The Case of the Team Spirit introduces a group of British tweens involved in a mystery. A series of strange events leads some people to believe that the local Tackleford City Football Club is cursed. Meanwhile, plans for a new stadium are being blocked by tough old Mrs. Biscuits. Six students become unlikely detectives, unraveling the case while navigating life as first-year grammar school students. John Allison is one of the funniest comic book authors working today. He never ceases to amuse with clever, yet believable turns of phrase. I have yet to find a page I didn't at least guffaw or chuckle at, that is when I wasn't snort-laughing. These are like the quirky, ludicrous adventures of mad teens, who are equal parts Scooby-Doo and Tank Girl.
'The Case of the Team Spirit (Bad Machinery #1) by John Allison brings us another story from the group of school kids living in Tackleford, England. It's another winner in the series.
A new football stadium is being built in town and the mysteries abound. Shauna, Charlotte, and Mildred want to help an old lady they've nicknamed Mrs. Biscuits to keep her house. The stadium people want to tear it down and she just wants to be left alone.
Meanwhile, the local football team seems to be victim of some freak accidents and Jack, Linton, and Sonny think there might be a curse involved. Of course, this being Tackleford, there is usually something supernatural involved.
There are also lots of laughs as these school kids are full of snarkiness. There is an incident with a bully that steals a coat that is pretty hilarious, and I found lots to like in this volume. There is a glossary of terms in the back for non-British readers not familiar with some of the slang. There are also a series of newspaper articles about the history of the Tackleford sports team. I enjoyed this as much as the other volumes in the series I've read.
