While I've enjoyed the writing and the concept of this story, I can't connect with any of the characters, and I find the slow pace to not be something I enjoy. I hope that in the future I will revisit the story and enjoy it more.

*** I would like to thank Netgalley, Serial Box Publishing and the author Carrie Harris for sending me this digital copy of Modern History in exchange for an honest review***

Cole used to live in a farm, he was a hard worker. He talks about his son and girlfriend, you can tell that he really loves them. I'm liking Cole he seems cool, responsible for his age. At the moment he's still hurt from the accident with the Caretakers. He feels useless and wants to help the group out.

Without telling the others Cole and Nevaeh go check out the city, and find a building that contains images, holograms and more Caretakers. They kind of start to figure out what that place is and what could've happened to the city and the earth. We're finally getting answers. :) But I do feel bad for Cole, he misses his son and girlfriend and he's kind of giving up :(

Cole's story was touching, you feel for the guy. But I am glad that we are finally getting a picture of what this place is. Everything was a mystery at first, I like getting clues of what's going on. I think there's still a lot that we don't know. I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

It was enjoyable but I found myself not really focusing on the story.

We. Have. ANSWERS.

Okay, not really. Some, but not really enough to count, I suppose. Y'all know this has been a HUGE frustration I've had with this series. Modern History picks up with Cole who's kind of been in the background and now it's time to hear his backstory (which, by the way, is so heartbreaking).

But here's my issue with that: we're still learning character histories.

It's the twelfth episode of fifteen for the season. And instead of moving the story ahead, we're getting backstories. Granted, during the course of this episode, Cole and Nevaeh go off exploring and find a museum that seems to detail some of the history between their deaths and the period of time leading to the present.

I won't spoil where they find out they are but I will say that I sort of expected it. Though the authors have worked to potentially misdirect readers from thinking it's THIS PLACE, it comes out more in these later episodes.

Now I didn't like this episode as much as the last, but I liked Cole more than most of the other characters. He's not like them and it made this episode seem a little... off, compared to the others. Not in a bad way, just different.

But we're three episodes from the end and I can't help but wonder if we'll ever learn why these teens in particular were chosen to come back from the dead, and so far in the future as well. I have a bad feeling that last episode is going to end on a cliffhanger to encourage readers to check out the next season but I'm not sure if I can sit through another season where my questions are never answered...

This episode focuses on Cole.
I've been wondering about his story for a while and his episode finally came.
I love Cole. He's the most mature of them. His story is heartbreaking and it made me like him even more.
Each episode, the teenagers discover something new. I really want to see what happens next and what will the teens do with their new information.

Cole is what you’d call a “salt of the earth” type. He works hard, loves his girl, and feels best when he’s being useful – which makes being injured particularly frustrating. When the others go off exploring and leave him behind again, he’s finally had enough. With Naveah as his accomplice he sets off to find answers of his own, and ends up learning more than he wanted.

This episode broke my heart. Earlier in the series we got a glimpse of what Cole lost by dying, but this episode is all about Cole. And we get to really see the pain that he’s been carrying around with him. No one in the group has really respected Cole the way he deserves, being that he got injured so early on and has been struggling with his recovery. He understands the need for the group to leave him behind, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Especially for someone that had to take care of so much in life, and work so hard, to then feel so helpless in his ReMade life. By the end of this episode you wonder if Cole wished he could go back to just feeling useless, rather than being faced with the harsh reality of truth.

Book 12: Modern History
Star rating - ★★★★☆
POV – Cole
Would I read it again – Yes

** COPY RECEIVED THROUGH NETGALLEY **

FINALLY! After all of this time, we finally get some answers.

Cole isn't a character we know well, thanks to other (less deserving) POV's taking over the bulk of the storytelling, but it was great to finally learn a little bit more about the Father-figure of the group. His story and the way he learned more about it at the museum they found was so heartbreaking.

However, yet again we're given more questions than answers and, honestly, this felt like the shortest episode so far. Not much happened except Cole's exploration to the museum and although it offered a hint of an explanation of what is to come, it didn't tell me nearly enough of what I wanted to know.
