I really enjoyed this book. I like the concept of sending off your DNA to find your soul mate and the impact that can have on your life, I thought this was fast paced and couldn't wait to find out what happened next.
However I would say that this isn't a thriller and feel it is marketed wrong
I am MASSIVELY behind on my TBRs so I had already watched the series on Netflix before reading this. I enjoyed the show but the book is *chefs kiss* One of those books that you can't stop reading but don't want it to end. So many twists and turns! And even with everything that went down, I'd still take that test.
5 stars
Mostly, I thought this book was okay. However, I was disappointed by the lazy research - a thatched house in the Lake District? I think not. A great shame, as with a little more care this could have been a good book.
It's a good premise but I found it difficult to like anyone in particular so I wasn't pressed to continue reading.
Omg......... this book was amazing I flew threw the pages with Olympic speed I was hooked from the very first page. I found it full of twists and turns threw out and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way threw I would defiantly recommend this book if you like a good book to keep you reading threw the night hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did
This book had such a unique premise. Really enjoyed the tightly woven plot too. A great read. 5 stars.
A fascinating concept and it was very well executed by the author, love his writing style and found this to be a truly unique read
Feel awful that my lack of organisation has meant some reviews on NetGalley haven't been updated...From the moment I picked it up I found myself rifling the pages, desperate to see where this was going. With a large cast of characters and over a hundred chapters I wasn’t sure how this would work...but everything is paced well, and each character is very quickly identifiable. Piecing together the details was an absorbing process.
The concept is intriguing. A test has been discovered that, in exchange for a DNA sample, gives you the identity of your Match...the person you are destined to be with. Taking the risk out of choosing love seems to appeal, and the success of the Match Your DNA app shows this. Since its inception, the app has appeared to change society. However, the premise raises some intriguing ethical issues and the book’s success depends very much on the fact that people are not always honest.
Upon starting the book I was immediately struck by how quickly I raced through the opening quarter. Learning the details of the various characters who’d signed up to the app and their motivations definitely added something to reading about their reactions and subsequent behaviour. Though the characters were all very different, I was keen to see what would happen.
Certain characters stuck out: Christopher, Mandy, Kevin and Nick. Though I won’t reveal why, their stories engaged and captivated me. Though the details are not always palatable, it was hard not to get sucked into trying to work out what would happen for each of them.
There was a point in the story - a little over halfway through - that my attention wandered a little. We were learning the details of these characters, but I was struggling to see the significance of their tales to the overall book. It felt as if we were going to have to be given a reason for these very different stories to be threaded together. It took a while, but we got there...and certainly made me review some of the interactions.
So, given all these positives, why not five stars? It’s hard to explain without giving away details of the plot. However, Ellie’s story hadn’t captured my attention sufficiently to really engage me by the time key information came out later. The moral ambiguity surrounding Ellie in the closing stages rather concerned me. There’s also a part of me that thinks relationships don’t come with hard and fast guarantees, and anyone so desperate to seek such affirmation is trying to ignore their personal responsibility for their choices and the way they impact on others. Perhaps on a different day this would have got five stars from me, and it’s certainly a read I’d recommend highly.
I really could not get into this book, the subject matter was difficult to connect with and I gave up reading it.
I wish this book was better. It felt like a cheap, discount thriller.... Something you find yourself watching and being too lazy to turn it off- or because you’ve watched too much to stop.
A sad disappointment for me. This year has not been good. I hoped for a romance with some comedy and heart. It couldn’t be further from it!
Another brilliant read by Mr Marrs. This book was just brilliant and I really found it hard to put down at times, there is nothing about this book I didn’t enjoy and I really loved the different characters and all their stories. So good
Oh John Mars - where have you been hiding all this time? Mind you, what is it they say? The best things are worth waiting for?! Well, The One was definitely worth the wait!
I know they it's cliche, but I literally couldn't put this book down. I just had to keep reading through to the end.
The story revolves around a DNA test that promises to match you to your ideal partner. We meet a number of characters who have used this service in their quest for true love. But is everything as it seems? Course not! It sounds on paper like a romance novel, but don't be fooled, this is not all flowers and fluttering eyelids. Infact, it can be far from it.
The chapters move at a pace, alternating between the various characters, which for me kept me turning quickly in my anxiousness to find out what happens. There are a few twists and cliffhangers that meant it was late into the night before I was able to put it down.
If this is the authors debut I have high hopes for his future work!
Love at first sight, or at first drop of blood? If someone assured you that a simple blood test would allow you to find your soul mate, would you do this analysis?
The theory is perfect, the analysis works, but chemistry has never been able to take the human soul into account, and this, of course, is a harbinger of disasters.
The book is interesting, well written, but some characters, including, paradoxically, that of the scientist who discovered the gene of love at first sight, are described in a confusing and contradictory way.
The One has been on my TBR pile for ages and I am so glad I finally read it. Each and every one of the strands within John Marrs's book is gripping and shocking in its own way. The book is highly original and brings to life many imaginative possibilities from its fictional life-changing premise. The characters were credible and sometimes heartbreaking and each of their stories springs surprises and builds to a satisfying end.
The One is a very enjoyable read, despite some of the more heart-wrenching plot points, it is fast-paced, full of twists and turns and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a strong character-led mystery thriller. Read it now before the forthcoming Netflix series (which I now can't wait for!)
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of the book.
I have this on TBR list for ages but when I saw it is being made by netflix it shot right to number 1 on the list. I am so glad I got round to it as it certainly did not disappoint. The short chapters each alternating between the main characters stories kept me hooked and I whizzed through the book. Original premise cleverly executed which I could not put down. Looking forward to the Netflix adaptation now.
This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I loved the chapters switching focus between different characters and I couldn't wait to cycle through the characters and find out how their surprise filled stories developed.
I will certainly be reading more books by this author.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this ARC of The One by John Marrs.
Romance is about to get a lot easier with the help of this new science that is designed to match you to your perfect DNA partner. Told through the stories of multiple characters and how they all either attempted or resisted this new program to find The One.
This would be a brilliant book club book. It's incredibly readable, great stories, hard to put down. It raises a ton of moral, ethical, sexual, and familial issues, which I love. Very fun read.
What an utterly fabulous book, I literally couldn't put it down. Whilst it wasn't what I was expecting it had dark humour, cliff hangers and great characters, the ending was so perfect I had goose bumps. I have recommended it to everyone I know.
Correct rating 4.5
Clever, original story. The multiple character stories kept me interested all the way through the book. Will be looking out for this authors next book.
Really hope that this one gets picked up for a movie because it feels like it would translate really well onto a big screen. An bizarre combination of thriller and science fiction the One will have you gripped right to the very end.
