Thank you for the opportunity to review this title. Unfortunately in this case I found it difficult to connect to the story. As I didn't completely finish this book I will not be publishing a review. We do not review uncompleted books on the blog, and again, thank you for sending through a review copy. Although this title didn't work for me, I do look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Rec'd for the public library and they bought it! It's been popular.
I was incredibly slack with this book - I read it quite some time ago - loved it - laughed out loud and was highly entertained but didn't write a review. I received a copy through NetGalley to read in return for an honest review and recently I saw the sequel come up and thought, oh my, that was quite remiss of me not to sound the trumpet loud and strong about how good this author is and how good this book is as a rather sophisticated rom-com story.
My only criticism back when I first read this book was that it ends on a very very large cliffhanger (like a good television series) and I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. Now I do have the next book to read and my world is the right way up again.
This book is set in a reality where no one actually gets married instead they connect with their partner through contracts that last seven years. At the end of the seven years, you can sign up again or walk away from the relationship. Kate seems to be in a bittersweet point in her life - she is pursuing a career that may or may not work out (she certainly doesn't want to get involved in contract law - but she doesn't seem to have many options) but all is well in her personal life - Jonathan loves her to pieces and she is absolutely sure that he is about to sign up to stay the distance with her. But life sometimes is more bitter than sweet and Kate is about to find out that things can get a great deal worse.
I really liked Kate - she has oodles of personality and is quite honest about the mistakes she is making. She is every conversation of I have had with myself that tomorrow I will sort it out but tomorrow never quite gets here. As Kate stumbles into a friendship with Adam - a man who has no interest in contracts - you are delighted that she now appears to have someone who is worthy of challenging her on so many levels. Genuinely this is a laugh out loud story that has you waiting for the sizzle and pop!. If you like an intelligent romance with a strong side of humour than absolutely grab this book. (Then quickly snag the sequel.)
It was different and it was fun to read. The characters were quirky, fun and lovable, but also full of romance.
This book was really interesting. I look forward to reading more from this author!
This was just plain weird. Couldn't bring myself to finish it.
For a first book, Ms Lyon has hit it out of the park. This is brilliantly snarky, with witty banter, and a truly smart dialog that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of hilarity, cynicism, discovery of self, and an interesting looking at relationships and the alternative to marriage. The premise is unique, but understandable and relatable. Twist and change a few phrases and words, and voila!...you have Contract Marriages.
With a different view of relationships and the byplay between partners, this concept is intriguing and worthy of exploration. The characters are so well defined, with dimensions that clearly were so well thought out, that they become more than words on a page. The chemistry created between Kate and all three men in her life is real, without using expressive sexual scenes to ratchet up the heat, the author has still created that heat by creating the setting and letting the good old imagination take over. I'd rather have my own view then that of the author's...and Ms Lyon has excellently executed the way to allow me that. The sexual aspects of the story are not the core of it for me, the relationships themselves are.
The following is a small sampling of what drove me to simply love Ms Lyon's writing for its uniqueness and humor - it is an exchange between Adam and Kate following her first day at work as an Attorney, and a bit of an altercation(!):
“Girl Scout cookies?” he asked, with an amused expression.
“Thin Mints are my favorite,” I said, unapologetically.
After handing me one, he took one for himself. “Why are they cold?”
“Because Mom stockpiles them in the freezer. She’s hoarding them for the apocalypse. She thinks they’ll be the new currency.”
He laughed. “It’s important to plan ahead.” He looked at me a moment before continuing. “Well, here’s to your new job,” he said, frowning.
Now that an emotional connection has been made with Kate, the next book in the series cannot come quickly enough...darn those cliff hangers! I am now looking at adding this author as a favorite "Up and Comer" on my watch list.
This book was provided by the Publisher and Netgalley, I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
If I had known it would end in a cliffhanger I would have not requested, not that I do not have others that have left me the same way, but this one, I can not see myself wanting nor caring to read the second half. I am not saying it was bad, because it wasn't and it was funny. I also liked that it was a different concept, in this world no one marries they sign contracts, and decide if they want to re-sign. Kate was in a contract with Jonathan who decided he did not want to resign, he wanted out. While she was in the contract she meets the contract killer also known as Adam, he is interested of course, but the minute she is out of contract he decides he is not. I will not tell you the rest, you have to read it for yourself...
Kate was starting over at thirty four. Starting over with a brand new career as she had went to law . school and passed the bar but so far no attorney’s job.Kate was at a bar with her best friend Logik always seemed to say the right things at the right time. Kate’s with Jonathan who had been great supporting her through this rough time. Kate had interned at the DA’s office but someone else to hire. Logik and Kate have been friends since H S. Logik had been signed five times and not once had she went full term with her partner. When you sign it is suppose to be for a full seven years and then you can reop if you and your said partner want to. Logik was talking to someone at the bar then a very hot man stepped up to Kate and introduced himself as Adam and said he was with marketing with Samson and Tule. Kate doesn’t want to be a signing attorney even though her uncle reminded her there was a place for her at his firm. Kate didn’t want to work with bitter and angry couples. Kate agreed to meet Adam for coffee as he said he would help her with her job search. Then Adam offers Kate and administrative assistants job at Samson and Tule . Jonathon had just let Kate know he was not resigning up with her. Adam got Kate the job and had been hitting on her and Kate let him know she thought he was broken. But once Adam knew Kate was soon to be single he lost interest in her but he did want her as a friend and he had no female friends. Kate took the job with her uncle as she would be supporting herself now. Jonathan kept contacting Kate but she wasn’t going to be the one to let Jonathan have his cake and eat it too. She already had goodbye sex with him she wasn’t going to repeat that even though she really wanted to. Kate sets in on her first case and ends up wit a black eye when one of the clients tried to hit his cheating partner. Adam came over to make sure Kate was okay and then Jonathan showed up with white roses which was Kate’s favorite rose. Jonathan asked Kate if she was seeing Adam . Jonathan asked Kate if he signed another contract if she would take him back. Kate didn’t have an answer as she knew she would have to stop being friends with Adam as if she was once again signed to Jonathan Adam would again come after her and now Kate had a crush on Adam.
