Hank was rocking in his chair while his nosy cousin Benedict kept banging on the door. Gus is Hank’s dog and companion.Gus was a bit of a weird dog. Maybe Hanks moods were rubbing off on Gus and he was depressed also. The last thing Hank wanted was to talk to anyone. Hank let Benedict know the door had always been unlocked. Hank knew Benedict would not leave. Benedict looked like the modern major CEO . hank said he would never hurt anyone but he saw fear in their eyes whenever he was forced to go out. They thought Hank might snap thing was Hank had already snapped he was just trying to hold the pieces together. Hank was paid to live in the house supposedly to keep the home up and go through all the papers and artifacts the family had collected their many years in Cabrillo. But Hank found he had a knack for this kind of work. Then Benedict said that a woman working on her PHD contacted him and came across one of his great- great grandmother Cat’s letters. There had been an incident with Isobel and Marshall Spencer - Isobel was one of Cat’s daughters and the middle one. Isobel had been attacked and Marshall had tracked the outlaw down but the outlaw had been let go. In the letter some cousins in LA - after the verdict - tried to murder the outlaw. Hank said parts of the story had been vague and Benedict said the woman was going to try to put the pieces together. Then the woman asked if there were letters between Isabel and Spencer that had been written and available. Benedict did not want the letters leaving the house wanted the woman to come to the house to see the letters at the house. Hank said no. Every since Hank had returned from Afghanistan hank had been very reclusive to the point of turning into a hermit. Hank then told Benedict he would be scarce but Benedict said no as he didn’t want anything stolen from the house. Lale ‘s mother asked how long before she graduated and Lale said about two years. She had said this two years ago but then her plan for her dissertation blew up in her face. She had to start from scratch. Then her engagement ended. Lale Lale met hank when she went to finish her research. Hank was acting rude as far as Lale was concerned . But then Hank and Lale started to develop a relationship as time went on. Even though Hank nor Lale wanted one especially as they were so different. But Hank and Lale had a hard time keeping their hands off each other.
This was a good story. I was happy Hank was forced to interact with someone. Then to actually form a relationship and fall in love. I cheered Hank and Lale on . this story was well written and had a great plot. This did drag in some places for me but it wasn’t that bad and i did finish the story. I would have liked to know a little bit more about hank and his war experiences that made him want to revert into a hermit as well as learn more about his family and friends. But I did enjoy this story a lot. I loved the characters and of the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.
This is the first book of Ms Turner's new series titled Always a Cowboy. It centers around Hank Moreno and Lale Pehlivan. He is a veteran with a mental disorder , isolated from his family and society, and she a graduate student specializing in family history.
The story line centers on her research about his family's secrets and in doing the research she discovers not only those secrets but also his. Their relationship is unique and complicated.
Though the storyline was interesting, I felt the plot dragged. I would have wanted more insight into his immediate family and friends, his illness, and Hank in general. I will probably be in the minority, but the book didn’t grab me and involved me. It’s more of a 3.5 star for me .
I was gifted this book by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
