Again, another story that wasn't for me. I think it was the author's writing style that didn't work out for me in this case.
Though I liked the book, I made the decision at the time I finished not to review it on my site. Maybe in the future I will include it in a book list post or another article.
Finding adult contemporary romances that work for me has been a bit of a struggle. I’m more into the rom-com kind than the more traditional kind, and those are a bit hard to find since the crash of “chick lit” and Red Dress Ink. Ever since The Hating Game, though, I’ve has a desperate need for more truly exceptional contemporary romance. Public Relations was exactly what I needed, a fun romantic comedy that adds some depth to the traditional celebrity romance trope.
Now I love the hell out of the celebrity romance trope. And the royal romance trope. They’re not believable generally, but they’re so much fun, and there’s nothing wrong with escapism. Public Relations stands out for actually not requiring that much suspension of disbelief. Rose works as a junior publicist for a legit firm, and she’s on the fast track in the career. It’s actually totally reasonable for her to meet and spend time with a celebrity.
There’s a lot that I really love about Rose’s career. For one thing, there’s a real focus on her job. It may not be majorly detailed, but there’s a constant drumbeat focus on the fact that Rose works, and she works hard. She’s always on Twitter, keeping an eye on her clients, and she exhibits several clever strategies for turning her client’s reputation around.
Not only that but Rose is super passionate about her career. Although she initially wanted to be a music journalist (I also love that this book shows that sometimes dreams aren’t actually achievable even if you work hard because honestly that’s the truth), but she discovered public relations and realized that she loved that too. It allows her to work closely with musicians and gives her power to influence taste. There’s a scene I love where she defends her career working in pop culture to a rich, straight white man who thinks it’s silly and unnecessary, and girl PREACH.
Rose mostly lucks but somewhat talents her way into managing Archie Fox for her PR firm. (I say luck only because she wasn’t supposed to be at the meeting that day, and she’s lucky that his agent took a chance on a newbie, not because she didn’t deserve it.) The two quickly become friends, and over times she starts feeling inconvenient feelings. Obviously, we all know where this is going, but the way it plays out is really nice and cute and slow burn-y.
Also, I actually really love that Rose initially parlays her sexual tension into a renewed interest in Tinder. She even goes on a few dates with a guy who is both hot and pretty nice. That’s something that’s also great: Neil isn’t a bad guy, and he’s not a second love interest or a real jealousy plot point. It feels like he’s in the story because that’s what a woman’s life is like in her mid-twenties, more than to accomplish a narrative goal. His character doesn’t get assassinated in any way, and he’s a fairly likable, albeit weird, guy.
Pretty much the only flaw of Public Relations from my perspective is that there isn’t quite enough of it. I wanted a bit more of Archie and Rose together. I think maybe they needed a bit more bliss before the inevitable discovery and a bit more before the book ended. I always like just a bit of time to see the couple really being together to see how well they work in actuality. I mean, I absolutely ship it, but I feel like it could have had just a bit more oomph.
I loved this book. Once I started, I only put it down to sleep, and that grudgingly. If you enjoy celebrity romances or contemporaries with a bit of a broader focus than just the romance itself, I highly recommend Public Relations.
Really nice new adult novel that hinges a bit on the romancey sector. I enjoyed reading it and I hope to see more from Heaney and Rebolini.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this title. Unfortunately in this instance,I didn't connect to the story. As I didn't finish reading, I will not be reviewing this title. Many thanks and I do look forward to picking up another read from this author.
I'm unable to provide a review at this time. Unfortunately, I DNFed this book in the first 17%. It just didn't grab my attention. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Such a great story,it was cute, hilarious at some parts and so enjoyable.I haven't read these authors before but I want to see more from them together. Both characters were lovable.
I adored this book! I absolutely love this type of story, and it did not disappoint me in the slightest. I mean, who doesn't want to fall for a swoony musician?
Junior Publicist Rose knows a lot about music and publicity but almost nothing about relationships. It's a surprise to her (and her team) when she gets chosen as a the lead publicist for superstar singer Archie Fox's rebranding campaign. A rebranding campaign that has everything to do with setting him up with cool, chic indie singer Raya and nothing to do with falling for his British popstar charm.
don't know if it's because I'm a publicist or because I just needed a fun quick read, but I couldn't put this book down. I loved that we got a glimpse inside the lifestyle of both the superstar singer and his publicity team. I found it fascinating (but this also could be because I'm a publicist, myself). I loved that this book was a tad bit predictable--there's nothing wrong with a super sweet, fast read where everything turns out the way you want it to be. Fun, original and page-turning, this is the type of book that you pack in your weekend bag and read under the umbrella at the beach, regretting nothing and sighing happily when it's over.
Quick cheesy fun read. Rose Reed is a music-lover working in PR. When her boss needs her to fill-in for her at an upcoming meeting with pop superstar Archie Fox, she is given the directive to stay quiet. As the meeting becomes disastrous, however, Rose steps in and suggests a faux-mance between Archie and up-and-comer indie singer Raya.
