I didn't realize this was the final book in a series when I requested it. (So I had to check out the others.) This book has a lot packed into it and was a satisfying conclusion. If you love fantasy with action, romance, and high stakes then this trilogy is for you..
The Fallen Kingdom by Elizabeth May is honestly everything you could possibly want from a finale. What an amazing, heart-racing climax to the end! I love this trilogy, and highly recommend it to teens who love fantasy with action, romance, and high stakes.
LOVED this. ABSOLUTELY LOVED this. Elizabeth May is a highly underrated author in my opinion! This book literally has it all: history, romance, fairies, fae, steampunk, battles, and Scotland (which I adore). Please run to your nearest bookstore and pick up this delightful novel. You will not regret it, I promise!
One of the best YA fantasy conclusions. Despite being the final book in series, May pulls no punches but doesn't leave every question answered, either. Not every hurt is addressed or healed. It is appropriately grim and heavy. High stakes and high costs; brings the feels.
I absolutely was not planning on binge reading this series finale practically all in one night but once I started I simply couldn't stop! It was a roller coaster of emotions from beginning to end and MY POOR HEART.
Full of heart stopping twists, heart crushing emotional scenes and heart racing action, I ended up loving this. I'm so sad it's over because I want MORE.
I was given this book by NetGalley years ago and then I lost that copy and ended up buying one when I saw it was only $.99 on Kindle. I just wanted to be transparent with you.
Now, let me start off by saying... what in the world was I thinking?! I waited far too long before finishing this series. I originally stopped because there wasn't enough romance but I read some reviews when cleaning up my NetGalley that said the romance really increased throughout the series and it did!
The writing is great. The world is super cool! I mean, steampunk!!!! We don't get a lot of that. At least I don't find a lot of it and when I do it's usually stuff that just doesn't appeal to me. This is a little hidden gem that more people need to find and read because it's so good! The MC is kickass! A girl you can root for. I mean, what more could one want?
Will go live on blog: 10/12/2019
This was a wonderful heart wrenching ending to this story. The action was ramped up to a great degree that you keep wanting to turn the pages dying to know how it going to end. The second book seemed to drag so i was not as enthusiastic to pick the third book up. I am glad that i did as i like to see how authors choose to wrap stories up. I am sad that a main character i dearly loved was killed off i almost threw my book/kindle across the room. I not a fan of certain death sciences they have a place it always so heart wrenching and it just a character in a book. All in all this was an amazing series.
I think The Fallen Kingdom was the ending this series deserved. While not as action-packed as the previous book in the series, I felt like the stakes were higher which helped build tension throughout the book. I think this caused certain scenes to be more rushed rather than drawn out for effect.
I still love the characters and have stuck by them since the first book. And I'm really happy with how this book ended. It was satisfying and I didn't feel like the author was trying to leave loose ends for a potential spin-off down the road (which I'm not a fan of unless the spin-off is already guaranteed).
Although I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the second one, it was a solid installment and finale for the series.
This series is so amazing, and the final book is no different! I'm so sad to see these characters go, but I'm honestly not sure my heart can take much more of Kam and Kiaran, and all the death and destruction that follows them. I mean, I would NOT complain about an epilogue that I won't divulge the details of, but I'll remember these characters and their story for a very long time. If you're reading this review and haven't started this series, let me reassure you: it's more than worth the heartache.
A satisfying end to the trilogy. Again I have to say that Elizabeth May has created some great characters and dynamics to explore between them. Nonstop action and anticipation had me burning through the pages, and my heart broke several times. Could have done without Sorcha and Aithinne's constant snarky banter in serious situations, as I thought it unrealistic and distracting, but overall I'm pleased with how it ended. Though Ms. May did leave it till the very last minute--had me worried there! If you're a fan of kick-ass girls, brooding heroes, and evil faeries, this series is for you.
Aileana, Kiaran, and Aithinne are back in this trilogy. The plot is wonderful and full of emotions. If you love Fae stories, this book is for you!
This was a wonderful conclusion to an amazing story. This book was not disappointing at all. There were some beautiful moments between the Falconer and her trainer. Some really sad moments for her friends. And some touching moments between enemies. I couldn’t stop reading, I didn’t want to stop reading. I’m just sorry it took a bit to get to.
I enjoyed this, but sadly it wasn't as good as the second and first one. I felt like this didn't have as much action involved in it. I think it was trying to be ended on a concluding note, like the author was trying to make sure all the loose ends I her novel were tied up. I appreciated her effort because I do like when the novels end with the loose ends and such but this one felt rushed. But I did think it was enjoyable and I did like how the series ended overall, even though something happened to make me sad....still hurt by that....ugh!
This series is among my all time favorites I've read and I love the way May wrapped up this story.
I can't wait to read more from her ... hopefully very soon! (I would love to have the final two books on audio! Just throwing that out there!)
Thanks for letting me read it early!
SPOILER ALERT for the first two books of the series! You have been warned...
The Fallen Kingdom picks back up exactly where The Vanishing Throne left off – at least in Aileana’s mind. In reality quite a bit has happened and I was super confused for a few chapters. This would be a negative EXCEPT Aileana is just as confused as the hapless reader and so it’s perfect. She slowly pieces together what happened to her and everyone else and while she’s just as much a badass as ever (and still feels the need to remind us of that now and again), she is not as in control as she seemed before, despite having all the unnatural powers of the fae. Aileana is human, and humans imbued with fae powers…well, it’s not working out so well for her.
