The Rainbow Fish books by Marcus Pfister are always wonderful. The illustrations are amazing. The message is always important. This book deals with playing fair and apologizing if you are wrong. Even Rainbow Fish learns he has to play fair and not always win. I love these books!
Great edition to the Rainbow fish series. My kids loved hearing the story and I like that it taught them a lesson. Great read and I hope to see even more books by this author.
Another great installment in the stories of Rainbow Fish. Not only do we learn a valuable lesson, we learn it as a child would through a simple game of hide and seek. Trying to find the fish in the pages is fun in itself but the story brings home the point that sometimes you aren't the best but having fun is always a good thing with friends. The illustrations are great as they always are in a Rainbow Fish book! Highly recommend for all ages!
I was given a copy of the book for an honest review by Netgalley and pubisher.
You can never go wrong with rainbow fish!
I requested this ARC specifically to read to my 2 year old.
He is a pout-pout fish fan, and I figured he may like rainbow fish too!
While it is difficult for him to understand the story, as it should be since it's meant for a bit older of an age group, he did enjoy the illustrations - and there was no shortage of him shouting "FISH!" every time I turned the page.
As an adult, I enjoyed the story and the lesson behind it - it shows kids that even if they lose while playing a game - it's still possible to be happy and congratulate the person that did. Say "NO!" to being a grumpy loser!
Another great Rainbow fish by Marcus Pfister! Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful moral to the story. This is a book I will definitely be using in storytime!
I liked the illustrations in this book, as it added an element of 'hide and seek' - the child can spot the fish hiding amongst the reef, which helps to keep their attention. I did feel that many of the paragraphs were too long, as often kids can be eager to turn the page to see the next picture. Also, there were some lengthier sentences and adjectives which may have been too much. On the whole though, the message is good, i.e. not to be a sore loser, and that it's okay to lose sometimes - a great message to send to children.
I like the Rainbow Fish books and this was a good read that could be used for many things in the classroom. I'm not sure it's quite on a par with the original.
This was a good continuation in the Rainbow Fish series with a clear moral to the story. I could see it being used for PSHE lessons for Nursery to Year 1.
Rainbow Fish is a favorite of my family's and this new story did not disappoint! The lovely signature watercolors of purple, blue and aqua contrasted with the bright orange, pink and raspberry of Rainbow Fish's new friend. With the aid of Red Fin, Rainbow Fish learns the valuable lesson of being a good looser as well as empathy for others.
You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish is a great book! I read it to my Year 2 class and every single one of them was engaged from the beginning to the end. The storyline is very revelant to all children. It brought up lovely discussions about what to do in the playground as we often have this situation arising!
It's well written and with beautiful illustrations. Definitely a book which will be purchased for the school's library!
Thanks to Netgalley and North South Books for the pleasure of reading this book prior to release!
This book has some lovely images that really help to illustrate the book. The morale to the story is very good, it teaches young children that everyone loses once in a while and whilst being a good sport when you lose isn’t always easy, its for the best and better things are often around the corner - 4 stars for this one.
I love that Rainbow Fish is still teaching children important life lessons and etiquette! I remember the original story being a favorite when I was a child, and I'm so excited that I can share this book with a new generation. I had forgotten about this little fish for a while, but there are so many new stories that I want to read and share with all the children in my personal and professional life. I highly recommend this series. Especially since almost all the books include iridescent scales throughout! So pretty :)
I loved this book. Already being a fan of Rainbow fish I was keen to see the new book. It is a very simple story that most children will be able to relate to. I love that it makes it clear that we can not always win. The apology is so important too. I will most definitely be buying this book for my child. This addition to Rainbow Fish continues to offer the beautifully bright coloured pictures and is the perfect gift for children.
My 7-yr old daughter and I read 'You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish' together and, according to her, this is a must read and she wants to tell her friends about it. She has loved reading the Rainbow Fish books and this one was no different. Rainbow Fish plays a game of hide and seek and Rainbow Fish does not do well during the game. The book works through different emotions with Rainbow Fish and friends. It was an easy read but my daughter enjoyed it, talked about the message of not always having to win or be perfect at everything, and was captivated by the pictures throughout the book.
Another great lesson by Rainbow Fish. We can't always win is a lesson every kid needs to learn. Welll written.
Rainbow Fish is confident in his abilities to win every game of Hide-and-Seek, but when he loses to a fish younger than himself, Rainbow Fish is upset and storms away, refusing to play with his friends anymore. It takes the gentle wisdom of Red Fish to convince Rainbow Fish to apologize for his poor sportsmanship and resume playing the game.
I loved the colorful illustrations, and the sparkly images of an underwater game of Hide-and-Seek! Rainbow Fish is a sweet character and all his little fishy friends are adorable. This book strongly reminded me of the simple excitement of a childhood game, and I could see my whole childhood wrapped up in this little story.
The moral is a little too obvious and preachy, but the cute illustrations make up for that. I would love to read more of the Rainbow Fish stories! This book would be perfect to read to a child who has a strong competitive nature.

This addition to the Rainbow Fish series highlights being a good sport.
This is a great book about learning how to lose. Losing and being a good sport about it, is one of the hardest things a child can learn but it is a crucial developmental skill.
The illustrations were beautiful and my 4 year old loved the rainbow. I liked how it was a simple game they were playing when the rainbow fish lost so that the target audience would be very familiar with and be able to apply what they learned easily to their own life.
I liked how this wasn't sugar coated. When the rainbow fish lost, someone called them out of in private and explained how his actions hurt someone else and then helped him figure out how to make things better so they could all play again.
I highly recommend this book. Great life lesson for children.

Rainbow Fish in playing hide and seek with his friends. He couldn't find anyone and gets frustrated. When it's his turn to hide he is found right away. He gets mad and doesn't want to play anymore. His friend Red Fish tells him that it's only a game and he can't win all the time. He goes back and apologizes for being a bad sport and they all go back to playing.
I always like books that teach children something. This book dealt with losing really well. Everyone wins and loses something and you have to be a good sport about it. Rainbow Fish learned that when he lost his friend won and he was very happy about it. I always enjoy the illustrations in Rainbow Fish books and this one did not disappoint. I recommend this book because it helps children deal with situations that arise in their life.
"Everyone loses once in a while. But being a good sport when you lose isn't always easy- not even for Rainbow Fish." Marcus Pfister
5/5 ⭐
You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish is a beautifully illustrated story with an important message for young children. Rainbow Fish and his new friend Red Fin play a lively game of hide and seek with other fish in the sea, but when other things aren't going his way, Rainbow Fish gets angry and swims away. It takes courage for Red Fin to stand up for Little Blue and tell Rainbow Fish he is being a poor sport. Little Blue was so happy to give Rainbow Fish another chance after his apology.
I read an e-book advanced reader copy as a courtesy from NetGalley, and I am eagerly awaiting publication for a paper copy for my classroom. The illustrations are beautiful, bright and colorful. The story is simply and engaging, and it reminds our youngest learners the importance of both being a good sport when you don't win AND to talk through conflicts with your friends. Children everywhere will benefit from the author's lesson to "accept loss without losing your sparkle!"
