I did request this sample but I never had the chance to download and read it. Thank you for the opportunity.
Nina LaCour beautifully captures the emotions of young adults. This sneak peek was just enough to show that she is right on target portraying the journey and struggles of a young woman navigating a difficult life. Looking forward to reading the book in its entirety.
I read this except and ended up picking up the book from the library to finish. I loved that this wasn't just about a bisexual or lesbian girl (not entirely sure if she was solidly one or the other) pining over her straight-ish friend. Not everything miserable in your life comes from unrequited love, no matter what gender or sexuality you identify with. It made for a more interesting story.
The sneak peek did nothing to raise my curiosity nor interest in this book. From the intro I could not even figure out what time period this piece is, who is relevant to the story, or what the story was even about.
I purchased a copy of this book after reading the preview. The story is about two best friends, but after the death of one of their grandfathers they drift apart. I loved seeing that even though the unthinkable happened, they cared and loved each other. I loved seeing their relationship play out. Would definitely recommend this book to my students and friends!
Wow. I finished this book in one sitting and I still can't stop thinking about it. It was my first Nina Lacour novel, and it has left me wanting for more of her words, her characters.
I was a bit afraid when I started reading We are Okay, I thought that maybe I wouldn't like the story, since it takes place in the span of a few days, and that maybe it'd be too introspective for my taste but I was oh so wrong. This book was everything I wanted it to be and so much more. I related a lot to Marin, I too lost my mother and I've been left with a lot of questions surrounding her, just like Marin, and reading about her grief mirrored my own, it was both very painful and liberating. I also loved her relation with Mabel, and all the details of the story. How it was about family, first love, grief, growing up, growing apart, and finding oneself again. And the words, oh the words, they all sounded so beautiful, and accurate. As if Nina Lacour had chosen her words very carefully. It was beautiful. And painful, too. I absolutely loved it, and I highly recommend it.
Also, I ABSOLUTELY loved that the book was diverse, it was so refreshing! I really need to chose the books I read carefully, and I need to read more books with diverse characters!
Looking very much forward to the actual book! It was GOOD!
The Listed books below I didn't finish because I either lost interest or didn't like them to finish them!
A very intriguing beginning. I've always enjoyed LaCour's writing ever since I read Everything Leads to You and this was no exception. She just has a way with a turn of phrase. I liked the slight mystery so far, makes me want to read more. I will definitely check out the full book when I have an opportunity.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this sneak peak in exchange for an honest review.
The cover is pretty, the synopsis pick my interest and I saw lot positive review from my goodreads feed so my expectation went up and unfortunately, it did not live my expectation. I am sad to say that I feel nothing when reading this book. Maybe because it started slow and I can't relate to the character
I am sorry that I didn't get a chance to read this excerpt before it was archived.
Based off this sneak peek, We Are Okay is going to be a heartbreak of a novel. Since this was only a preview, I have not yet had the chance to read the whole book, but I do have it checked out and am looking forward to finishing it.
Quick review for a quick read. Leave it to Nina LaCour to tug at my heartstrings every single time I pick up a book from her. For what it's worth, I did enjoy "We Are Okay" though it wasn't as strong for me as some of the author's other narratives (a.k.a "Hold Still"). It's the story of a young woman named Marin who escapes her life after a series of tragedies and has to come to terms with them as her best friend reunites with her over Winter Break while she's in college.
I wasn't surprised by Marin's actions given that I knew she was in a state of denial, grief, and anguish, but it was the reasons behind those emotions that kept me pushing through the novel to see them in full. I'll admit that at times the delivery of these story details is uneven and took me some time to push through, but I always respect and appreciate the genuine way LaCour's able to dig into the raw emotions of her characters. There's much that haunts Marin, and it takes an exploration of the past meeting the present to bring it together (trading between months of memories and present details). I appreciated the range of emotions and coming to terms that Marin shows through the narrative, and felt for her on the note of her relationships with her mother and grandfather, as well as her best friend Mabel and roommate Hannah. The narrative features a prominent character of color and a lesbian relationship with enough moments to feel for the characters even through the events that affect them. I enjoyed getting to know the range of characters in this book and thought it did a fine job of showcasing the dedication of people around Marin to let her know she wasn't lost or forgotten, though her journey after her experiences had her mentally wading through some dark places (some of which I'll admit resonated with me because I've been in that headspace as a result of loss - in more ways than one - before. I don't know if I'd even think to do what Marin did ultimately, but I could see the reasons behind her behavior.)
In the end, it was a solid reading experience for me, a story that I could definitely get behind though it did take some wading through slower, uneven moments in the narrative to get there.
Overall score: 3.5/5 stars.
I enjoyed the first four chapters of this netgalley excerpt and want to read more. It felt fresh to have a story about a girl raised by her grandfather who died recently. Also Marin is a lesbian and the narrative is set at college, which makes it all the more original. The writing was beautiful. This YA novel was released last week in the USA.
Immediately after reading this sneak peek, I opened up my library app and requested that they purchase the book, so you could say I liked it. I will definitely be reading the full version as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Wish I could have read the whole thing, instead of just a sneak peak!
I am already hooked by the story. The characters are so interesting and complex, the relationships are as well. I definitely want to see where the story will go. I hope for more flashbacks with her grandpa in them too. I can't wait to get my hands on a full copy of this.
Interesting intro to what promises to be great writing with a relatable storyline. The portion I read drew me in to Marin's life and troubles leaving me with the strong desire to find out more.
The reviews in the beginning make me think that the YA story will be relatable to many and that the writing stays on it's engaging course. This is a book I will definitely purchase to give me closure on the questions I have hanging over my head concerning Marin's journey and resolution. Good job!
So I have seen plenty of people talking about this book for a while. I went in not knowing anything about the book. I have to say I was intrigued by the cover of the book. I overall enjoyed this sneak peak. I thought the story was interesting. I really want to pick this up soon. I want to know more about Marin and Mabel's relationship. I have some predictions for this book and I would love to see if they end up playing out or if things end up going differently. It is a little bit of a sad story but not everything has to be happy. I do hope there ends up being a happy outcome. I really can't wait to find out what happens next.
