I'd pick a Peter Tomasi-Patrick Gleason book off the stands over most all else any day of the week, and especially with Doug Mahnke along for the ride. In Superman Vol. 1: Son of Superman, The creative team does perfectly well by Clark, Lois, and son Jon, following up on the success of their "family" stories in Batman and Robin.
A solid trade that any fan of DC Comics can pick up and enjoy. Rebirth continues to be just that for DC and a breath of fresh air for the superhero genre.
The best rebirth story I've read yet. They've fixed everything they screwed up with the new 52 Superman and the whole depowered, wrestling Superman nonsense. Tomasi and Gleason are one of the best creative teams working at DC and it shows. I love the interactions between Clark, Lois, and their son Jon. My favorite parts are Clark showing Jon the ropes of what it means to be Superman. I hope they continue to focus on the family dynamic in this book. It's a great way of making it stand out from all the other Superman books.
ARC from Netgalley.
With the death of the New 52 version of Superman (see Last Days of Superman) and the pre-Flashpoint Superman coming to this place and time (see Superman: Lois and Clark), Supes is ready to fly high and protect the Earth. But he has an added task now: Superdad! Jon, son of Lois and Clark, is beginning to manifest powers and who better than Supes to teach him to control!
A new/old enemy emerges from the darkness and the combined might of Superman and Superboy have to take on the Eradicator, a being from Krypton who wants to absorb all Kryptonians to make himself more powerful. This Volume is full of huge battles (typical to Superman books) and the art is good. I'm interested to see how everything pans out with the Justice League now knowing of Jon's existence.
Haven't been much of a Superman reader in the past, but I'm really liking the new "family man" dynamic he's got going. Recommend, especially if you need to see Superman through a new light.
I saw last time I was at the comic store that DC was going to resurrect the whole "Super Sons" thing with Damian Wayne and Jon Kent. I rolled my eyes and scoffed, having read some reallyyyyy dated comic from decades ago where the two team up, speak in some horrible slang, fight crime together, and if I remember correctly, they eventually die?!! But this is so far the absolute best that I've read so far of the whole Rebirth thing. It seemed to invigorate the whole Superman mythos again, while sticking to loveable touchstones from comics of the recent past and the much longer ago past. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of the Batcave on the Moon, and Krypto coming into play. But my favorite thing ever was the last page, which just felt lifted straight from the bygone era of Superman (and the Justice League as well). I highly recommend it, even if Supes isn't your favorite hero -- God knows, he sure as Hell ain't mine but I definitely enjoyed it.
This Rebirth series brings a Superman from an alternate universe as well as his family. And while the Eradicator acknowledges Kal-El as Kryptonian, his son Jonathan is in danger from the machine as his blood isn’t “pure.” Meanwhile, Jonathan doesn’t quite have the same powers as Clark, and finds them hard to control at times.
This new series is fresh and is a new beginning of sorts for the Man of Steel. This story arc is exciting and fun, with great artwork. I love the focus on Jonathan, Lois and Clark’s son. He’s a brave boy who wants to make his own way in the world, but who’s still learning his powers. I’d definitely keep reading this series. The family dynamic adds a lot and is still action-packed.
Son of Superman collects issues #1-6 and the Superman: Rebirth one-shot.
I am so behind on my supermen reading that this was a little hard to follow. At first. Why are there so many supermen. A red one and a black one. Then when it switches over to the story of son of Supermen, which Superman is that? The stories around the son are interesting. The entire book just seems to be a way to launch a Superboy run.

One and a half stars for what is at times a shockingly bad book, with awful cartoonish art, unreadable layouts and action scenes, and nothing new. If you thought we'd get something new, monumental-seeming or different from the Rebirth trades, this and the Green Arrow ones have both proven otherwise. This take on Superman does what he's supposed to do here, but he's a distinctly unlikeable one, and the retread of the junior character finding his feet with his powers is clunking.
One of the major themes in this graphic novel is that of father and son. While the 52 Superman has been protecting the planet, the original has been living a quiet mid-western life with his wife Lois and son Jonathan. Now he comes out of retirement to put the cape on once again.
Superman is the father of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) waiting for Jonathan to come to him confessing his struggle with his developing powers. Especially after the unfortunate death of the family cat. These little details, both in story and art, make the scenes where the father-son pair fight The Eradicator even more epic.
90's era Superman is back, and sharing adventures with his wife and son. It was nice to see the Eradicator and other Kryptonian elements in this storyline. The artwork is fantastic and suitable to these tales. I'm looking forward to the future exploits of this super family. Highly recommended.
Great start for the Man Of Steel . Exciting , engaging story. Superman is written the way he should be. Superman is living a normal wife with his family until tge eradicator comes for the house of El. Beautiful artwork , Superman lovers will not be disappointed
Now THAT is Superman!! Woo!!!
It's not the same Superman that is from 'our' main DC universe, instead this TPB is about a Superman that, personally, I like even more. It's the Superman who was killed by Doomsday in the nineties, married Lois, etc.
They also now have a son named Jonathan. He is half human and half Kryptonian and those two sides aren't exactly playing well together.
Then the Eradicator appears (one of my favorite villains to hate) and he thoroughly complicates things for everyone including Jonathan.
As I said at the top, this was the Superman that I grew up with, this was the Superman that I remember, that made me fall so deeply in love with comics. (I only had a passing fancy before the Doomsday and Death and Life of Superman storylines). None of these amazingly powerful and weird powers, and especially no dating Wonder Woman (can all Supermen be done dating Wonder Woman forever??)
Now, I don't know how long I'll be able to enjoy this Superman (there were maybe some hints of future twists in this TPB?), but, I'm gonna relish every second of this title while this Superman exists!!
I was given this galley through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment.
Superman is dead, and not coming back. However, another Superman is on the scene, but this one has a son, Jonathan, with his wife Lois. They are from a different Earth who have been hiding outside Metropolis for a while. They have been hiding from the Eradicator who want to establish a "pure " House full El, so Jonathan must die! Plenty of fighting and Krypton history to entertain the reader.
