Not for me. I didn't realise that this was the third book in a series but it explains why I felt a bit out of step with the goings on and couldn't get into the storyline. I didn't feel engaged enough to go back and read the first two books.
Quinn reveals just enough to tantalise us with the prospect of further adventures. Nailbiting to the end!
Great historical mystery. Quinn really nails the history and throws in an excellent mystery as well. Will read more of these. You should too.
An enjoyable read, as good as the previous two in the series, looking forward to the next instalment. I love the chemistry that is developing between Lily and Charlie, think they work great together.
I have decided that i will not be publishing a review for this book after reading it since i did not get along with this book. but since i felt like it was mostly for my own personal reasons why i didn't enjoy the book it wouldn't be fair towards the author and the book itself if i would publicise a negative review simply because this book didn't fit into my personal reading preferences.
thank you for the opportunity to read this book even if it did not work out as we all had hoped.
I have read the first two books (Fire Catcher and The Thief Taker), which I enjoyed. For some unknown reason, I found myself struggling with this book. After several stops and starts, I have finally finished.
My review can be found on Amazon and Goodreads.
It may have been better if I'd started with the first book in the series (instead of the third) but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book. I'm using to reading modern thrillers, but I do like history, so this book was ideal - and different. I liked the style of writing and found myself warming to Charlie, the main character. The author brings 17th Century London to life and you can visualise it from the descriptions. I'm going to read the others in the series now!
A very interesting niche for a mystery novel! If there's another series out there set in 1666 London, it's going to have a rough time competing against this well configured and entertaining book. Charlie and Lily really are a dynamic duo in the nightmare of a devastated London. They were completely believable and likeable characters for me, even in these strange circumstances. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC- this can be read as a standalone but I know I'm interested in reading more from Quinn.
I've read all of C.S. Quinn's books about the charismatic and elusive Charlie Tuesday and I can honestly say, that the author never failed to draw you into yet another mystery plaguing the inhabitants of London. I was incredibly surprised by the massive plot twist and the way it affected each of the characters in turn. I cannot wait to see if Quinn decides to follow on. If not, I anticipate her next novel like a small child waiting for Christmas.
Though I wish I'd read the previous books in the series before reading this one, I still found it very engaging and a gripping read. Charlie is an intriguing, well-developed character, and I think I will go back and read the prior books in the series, just to get more of this character. Looking forward to further books by this author!