Now it's up to Rose to prove herself and succeed in her mission. The only problem is the more time she spends working for Archie, the harder she is falling for him, and it seems like the feeling might be mutual. With both her romance and her job on the line, Rose will have to make a hard decision.
Public Relations is the perfect escape into the world of celebrity and what goes on behind the scenes. Archie and Rose’s story is sexy, steamy, smartly written, and loads of fun! A romantic comedy for 2017 that will satisfy your mind and your heart!
Public Relations by Katie Heaney and Arianna Rebolini
Standalone New Adult, Chick-Lit Romance
Public Relations by Katie Heaney and Arianna Rebolini was a different read for me. The cover and lack of naked chest appealed to me and I was interested in reading about PR for musicians, because my son is always looking for an agent. It was an interesting read. I liked it. I wanted so much to love it, but it was a little too young, and not enough romance for me. I would classify it more as chick-lit for 20 year olds.
I was very surprised to find, when writing this review, that I didn’t highlight one quote. I am tempted to go back and search for one, but honestly, there wasn’t one quote that stood out enough to highlight it, and a quick search backed that up. That’s not necessarily bad, it’s just different. There were no one-liners either romantic or funny, but there was still a good story.
Rose is a young, smart PR rep in the music industry. When her boss couldn’t make it to a meeting with one of the biggest stars they repped, she was asked to sit in. The client was a young British star, Archie Fox, who was aging out of his young, pop-star crowd. A friend pointed out to me that the guy is basically Harry Styles down to the description of his tattoos (which means nothing to me, I just know he’s in One Direction). The other executives are giving some bad suggestions on how to make him cool again, and though she wasn’t supposed to speak, young Rose couldn’t help herself, and suggested a fauxmance with one of the coolest up-and-coming YouTube sensations, Raya.
Archie and his people liked the idea (or is it Rose he liked?) so much that they insisted Rose be in charge of the PR for him. Since the book was told in only Rose’s point of view, we can see her fighting her crush on Archie the whole time, but she is a hard working professional who is very career-driven, and the story reflects that. It was much more about the PR business and about Archie’s fake romance with Raya, as well as Rose’s dating attempts, than it was about the romance between Archie and Rose.
Sloooooow burn. But when the romance kicked in in the last 30% I really began to enjoy it more. Don’t get me wrong, I actually liked reading about the behind-the-scenes PR work, but I am a romance girl, and I was happy when I finally got that.
Likes:
•Lots and lots of pop culture.
•Very smartly written.
•Love the best friend relationship.
•Fun flirty banter.
Dislikes:
•Not enough romance.
•A little more YA than I expected.
•I would have loved to have had a little of his perspective.
•Though this doesn’t factor into my rating, the regular price of this e-book is higher than many NYT bestselling author’s books and it’s one author’s debut and the other has two books. When the e-book costs more than the paperback, it just doesn't make sense to me.
The Down & Dirty:
If you love a Hollywood or Rock Star romance, this might appeal to you. If you are into the behind-the-scenes image and PR stuff (basically planting fake stories), this might appeal to you. If you are looking for a young, hip, chick-lit novel, this may work for you. But if you want a Hollywood romance, this may not be enough. Perhaps I’m a bit too old for the demographic, but I think I just enjoy a little more romance, or maybe I needed a little of his point of view, but for me Public Relations never crossed the line from like to love.
Rating 3 Stars, 3.5 Heat
I couldn't put the book down. I really liked Rose and I couldn't get enough of Archie. Their relationship was fun and one of those slow burn romances.
Some reviewers are convinced that Archie is Harry Styles. They seem to be put off by that. I don't know why I loved it. But them again, I'm kinda obsessed with Harry. I'm not afraid to admit it. Anyways, if I had one complaint about this book, it would be that it needed more Archie.
The characters were stellar, the plot was fun and well written, and the overall writing was easy, flowing, and kept me wanting to read just one more chapter. I'd love to see more books from this new writing duo. Maybe more from Rose and Archie's world. PR and celebrities.
I found this to be a quick, easy read and a delightful story!
We meet Rose Reed, a young up and coming PR person, gets the chance of a lifetime when she's tossed into a meeting with British pop sensation, Archie Fox, due to her boss being called out of town unexpectedly. She was not supposed to talk, but spins an idea that Archie & his manager both like, and they request SHE be in charge of his career rehab.
They toss him into a faux relationship with young up and coming pop star Raya. The public is buying it, and it appears to be working.
However, things start to brew between Rose & Archie that neither saw coming. One thing leads to another and their relationship could jeopardize both his career rehab and her career.
I thought this was a fun story and I just loved Rose (& grew to love Archie) and was cheering for them the whole way through!