Kiaran…um. Well. Kiaran is just as dark and broody as ever. His day/night personality was more in evidence here, and it was more disconcerting than ever before. However…he still wasn’t as dark as I was expecting. Good thing…I guess? He’s the Unseelie King, he’s supposed to be evil and dark and twisted…and he was, but we don’t really see that directly. Also when Kam actually gets to him it was a little anticlimactic because he really didn’t seem all that different. The end though…be. still. my. bleeding. heart.
Aithinne as queen of the Seelie fae is just as amazing, hysterical, and badass as ever. I still adore her. I still want her to be my best friend.
She still has the best lines in the book but I unfortunately can’t quote any of them because my ePub file expired and my copy of the book hasn’t arrived yet. Bad book blogger.
I LOVED the way the legend of the Morrigan and her sister was woven into the story. I definitely need to brush up on my Scottish mythology/folklore, because I’m fairly certain I was missing some subtle nuances but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
As you can see, I had a few issues with the story, as characters weren’t quite what I expected or weren’t as developed as I hoped…but Elizabeth May managed to write such an amazing story with characters I was SO committed to, and also to not make it a happily-ever-after fairy tale. It has aspects of it, but…it’s not entirely, and that was part of what made me rate it 5 stars.
I can’t wait to see what Ms. May writes next! She’s definitely on my auto-buy list. Personally, I would love to see a book (or two or three) with Aithinne as the main character. Hint, hint, Ms. May. ;)
Many thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the review copy in exchange for an honest review!
I apologize for the delayed response on this title. I had problems with the download. I only just recently reread the first book, and purchased book 3.
The Fallen Kingdom was the perfect ending to this series. I couldn't ask for a better third book to close all the chapters, answer all the questions, and give happy endings to these characters that I've known to love.
It was really beneficial that I read all three books in a row. With the ending of book 2, I was extremely grateful to have a third book to start right away. From the beginning of The Fallen Kingdom, it was filled with emotions and May did not pull any punches. I read every page as if it was the last breath I would have taken. I didn't understand while I was reading the beginning, how much of an impact every scene would play and add to the end.
To be fair, there was a few moments that the momentum slowed down. It took a bit of extra push to get it going again, but I was satisfied with the ending.
I loved this book and I loved this series. If you have not yet picked these books up, you are missing out. This is the final book in the series so I was really excited when I received the approval! These characters go through so much growth and change across all of the books and I admit that going into this one, I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Overall, I was super happy with the way things were resolved and I can't wait to see what May writes next!
Though I’d been planning to read The Fallen Kingdom pre-publication, I ended up taking a break of several months after The Vanishing Throne. That book was too sad and angry, and, especially in 2017, I couldn’t take any more of that right away. Frankly, I was afraid that I wouldn’t like The Fallen Kingdom, but thankfully the pacing and tone returns to that of the first book, and I absolutely could not put this book down.
Much as I admire the fact that May was able to make the reader feel just a bit of what it’s like to experience severe depression and PTSD, that experience took a serious toll on me, and more of a toll on Aileana. I mean, Aileana did actually die at the end of the book. But, like Buffy, that doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t be back.
Aileana comes to in a forest and has to claw her way out of the dirt. She has no idea who the fuck she is or why she’s there or why, apparently, she can destroy forests. This is one of the only times I actually really love amnesia as a plot device. First off, it was nice because it allowed May to recap the reader on things that might have been forgotten since book two. Second, the amnesia doesn’t make anything easier at all. While Aileana’s mind seems to have done this to cope with the pain, the things she does in this state make her even less sure of who she is.
Though the plot is basically constant action and terrible stuff happening to our heroes, May does a nice job bringing back the humor from book one. The Fallen Kingdom is both funny and intense by turns. Sure, it undercuts some of the tension, but it also sets this series apart from a lot of other fantasies, which often don’t have a great sense of humor. It’s emotionally satisfying to see these characters gaining some lightness back even in bleak circumstances. The world may be fucked, but Aileana’s working out her mental health, and that makes me happy.
Kiaran and Aileana aren’t my favorite ship in the world, but I’m relatively happy with how things play out. I like that May didn’t take the easy route and that their reconciliation doesn’t go precisely as one might have thought. I also like that Kiaran has to struggle the whole time. Still, if Aithinne had been the ship instead of Kiaran, it would have been that f/f OTP I’ve been dreaming of, so it’s hard not to be just a little bit salty. And, neat as it is, I highly doubt View Spoiler »
On the whole, I’m very happy with this series, and I’m glad it’s part of my collection. May’s debut trilogy shows so much talent, and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next.
Thank you for the chance to review this book, however, unfortunately, I was unable to read and review this title before it was archived.
Honestly? I was a little disappointed by this one. It started out really well, lots of action and questions I wanted answers to, and then it totally and completely stalled out. I don't really know what happened but it took me forever to read this one. And I'm so sad that I didn't just love it. But it just felt a little repetitive and slow and lots of conversations about what had happened in the past to get us caught up to the problems now and then so many just ridiculous twists and turns near the end when I just wanted to finally be done. I really hated feeling so much of that, especially because so many of the important moments felt so well written and engaging. But with the pacing so up and down, I really had a hard time just getting through it. Plus, so many of my favorite characters just weren't in this one very much and the steampunk elements were in this one even less than the last one. And since that was one of my favorite parts of the first one, its complete lack in this one hurt a little bit. I know a lot of people love these and they seem like the perfect type of series to just completely binge and get lost in, so don't just listen to my feelings on it. Definitely check out other reviews of the series because I kind of wonder if it's just my mood that made it hard for me to really get into this finale or if it was just a little wandering and repetitive and lacking something special. I don't know. I think you'll need to decide for yourself if it seems like books for you.
