This looked so interesting in the description, but I'm afraid it fell flat for me.
Sorry for the delayed review. I have been working this year to catch up on my netgalley backlog. I appreciate the opportunity to read this story.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review - for a full review check out my YouTube or Goodreads account
I don't understand what I just read? This book sounds like a child wrote it and not in a good way. I got whiplash from the random jumps of setting, which said a lot, but also nothing at the same time. Fate's idea of being unlucky is wow, each adventure she went through was the same.
Sure she went into different stories, but the journey was the same with each one and I have yet to understand why she was okay with this dude burning books in her store, like huh.
This book just confused me.
A young author finds herself in an adventure where she must ‘fix’ different fairy tales to escape. Great concept but the execution didn’t hold up. Pacing was a bit dodgy as there were only mere moments spent in one tale while months in others. And that use of a magical notebook that seemly had limited pages but the characters kept wasting them on things that they didn’t need and its limitation is not brought up again. 2/5
It was interesting but it didn't really catch my attention enough for me to finish the entire book. I think Fate is just not the right kind of gal for me.
Magical and creative, Fate's Fables starts slow then beings to pick up momentum as a young author from our normal world is thrown into a world of fairytales and fables. Sucked into a cursed magical book, Fate and a strange man sucked in with her is confronted with 8 fables that they must give happily ever afters to, as to escape the book and return home. They seem tame enough at first, but as they goes through, things get darker and harder to make into happily ever afters. As the stakes raise, they grow closer together and secrets that could tear them apart come into the light. There very survival is put at risk by magical witches, trolls, dragons, children killers, dark evil fae and angry villagers out for blood.
I actually quite enjoyed Fate's Fables. I started off skeptical, mainly because the beginning of the novel was slow and pretty normal, but then the characters got launched off into a crazy rollercoaster ride of magic with consequences and actual dangers and I was hooked in. I often find that magic and magical stories are fluffed up in stories and movies, but not in Fate's Fables. In this novel magic has consequences, decisions have consequences and that really gives a realistic feel to the novel. I liked Fate herself, but I loved her companions throughout the novel, they are what make Fate's story and interesting one. Fate was a dynamic character that had interesting and unique traits, for example, she fears worms, but not snakes. For most people, that would be the exact opposite. Story execution wise, this novel did a wonderful job. Each fable was well written, so much so that I felt like they could be real fables. I was quite impressed. All in all, I enjoyed Fate's Fables and I give it the rating of FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!!!
4☆ Enchanting Read.... Can the past really be re- written!
Fate is the main character and when she gets taken in by a magic book containing 8 Fables, she embarks on a journey to try and change the outcome of the stories, in order to make it back home.
By entering the Magic Book, things are about to change.
Can Fate really change the path of the Fables or is she doomed to stay within the book forever.
It's not going to be easy so when she meets the mysterious Finn he sets out to help Fate discover how to get home and how to change what's allready been written.
She doesn't refuse he's help, she needs all the help to figure out the mystery.
Their alliance soon turns to friendship which you guessed it turns to....!!!
The magical side to the book is enchanting all the delightful characters you meet along the way is exciting. Such as Fae, Goblins etc...
The fables have everything included to make a good story, a villain, romance, etc... they are just missing the ever important Happy Ending.
The book is rather long and does take a a fair amouny of time to become exciting.
But don't give up it does get better!
Overall an enchanting, magical read.
I would recommend this book to readers who love Fantasy, adventures, General Fiction.
Tell me if such a premise I could have resisted in not requesting it on NetGalley.
Fate is a girl who loves to write and is very fanciful. One day, going to the library inherited by her deceased grandmother, she finds a boy named Finn and together they will be catapulted into a book where their purpose will be to turn tragedies into a happy ending.
This thing of being catapulted into a book made me remember the movie "Pagemaster" and I felt a huge nostalgia. In the end, it would be the dream of several readers to enter the world within a book, perhaps without too dangerous adventures :P
I had not read anything of Mitchell before that and I have to say she has a style I like. Very intriguing and full of descriptions. The protagonist, Fate, is a pretty character, a heroine of all respect, but that in some aspect did not convince me as her immediate trust for the boy (which, though cute, I would not give immediate confidence to a stranger).
As for Finn, I tell you that he's already finished with the most loyal and loving book boyfriends of this year. He and Fate are a gorgeous couple, two half completing, which made me sigh with a dreamy expression. And yes, I always feel a pinch of envy for these so tight pairs, I admit it.
Beautiful illustrations at the beginning of each fairy tale and I found it very useful that the author has always specified what story it was because, sadly, I must admit I do not know some of them.