I loved this story right up until the very end as it ended in a big cliffhanger and boy was I mad. I hate cliffhangers. Oh well hopefully will catch the next part of this story. I liked how Kate was suddenly being noticed by hot men and Jonathan regretted his decision he deserves that. I love Kate’s and Logik's relationship and how she is there for Kate. If it wasn’t for that ending this would have been a five more than likely. I loved the plot a lot as well as the characters and the ins and outs of this story and with a warning about the ending I recommend.
In this book, the first in the Contract Killers series, the world is the same as today, but with one big difference; there is no such thing as marriage, instead people “sign” with someone. This is basically the same as marriage only it has an end date; 7 years. After the 7 years is up you can either part ways or reup the contract for another 7 years.
Kate is at the end of her 7 years with Jonathan, the love of her life, and assumes they are going to reup…until he tells her otherwise. Now she is a broken hearted newly qualified and unemployed attorney in her 30s living with her parents. And just to make her life more complicated she may be falling in love with a contract killer, a person who only “gets involved” with people who are signed.
I know titles are supposed to be short and snappy…but I find I am attracted to the long and snappy ones, historical romance seems to do this especially well. I can’t wait for someone to finally bring out: The Day the Duke Tripped Over the Fence & I Fell in Love, I’ll be all over that! Which, is why I had the burning urge to pick up this book, with the rather cumbersome, yet eye catching title of: I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions.
So, my thoughts on this…the big one is: I thought this had a HEA! I figured each book was going to be a different character in the series finding their one true love and all the drama that that encapsulates. Instead it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with me screaming “Noooooooooo!” to the ceiling. Does Kate figure which of the platoon of guys chasing the lucky biatch she’s going to settle on and they fall madly in love? No. That doesn’t happen. At least not yet.
The amount I enjoyed this book did surprise me, one because of the above and two because there is some kind of weird love triangle/square thing going on. Which is something I normally avoid at all costs, it ends up bugging the life out of me. It still might with this series, but at the moment I’m okay with it and I can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens next.
I liked this book because of another triangle it had; My Golden Triangle (yes it deserves capitals), and everything contained within that triangle I am bound to at least like. My Golden Triangle: humour-that-actually-makes-me-laugh; sexy-alpha-male-I-don’t-want-to-kill; heroine-I-can-stand, it also upgraded a little to The Golden Square (yes more capitals!) and had an interesting idea.
The reason I didn’t give it more than 3.5 stars is because although I could stand the heroine, I did find her a little irritating at times, but I believe that stems from it being told in first person, the pressure to make every sentence witty must be intense and yet I often find, with UF being the exception, that this leads the book to seem like it’s trying too hard. Also, love triangles, I am naturally an impatient person and so I spend most my time during love triangles irritated that people won’t just make up their bloody mind and get on with it. And those feelings started to come out by the end of the book.
Will I continue to read this series? Hell. Yes. I need to know what happens next, I’m pretty sure my “Nooooo!” is still echoing off my ceiling.
This was such an interesting read! The whole contract and not being married idea was SO unique. It gave the the story all sorts of entertaining obstacles. Lyon's writing is witty and addictive, and I finished this in a matter of hours. I really wish I had the next book in the series in front of me, because no way was I ready for the story to end yet!
Oh man this book was just pure fun from start to finish. I enjoyed it though it was certainly not what I was expecting. From the sounds of the series name (Contract Killers), I thought for sure this would be about actual killers, but it joke is on me because the contract in this book refers to the legal kind. In Erin Lyon’s world, couples enter contracts instead of getting married which can be renewed every seven years or so. I loved the protagonist, Kate here. She has just completed a law degree, a little later in life, but is struggling with finding a job that she wants. When her partner unexpectedly decides to not renew their contract, her life is sort of thrown off the course. Kate and her friend were funny as heck and I enjoyed reading the book through her point of view. I will admit there were some situations when I didn’t approve of Kate’s decision, such as her constantly being seduced by her ex while she is obviously very much interested in “the contract killer”, a man who is notorious for getting involved with contracted women. The romance in this book is seriously messy. Kate has 3 contenders for her heart and they are all pretty great, but it’s also ridiculously obvious who she’s going to end up with. The thing is, I Love You Subject to the Following to the Following Terms is part of a series, and this book ends on a cliffhanger. I’m not sure why it’s one because this is easily a story that could have been wrapped up within one book had some of the unnecessary love complications been removed. But like I said, Erin Lyon’s writing is a whole lot of fun, so it was easy to breeze through the book. I will most likely pick up the next book in the series, but I sincerely hope there’s not going to be more books featuring Kate, because that would just be dragging the story.
