappoint new readers can get lost in Xanth again as they follow two mundanes as they try to solve one of the mysteries of magical land. The new readers will find indication of other stories, and old readers get the reminder of their favorite stories. Like all Xanth stories the Puns are profound. It is an uproarious laughter when the puns are the cause of the problems, or the solution to them. This is a lovely jaunt in a land of mischievous nature. This book stands entirely on its own, just allowing the reader to begin again their love affair with Xanth.
Piers Anthony continues his long-running Xanth series with Ghost Writer in the Sky. The Night Colt is cooperating with a ghostwriter to rewrite Xanth fairytales. Two Ordinary People from Mundania are enticed to come to Xanth and undertake a quest to stop the Night Colt. Lots of puns and romance along with colourful characters. Highly recommended.
After only a few pages I realized that this was not a book I would be interested in and stopped reading it.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book courtesy of Net Galley and Open Road Integrated Media, the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus pages.
I requested this book as I am a fan of fantasy and science ficition. I have read a number of Piers Anthony's other Xanth novels.
I found this latest in the Xanth series vey enjoyable. It is a quick read and the use of puns troughout the book makes it interesting and causes a slight pause at times to understand them. The author does a good job of weaving the the time dimesion travel and the interface between Earth and Xanth into the storyline. It is helpful if you have read at least some of the prior Xanth novels, but not necessary as this book will function as a stand alone novel.
I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and science fiction who are looking for a different twist on the story (use of puns) and for those who are fans of Piers Anthony.
I remember how much fun Piers Anthony's Xanth novels are to read, but at the same time, I realized as I started this one how much I had forgotten how much fun they are to read. I loved meeting Goar, the Night Owl working as a Night Watchman who has aspirations to be a writer. This is one of those authors who I would love to meet and just sit and discuss the World of Xanth with him. I was introduced to him in the mid-90's and have been reading and re-reading him ever since. This book is full of his normal puns and is so much fun to read. I loved the names of the seven genies for Goar's book start! I could not stop laughing. All the starts of various stories that Goar comes up with makes me think about how I might feel trying to start my own book. I love the Night Colt and his deal that he makes with Goar. It is fun watching the various Fairy Tales that Goar comes up with, how they differ a bit from those we would know in real life in the realm of Xanth. We get to visit some of my old favorite characters such as Princess Eve, her twin Dawn, Zosi Zombie, Demon Xanth, and others. How are Tara and Tartan introduced to Xanth? Why are they? Will they do what is asked or do they walk away? Read and find out! If you've never read one of these books before, get ready for a really 'punny' experience.
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M. Brennan.
I remember reading Piers Anthony and his Xanth series of books in high school. I love the play on words - Nigh mares - horses that deliver bad dreams. Good quick read. I enjoyed all the books in this series
I can't believe he is still writing Xanth novels. This was not disappointing. I love the take on this with a budding author partnering up with a wanna-be night-mare. Not much else to say without giving it away. You don't have to have read any previous Xanth novels. It's enough to know that this author loves taking words and making things literal in this magical kingdom. My all-time favorite is bootrear...like rootbeer, but it feels like you get a boot in your rear - lol. Anyway, our main character is trying to write, but he's got a severe case of writer's block. Enter the nightcolt, he wants to be the nightmare and suggests a team effort. But what happens in Xanth? You'll have to see!
It's a light hearted fantasy novel, lots of laughs and some good adventure. You can't go wrong here if either of those is your thing.
This is my first look at this great author! Loving the world-building and truly hoping for more!
Well, for some reason, I found it hard to get into this one at first, but I am so glad that I did. I have enjoyed his work for many years, including the Incarnations series.
It is definitely a more mature work and includes a lesbian romance. There are lots of “ellipsis” moments. I got a chuckle when one character was referred to as mistress of the ellipsis.
One of the highlights was the incarnation of the Adult Conspiracy, and his defense of it. I thought it masterful and concise.
There is a fair amount of summation of some of the old stories, but it is well done, and helps those of us who may have missed a story or two, or bring to mind the details of one so that the plot point makes sense.
Puns abound, of course. It is amazing how many have been used over the years, and how many more arise. Caprice Castle, one of my favorites, appears and disappears. I heard a faint whooshing sound, ala the Tardis, in the back of my imagination as it faded away.
The way Mundanes were incorporated into Xanth was great. I wish I could find a painting portal. The added layers of complexity resulting from this were most interesting.
It’s hard to believe that Piers is over 80, and still producing. I love the author’s notes, and I think a Xanth movie series would be spectacular, if done correctly.