The cliffhanger has a bit bothered me (I hate them!) But I'm glad to know that there is already the sequel. I can't wait to find out what will happen. This story is like a drug.
Fate’s Fables by T. Rae Mitchell is an entertaining and adventure riddled fantasy tale that is brimming with magical creatures, powerful individuals and mysterious discoveries.
Fate Floyd has always enjoyed fantasy over reality, but her love of all things fictional is put to the test when Fate finds herself sucked into a book of unfortunate fairy tales alongside a mysterious young man names Finn who is eerily familiar and the only way for them to escape the Book of Fables is for Fate and Finn to change the endings of each of the eight tales into happily-ever-afters. Each tale is more dangerous than the next and with plenty of unexpected forces determined to keep Fate and Finn from altering the tales, Fate and Finn will find themselves on a life changing journey where happiness is far from guaranteed….
T. Rae Mitchell has created a fun and adventure filled fantasy tale with Fates Fables, kicking off the Fate’s Journey series. Unfolding mainly through Fate and Finn’s POV, with an occasional different character thrown into the mix, Fate’s Fables takes you into the heart of eight very different fairy-tales, all sporting the trademark traits that make fairy-tales what they are; good versus evil, romance, monsters, magic and of course good triumphing over evil in the end.
Fate’s Fables focuses on a decent bunch of characters. Fate and Finn were easy to follow and Sithias made me smile on more than one occasion. That snakeman was certainly unique and although he had his own form of a happily ever after in Fate’s Fables, I would love to see him again down the track as his personality really shone as a highlight in the story for me.
I have to say I was surprised by the level of growth the main two characters undertake in Fate’s Fables. Fate and Finn become almost completely different people throughout the story; most especially Fate, who goes from normal teenage girl to a sword wielding, battle capable warrior from what seems like one moment to the next. Don’t get me wrong; I understand these developments within the story and seeing as large levels of time often pass throughout the novel (weeks, sometimes months are jumped) it makes sense that Fate would be drastically altered, but I still couldn’t help but feel it was a lot of change for one novel. It was the kind of growth I’d expected over the course of a series, not just the first book. That being said, Fate and Finn both go through a lot so it’s understandable they would develop because of this.
Overall Fate’s Fables was an entertaining read, perfect for anyone who loves fairy-tales and wants to jump straight into the story. I look forward to seeing what T. Rae Mitchell has in store for Fate and Finn in the next instalment!
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Original Mix Media for the opportunity to read and review Fate's Fables: One Girl's Journey Through 8 Unfortunate Fairy Tales! Fate's Fables, Book 1 of two books compiling Fate's Journey, pulled me right in while reading the synopsis and I couldn't wait to start reading this book. Chapter one starts off with Fate, a teenager, at the Seattle Public Library on the last stop of her very own book tour! Her fans are lined up for book signings and some of them are dressed up and playing the parts of her book characters. She leaves her book signing and takes a cab to her grandmother's deserted bookstore, Fables Bookstore. She finds the place run down and also finds a stranger there. The stranger's name is Finn. The two of them get pulled into the giant book of fables and Bruna Inkwell tells Fate that she must rewrite eight stories and give them each a happy ending to escape the book's hold. Fate is funny and Finn is brave and familiar to Fate. I like their relationship with its ups and downs and Sithias, the snake like creature that travels with them, adds wonderful humor also. The first story takes place on an island under the control of a goddess ; next deals with a dark faerie in a forest; third , a goblin queen; fourth, a troll with a heartbreaking story; fifth, a dragon empress; sixth, Mother Grim; seventh, a lightning sword; the eighth and last fable is about the bloodthirsty oak. Each fable is a complete story all on its own and Fate and her companions add another dimension to each fable by trying to overcome each fable's tragedy. The story is complex and interesting with characters that are dynamic, dimensional and lovable. I love it and am excited to read the sequel, Fate's Keep. There's also a prequel, Chaos in the Keep, that is included in the paperback edition of Fate's Fables and I plan on purchasing this book for my library patrons as well as for my personal library. I think readers that love magic and adventure will enjoy this fun fantasy, 5 stars.
A great storyline and imagination with a memorable set of characters. A refreshing novel that I couldn’t put down!
Fate Floyd truly believes that the world of books is way better and far more adventurous than hers. Driven by her passion for the fantasy genre, Fate is tricked and sent into a world where not all fairy tales have a happy-ending. Trapped in the Book of Fables, she most find a way to return home in one peace. How to do that? Turn the unfortunate endings to happily-ever-after. How hard can it be? Changing one’s fate never easy but if you include sorceresses, not very nice fairies and a mysterious male companion, things tend to get a bit more complicated.
