The JOHNSON ROAD SAGA is a fascinating read. The first book focuses on the disappearance of a beloved 8-year-old girl.. The story begins with how the neighborhood she lives in (along Johnson Road) came into existence and follows the families that live along the road. We hear the story from several different points of view: Robert Stallwell, the detective from the State Police and his nemesis, Clifford Gaskin, the Sheriff of Peterson county. WE also hear portions of the story from Purvis Johnson, after whom the road was named, and several others. In some ways, the tone of the story reminded my of a really creepy version of Thorton Wilder's OUR TOWN. At the conclusion of the first book, we learn what happened to the charming child and the second book focuses on who was responsible for her disappearance and why. Some of the same events detailed in the first book are retold, but from a different point of view, casting a deeply sinister hue on the story. the JOHNSON ROAD SAGE introduces us to one of the most diabolical criminals ever found in the genre. These books really pulled me in with the great characterization and intriguing story. Very hard to put down.
I enjoyed book two much more than book 0ne in this saga. Book two is told from the killer's point of view. Very original writing and not your typical crime story at all. I would recommend these two books. I reviewed on Amazon and Goodreads.
First let me say, this is a disturbing story that is bordering on insane! If you like a creepy tale that may keep you up at night AND will definitely make you look twice at your neighbors - this book is for you!
The story is well written with a tremendous amount of detail given for both the characters and the
scenery. At times, I felt that the story lagged due to the drawn out details. But this only happens in Book 1 and looking back, it was needed. Overall, this is a good read and I would recommend it.
Johnson Road (Book 1 of the Johnson Road Saga) is mainly from the perspective of the town and ends with the discovery of a body. Peterson County Murders (Book 2 of the Johnson Road Saga) begins with the last chapter of Book 1 and while it goes forward from that point; it also retells the story from the killer's perspective.
Both books are very disturbing, but the tale captures you and like any tragedy that we come upon where can't seem to look away from, you aren't able to stop reading regardless of how appalled by the actions of the residents of Johnson Road!
