Love the range of baked goods and incorporation of seasonal ingredients; this is certainly a book I will find myself baking from a great deal this coming year!

Most nutritionists and the federal government folks have been telling us we need to eat more fruits and vegetables. I do like to eat both fruits and vegetables but I do get bored with the same old thing. I was pleased to see how the author, Ken Haedrich, managed to incorporate produce in so many creative ways. The Harvest Baker: Sweet and Savory Baked Goods Made with with Fresh Vegetables and Herbs was written for bakers who want to include more wholesome foods in their diet.

The author starts his book with a section called Tool Talk where he discusses what to buy when it comes to stocking the kitchen with baking equipment. You will find the following chapters in his book:

For the Love Bread
Crusty Entrees
The Harvest Baker's Sweet Tooth
Top It Off

Some of the recipes you'll find include:

Bacon, Cheddar, and Fresh Corn Muffins
Roasted Carrot Tea Loaf
Corn-Off-The-Cob Sour Cream Corn Bread
Shaker Fresh Herb Bread with Walnuts
Herb and Veggie Flowerpot Bread
Italian Sausage and Broccoli Rabe Pizza
Cabbage and Sausage Stuffed Buns (Bierocks)
Good Basic Pie Dough
Green Pea and Parmesan Cheese Tartlets
Brussels Sprouts Tart Au Gratin
Swiss Chard Galette
Biscuit-Crusted Chicken Pot Pie
Rosemary Lemon Shortbread Cookies
Chocolate Sandwich Cookies with Sweet Herb Mascarpone
Blueberry Gingerbread
Fresh Mint Oreo Cheesecake
Sweet Carrot Pie
Caramel Apple Slab Pie

Recommend.

I can't wait to get this book into my library and more importantly into my kitchen. Delicious, savory, baked goodness on every page along with great tips for freezing, reheating and serving suggestions.

This book is for the bakers who has a vegetable garden, or parents who are at a lost on how to promote more fruits and vegetables into their kids diet. I know I struggle, so any tip about increasing fruits and vegetable intake is welcome.

If you are like my husband, someone who hates sweet stuff, then The Harvest Baker is definitely for you. The author Ken includes a lot of savory recipes, and there is something for everyone. I love how the recipes are laid out, and not all are easy to make. At this stage, I think everything is difficult (because one hand is tied to holding a brat). Once things get easier I will definitely attempt the recipes in the book.

Overall, if you are a fan of healthy eating and baking, The Harvest Baker is the one for you.

This is a very well-made cookbook. There are several recipes I am dying to try. I subtracted a star because I feel the photos, while beautiful, are not plentiful enough. Stock photos of ingredients are included while photos of the completed dishes are left out. I know what a bell pepper looks like but I do not know how the finished recipe should look!
