This book was so entertaining. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was involved until the end. The characters were complex and interesting. I found the story to be well paced and engrossing throughout the whole book. I was invested in the couple throughout the book and felt all the emotions through both the highs and lows of the story. The side characters were such an integral part of this story as well. This is the love story i needed to read at this time. If you want an entertaining and well written book this is it for you
An enjoyable read. A quirky cosy murder mystery. Apparently this is a reissue. I hadn't read any of the series before & this is book 9. I could still connect to the book but probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first 8 and knew the characters better.
Bridesmaids Revisited is the ninth novel in the Ellie Haskell Mystery series by Dorothy Cannell. In this installment, Ellie receives a letter from her Grandmother Sophia’s childhood friends telling her that Sophia wants to get in touch with her. That would be great, except for the fact that Sophia is long dead. Against her better judgment, Ellie decides to visit her Grandmother’s old friends and ends up uncovering long-buried family secrets, and the identification of a murderer. These accomplishments are not without some peril, however, and Ellie and the Bridesmaids are put in danger throughout.
Cannell is a good storyteller, and makes her characters come alive. The storyline, however, is a bit hard to relate to, especially for readers who shun the paranormal and laugh at séances and other similar goings-on. It’s all in fun, though, and this cozy novel is fast-moving, easy to read, and suitable for all ages. Even though Bridesmaids Revisited is on the light side, there is building suspense, and, since Ellie is likeable, readers will likely not put down the novel until the good characters are safely out of imminent danger that occurs in several scenarios. The writing is good, and the story is laced with plenty of humor.
Bridesmaids Revisited is not the best book in the series (there are 13 so far), but fans won’t want to miss any of the installments that include Ellie and her adventures. Since the novel is short and can be read in a minimum amount of time, it’s perfect to take on an airplane ride or camping trip.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This book was relatively well written and had moments that caught my attention but I just didn't connect with the storyline or the main character, Ellie Haskell. She really annoyed me which prevented me from really enjoying the story as she is the person who is conveying the events of the book. I believe that this book is one that has been reissued and that there are several books that come before it which may be why I struggled with the storyline and understanding this character.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review. While it wasn't for me and I wasn't really caught up in the mystery of it because I struggled to find the mystery, other people may find the character quite charming and the supporting cast of Ellie's grandmother's friends was quite quirky.
This was reissued. While it took me awhile to get into it was light and humorous. I could follow along but would recommend reading the first eight books
This wasn't bad, but I thought it was a weaker entry in the Ellie Haskell series. I loved the earlier books, but this one wasn't a winner for me. There was less family/relationship drama (since Ben and the kids were away), so that took away some of the interesting parts for me. It couldn't capture my attention - I kept drifting away from the book, stopped and started too many times to count, and was hard-pressed to maintain enough interest to finish it (which may be why I had trouble keeping track of all the characters). I think the author is gifted and I enjoyed earlier installments in this series, but this may be the end of the Ellie Haskell road for me.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was a cute little mystery novel, but way too predictable. The murderer is obvious from that character's first entrance, and the fact that literally no one ever suspects that person only makes it clearer that he or she is the guilty party. The author seems to poke fun at the tropes of Gothic novels, while simultaneously filling her own book with all of the cliches of a cozy mystery. While it was a fun, quick read, it didn't hold any surprises or twists, which makes me wonder if it can really be classified as a mystery.
I first met the delightful character of Ellie Haskell in The Widows Club, and I have read several more books by this same author since. Her hilarious way of phrasing things and the unforgettable characters are what continue to draw me to her books.
Now, instead of Ellie Haskell uncovering who is murdering the local husbands as she did in The Widows Club, she has received a strange letter from three elderly ladies that she knows of only as the bridesmaids. They were her grandmother’s childhood friends.
They want Ellie to come and visit them. Why? Ellie’s grandmother wants to get in touch with her. That would normally be awesome news, but why can’t her grandmother just write her a letter or call her? Well, her grandmother is no longer with the living.
Ellie’s husband is away with their children at the moment, leaving her free to do some redecorating in their “castle.” She decides that the redecorating can wait. Mrs. Haskell, Ellie’s housekeeper, really wants to go with her but acts like she doesn’t want to. An excuse for her to accompany Ellie comes just in time—her ex-husband has made contact with her and will be coming to visit her. That is the last thing Mrs. Haskell wants to happen.
Ellie sets out to visit the three old ladies and see what is going on. Little does she realize that she is walking into a world of mistaken identities, seances, ghosts, conjurings, and murder. But the answer to questions she has long wondered about are there for her to discover if she can manage to stay alive.
I love the entertaining Dorothy Cannell writes and have since I read The Widows Club many years ago. Bridesmaids Revisited will keep you entertained from the first page until the last.
I was sent a copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If mew have not yet read this series, mew may find the first little bit off putting if mew are not into characters who seem a bit over the line to absurd. It is just the odd relationship between Ellie and her housekeeper, Mrs. Malloy. Stick with it. What will develop is an intriguing and entertaining mystery. Once the story gets started, the over the top nature damps down and what is left is a cracking good tale.