Having read Chris Colfer’s Land of Stories I was a bit worried that the story would turn out to be in the same line. I was pleasantly surprised and I loved every minute of this incredible story.
I loved the reality that this takes place, or, more correctly, realities. Travelling through fairytales is probably what little children want to do, and this story-line just proves that not all fairytales are for children, they also exist to send messages to adults. This world proved to be full of colour even in its most dramatic parts. It’s action-packed and in some occasions fast paced but not always. The story builds up slowly, it’s not rushed. The writing style really helped me get through the big descriptions and more steal moments, it’s absolutely amazing!
Fate is a great main character; she’s a badass writer with a huge imagination and energy that it’s contagious. She is the link between the secondary characters and they all come together very nicely. The good thing is, not only I was able to follow the characters throughout the story, but I also enjoyed reading how they had to work and go around solving problems and rescuing friends in danger, even if in middle it got predictable. Finn, the male lead, didn’t do much for me. I would have appreciated a bit more background story and to see a build-up in his relationship with Fate. For me it happened too fast: she knows him, trusts him even though he burns books (oh the horror!).
This is a novel I recommend for all ages and specially for those that like to read something a little bit more on the steady-paced side.
Unfortunately I just couldn't get into this book. I tried so very hard, but I couldn't connect with Fate, the romance wasn't easy for me to accept, and the fables just...didn't do it for me. The concept was very cool and I could definitely see where others would like it, but sadly, Fate's Fables was just not for me.
This book was fun and fast! Loved it! Action out the wazoo! This will be one I will read again and again
This story was so unique, I love that the location was constantly changing, and the characters were great. I love this world and the concept that surrounds it, I hope that there will be more books.
This book was really fun to read about. I went into this book without knowing anything and I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did but I'm glad chose to read this book.
Fate is a fantasy geek and a writer but what she didn't expect her worlds to merge. When one incident leads to another, Fate finds herself trapped in the "Book of Fables" where she is ordered to bring back something precious and the only way she can get back to her world is to alternate all endings of the 8 stories into a happy one. Can Fate change all the fates of the story without losing herself?
The plot of this book was unique and refreshing. I really enjoyed the adventure through all the 8 fables that Fate had to cross in order to return home. All the stories were pretty different and I really liked the concept. What wasn't there in this story, goblins, faeries, trolls and so much more, the most important being Finn. I can't divulge the truth about him because that would be a major spoiler but damn I loved him so much!
I loved the romance between Fate and Finn. It really broke my heart when something happens in the middle of the book but nonetheless I enjoyed their chemistry. I loved the reference to all the fandom which proved how much of a geek Fate was, it was awesome!
The character development in this book is amazing. Fate develops so much throughout this book. All the characters were pretty interesting to read about but my favourite is none other than Sithias. Yes, a winged snake is my favourite character in this book! The twist with Gerdie was unexpected. There were so many elements in this book which constantly surprised me but I didn't even think that could happen in the end. I really want to know what happens after this!
Overall, Fate's Fables was quite an interesting read. I enjoyed the plot and the characters continued to surprise me. It was packed with action and adventure and it managed to hold my attention throughout the book. The writing was smooth and easy to read and the pace was even through out the book. I hope the next book is out soon so that I can finally know what Fate faces next!
Recommend it?
Yes!
I loved the imagery and thought provoking story lines in this Fantasy. Mitchell seems to have channeled her inner Tolkien in order to create this story. It’s reminiscent of the fun Harry Potter brought to our world, a kind of more grown up version of what Chris Colfer has been doing with his Land of Stories series. It starts off a bit rough but it’s worth it to hang in there for the ride especially for adults who were looking for a much longer book than what we’re used to seeing in the YA world. As a woman I appreciate when you can find a book with a good female protagonist and this definitely has it. The main character, Fate, journeys through the lives of people in eight worlds where she must examine her previous ideals, morals and assumptions in order to leave a more positive legacy on those she interacts with. Her cliffhanger will have you begging for more so thankfully a sequel is coming soon.
This is the first in a trilogy with the second coming sometime in 2017 which I found out after checking the author's website. After reading such an interesting book I needed to know more so I would highly recommend going to her site and signing up to keep informed when more books will be published.
This book gets five stars from me. One of my favorite younger series is "The Land of Stories" and this was like an older more mature version of that, with many differences to make it wholly unique. I loved the fairy tale aspect, the kick-butt heroine, the romance. Everything was A++++. I kept turning the pages and finished this in two days which is good for me!
