This two-in-one volume brings together Walker Percy’s two novels about his protagonist Will Barrett, a rather aimless and diffident character. His somewhat picaresque journey through life in the American south is explored as he encounters and becomes involved with the eccentric Vaught family. I didn’t really enjoy either novel, primarily because I couldn’t relate to any of the characters, Will included. They all seemed not only unlikeable but also very much mouthpieces for Percy’s thoughts and ideas, and I found myself irritated rather than engaged. Not for me this one.