Ellie's mother died when she was a teenager. Her mother never spoke of her parents very much so when she is invited to visit three ladies known to her as "the Bridesmaids" she is curious about what they want.
Ostensibly she is invited to try and help them fend off a developer who wants to turn a lovely village into a holiday camp. However, twisted amongst the secrets and lies, there are connections between Ellie, her mother and grandmother and this developer. I can tell you that there were revelations that I didn't see coming which delighted me. Sometimes I like to "twig" to the mystery and then find out if I am right or wrong. I never like ones that are too obvious. But when I find one that is unexpected, it is a real treat.
I have read other Ellie Haskell books before but you could take this one as a stand alone or go back and read previous ones. I give it four purrs and two paws up.
Didn't realize this wasn't a new one in the Ellie Haskell series but a republished edition. I thought I was getting a new book. Luckily, I hadn't read this one so I still enjoyed the crazy characters and antics of Ellie and her maid. Interesting story with the usual antics of a Dorothy Cannell series. Would recommend for fans of British cozy readers and those who like the little unexpected and/or quirky characters. Great new cover!
Ellie Haskell has a happy life with her husband and three children.... but she can't resist an invitation to visit three of her grandmother's friends. Ellie's mother died when she was 17 and her grandmother died when her mother was a baby so she didn't know much about her family. She was hoping to learn about them on this visit. Be careful what you ask for, right?
I liked the story and the characters, but had one major problem with the book. Apparently the author is from England, or at least the characters in her book are. I'm an American and not familiar with many of the words and phrases that the characters used. I was constantly re-reading sentences and paragraphs. Time consuming and very frustrating. For that reason I don't think I'll be reading books by this author again even though I liked the characters and story.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my opinion. Unbeknownst to me, I had actually read the first book in this series many years ago! So that was a fun surprise when I looked up the series on Goodreads.
This was a fun little mystery. The main character is very likable, there were so many interesting and often hilarious secondary characters, the mystery was intriguing, and there were some good twists for something I figured would just be a fluffy, fun read. I may need to go back and read some of the books in the series I have missed. I definitely recommend this author and this series!
A young Ellie Haskell remembers Rosemary, Thora and Jane, the 3 friends of her grandmother Sophie who were known as the bridesmaids. Now 30 years later, Ellie gets a letter from the bridesmaids informing her that Sophie wants to contact her from the grave. So Ellie and her housekeeper Mrs. Malloy travel to the Old Rectory. Ellie quickly finds herself engrossed in solving a murder that occurred 50 years ago. Sophia's diary, a seance, thwarted love and revenge all play a key role in this mystery.
I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not sure if coming into this series on book 9 made a difference, but I found it hard to get into. It was an ok book overall. I plan on starting the series at book 1 to see if that will change my perspective. It seemed like things were told over and over but there were also parts that needed further explanation. Not at all what I expected from reading the description.
ARC provided by NetGalley and Random House Publishing - Alibi Alibi.
I was surprised with this book, definitely not what I expected.
By this cover I thought it will be a modern cozy mystery, instead you find yourself in a Gothic romance novel. After you adapt to the English phrases and visualize the situation, you get sucked right in to the story.
The characters are well developed and some are complex. The plot is fascinating!
With an unexpected ending.
I'm happy to see this has been reissued- the Ellie Haskell books are a lot of fun. I read this when it was originally published and happily reread it thanks to the Netgalley ARC. My enjoyment hadn't changed. Ellie is a great character, Mrs. Malloy is a trip, and the story itself is just complex enough without being tough. These are not gory mysteries but classic cozies. I was reminded how much I enjoyed the back and forth between Ellie and Mrs. M and between Ellie and Ben (and Ellie and herself). Try this one even if you haven't read the others- it's perfectly fine as a standalone. I hope Cannell writes more soon!
Entertaining with some comedy and a mystery thrown in. Enjoyed.
I love this series. Is it a bit twee? Yes!, and it was just what I needed to distract myself from all the craziness in the world at the moment. Ms. Cannell can write a comedic scene like no other and I always find myself laughing out loud when Ellie and her housekeeper Mrs. Malloy are together. The mysterious are a bit predictable, but it's always nice to sit down with my cup of tea and drop back in to their familiar world and lose myself in the story.
I am normally a big fan of Dorothy Cannell's Ellie Haskell Mystery series. I expected that I would enjoy Bridesmaids Revisited. Ellie's family is out of town at a retreat, and she plans to work on redecorating the house. Instead Ellie ends up taking a trip to visit "The Bridesmaids" who are friends of her long dead grandmother. I found this book to be very disappointing. First so many new characters were introduced that I found it hard to keep everyone straight. These new characters also brought about many sub-plots. I would have had no problem with it all spread over several books, but it was too much going on at once. One would think for these reasons that the book would have been very exciting. However, the story dragged on and on with no real stand out mystery. This is one book in the series I wished I had skipped.
