This book had me lost within a world of cowboys, ranches and horses – I think the setting and the characterization are really well done and I enjoyed getting to know the characters and watching the family interactions and dynamics.
Blue is a round character, obstinate and a “list man”, but I appreciated how the author didn’t take that determination too far and made him soften and change from his initial non-compromise position. I liked that he had so many facets – Marine, rancher, a loyal brother, a son seeking his mother. Sometimes I felt the heroine was too insecure, especially with her family, but perhaps that’s understandable.
Even if this is part of a series and I haven’t read the previous book, I had no problem following the plot and the characters. I preferred the first part of the story, where hero and heroine were feeling attracted for each other and evolving and changing before our eyes.
Blue (BB) Morgan is a soon to be discharged Gunnery Sergeant for the Marines. He’s returning to the family farm to help run it. He’s a black and white kind of guy, with little understanding of the shades of grey in between. He’s got his life mapped out with a plan in place…until he starts spending time with the new vet.
Jenna McDonald is filling in at her uncle’s veterinary business until her cousin finishes her degree. She has a lot of baggage she’s dealing with. Her parents were addicts and she spent several years in foster care until she was finally adopted by the McDonalds. The whole family are high achievers and their expectations for Jenna are more than she wants for herself. Lots of insecurities, self esteem issues, doubt in her self worth. Her constant insecurities despite what was consistently right in front of her was a little grating after a while.
Initially Blue is hesitant, then Jenna pulls back. Although I don’t really feel she was ever all in until the end.
Still loving Granny Ruth and Roy. I hated Jenna’s sister Lilly and her parents. I really want to see who Nate and Yvonne end up with, and am looking forward to Ry and HW’s stories.
This is the second book in the series. There is a continuing storyline. It can be read as a standalone but I don’t recommend it.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley.