Thanks to Netgalley & Grand Central Publishing for allowing me an ARC copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I so very much enjoyed Public Relations. It was a fun, low drama, chick lit style read. Within the first few pages I was enthralled with the characters and fully invested in the story. It was refreshing to read about a young career-driven woman dealing with some issues prevalent today (but lucky her, she gets to work alongside a pretty famous pop star.) As someone who enjoys social media and pop culture (to a certain degree) I found it really fun to read about the behind the scenes of the stars and how PR really works. All in all, Public Relations was a delightful read and I'll definitely be looking for more from these authors.
Joanne was the head of the - Weaver Gerald Public Relations- music civisions. Harper was Rose's best friend , cubicle mate and and ally in perpetual fear of Joanne. Joanne had left for Dubar as Trevor had sent for her. Trevor James was one of the biggest client’s at the firm Kelsey works at. Trevor was a complete drama queen. Rose was a media relations associate. Rose is to go to a meeting for Joanna. They were putting together a band for Archie Fox. Weaver, Daniel, and Witz will be there your job is to not speak but take detailed notes and email them to Joanne. Rose was only there to keep them accountable. Rose was both terrified and incredibly flattered that Joanne referred to rose as the “ music person”. Archie Fox was an international pop star. What Rose knew about Archie Fox is he blew up about five years ago with an ameteur vidoe of one of his open- mike- night performances got a million views on YouTube within thirty six hours.Dave had been there for Rose as she got rejected from Spin, The Valley Voice, New York Magazine and Rolling Stone for a summer fellowship. Dave had got his dream job on the first try- an editorial internship at MacMillian. Rose was finally offered an internship at The Dish, a gossipy pop-culture site with a sizable following. Rose got comfortable sending professional emails. Rose learned how to convert news items into flash and succulent articles people would read. The most meaningful time at The Dish was Rose’s access to the occasional interview whenever actors or singers were at the office. One in particular to a singer named Michaela Jones changed everything. Michaela had fronted pop punk band in the two thousands disappeared for some time and recently came back as a folksy solo artist. Rose was obsessed with her. Anthony was the closest thing Rose had to a work friend. He let Rose in on the interview with Michaela. Then Michael’s publicist walked .Rose walked in she expected Ryan Weaver, Sam Daniels and Keiran Fitz to be there but instead Archie Fox was there.Rose noticed he looked tired, and slightly older than she thought but he was still cute. First it was suggested Mission 5 wanted Archie to model their trademark brotastic beachwear but Archie didn’t want to be a model. Then the men asked if Archie had considered Vlogging. It was the most direct efficient route to Archie’s audience. Then they mentioned Archie being seen with someone else trending right now, another musician. Then the men mentioned Madison Reener but Archie’s manager Marie felt Madison was a little wholesome for Archie. Then the males mentioned Dame Wallis. Rose brought up Raya and said Ray was up and coming , young, and cool. Then Archie said he liked Raya. Archie was a fan of her music, he had seen her one or two times and he found Raya good company. Maria said it sounded good to her. Maria also said she wanted Rose as Archie’s point person and told Rose she would be in touch with her. Rose was to be Archie’s personal public relations representative. It had been five years since Rose’s only serious relationship ended. As he had cheated but to be honest the magic had been missing for a long time.
I liked this story a lot and I also liked the plot a lot. It dragged a little for me but didn’t really hurt the story for me. This story kept my attention from the beginning to the end. I loved how much of a friend Harper was to Rose. I also liked Raya a lot. I loved Archer and Rose together and was rooting for them. I loved how things ended up. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and i recommend.
I thought that this was cute and sweet, with a bit of sexy. Very much a New Adult Chick Lit. I liked the PR angle a lot, and would have enjoyed a more in-depth look at that, especially involving Archie. The Raya aspect was interesting and felt mostly realistic.
I wanted more Archie though, for multiple reasons, including the fact that he seemed like a great character and because he was Rose's love interest. The guy Rose goes on a fee dates with, Neil, and how far things went with him felt unnecessary. I wanted more cute and sexy moments where the chemistry between Archie and Rose was undeniable.
I feel that this really needed the couple to be together sooner than 80% in. And/or this would have benefited from having dual POV where we knew how Archie felt. Until the dinner Archie cooks, there was nothing overtly flirty or romantic enough between them to do much to showcase their chemistry.
Overall, this seemed a bit slow and like we were in Rose's head too much for while.
Unfortunately, after a couple of attempts, I chose not to finish this book. I felt like it was geared toward an audience much younger than me -- an audience who may, say, really really love Harry Styles. It read a little bit like fan fiction -- which I'm not opposed to on principle, but in this case I just wasn't able to connect with it.
This will go live on my blog on May 27. Kellyvision.wordpress.com
Rose is working in a PR firm and has just landed her first major client. It's her job to make sure the world thinks that Archie Fox is dating Raya, an up-and-coming musician. Except she's pretty sure she likes Archie...and he may like her back!
This book is a pure delight. It's effervescent and should be read on the beach or poolside. It's the ideal vacation read and I dare you to not smile while you read it.
I love Rose. She's clever and so clearly career-driven, so watching her decide to risk everything was a total cheer-worthy moment.
I loved every second of reading this. Recommended.
