This is the second book in the pancake house mystery series and I have read both, but you would absolutely not feel as if you were missing anything if you read this as a standalone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are all well developed and interesting. Some are likable, some not as likable, but there were plenty of subplots going on in this book just adding to the interest.
It was fairly fast paced and all of the plots were solid. I actually was pretty convinced that I had the main mystery all figured out and it turns out I was wrong, but it was definitely solvable if you paid close attention. There were just many suspects with many motives and you have to pick out the red herrings. The ending was very fast paced and action packed and I couldn't put the book down until I was finished.
I'm definitely a huge fan of this series and I can't wait for the next installment! I would not hesitate to give this book five stars and recommend it to anyone.
This was a well-written engaging mystery with a very good central character, Marley McKinney. I hadn't read the first book in this series which did not prevent me from really enjoying getting to know Marley and her friends.
Marley is running Flip Side, a pancake restaurant, she inherited in the first book. She is surrounded by good people, has a great pet cat and a lovely boyfriend (who she knew when she was younger). Life should be pretty terrific except for her nemesis, Ida Winkler, who is not Marley's biggest fan and is doing everything she can to disturb Marley's life including spray painting insults on the outside of Marley's business.
Marley is not going to put up with this behaviour but before she can stop Ida in her tracks, someone else stops Ida for good - and lucky Marley she finds the dead body. In not time at all, Marley is in the middle of a murder investigation and at first, it seems like she is the prime suspect. However, suspicion shifts quickly and there are any number of people who appear to want Ida pushing up daisies.
The cast of extras are what really make this book work. There are some great moments where Marley interacts with her staff from her restaurant who always have her back - they are an interesting and colourful group. The moments of romance with Brett are sprinkled nicely throughout the story line and you hope that all will end well between them.
Absolutely worth the time to see if Marley can find the guilty party and prevent anyone else from facing a deathly fate.
Loved this one! Sarah Fox has definitely improved in the second in series. I felt so much was missing in the last book but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much better this one was for me. I still didnt like how much sluething Marley did but I know that with time, this will be a great series. I can't wait for her to continue with Marley's story, and Brett's included!
Marley has settled into her new life in Wildwood Cove as the owner of The Flip Side. However, someone in this tourist town doesn't seem to like this outsider and graffiti is the first of several annoyances she has to deal with. I really like the setting of this series and the secondary characters, particularly those that work at The Flip Side are good. The mystery is well paced and I liked figuring things out with Marley.
This was another fun installment of this cozy mystery series. I like to read these kind of books as a need between more intense bookings, but that does not take away from the enjoyment factor. I can't wait to read the next book!
“For Whom the Bread Rolls” is the second installment of the Pancake House Mystery series by Sarah Fox.
Marley McKinney is enjoying life running her late uncle’s pancake house, The Flip Side. However, her plans to run a successful business are thwarted by Ida Winkler, the town grouch who has been defacing the restaurant and making prank phone calls. When Marley goes to her house to confront her; she discovers her body. Of course, she herself is a suspect.
Marley and lots of fun supporting characters, including hunky boyfriend Brett make this a fun, enjoyable read.
I have not read the first book in this series, but it made no difference. All the tidbits that you needed to know from the first book were explained in this one, making it a great standalone read. Perfect for the beach or car ride. Neither gruesome nor filled with sex scenes. A perfect “cozy mystery”.
My only critique is that I did get a bit tired of the descriptions of Marley going to the beach to swim or walk. Enough already.
Thanks to this book, I learned what a “cozy” mystery was! I have been calling them “Murder She Wrote” books as I didn’t know any better. Now I do! Cozies are typically set in small towns and feature amateur sleuths who investigate local murders which take place off stage. The murderers are not generally psychopaths or serial killers and are members of the community where the murder occurs. You won't be afraid of the dark while reading one of these books.

Easy to read cozy for those who like mysteries and want something that is entertaining and engaging.
Book received from NetGalley.
This was a cute, cozy, culinary mystery. While it is the second book in the series and I have not read the first I didn't have an issue keeping things straight that were mentioned in the first book. She gives enough background that reading at least these first two out of order is not an issue. While I did guess "whodunnit" before the end of the book I wasn't that far off so I still enjoyed the ending. While it's not the best mystery I've read lately I felt it was a good way to escape for a few hours and I will give more in this series a try.
I enjoyed this mystery. It made for a relaxing afternoon's reading. My one complaint is that there were a lot of characters and I had a bit of trouble telling them apart.
I would like to thank Random House Publishing Group – Alibi for allowing me a free electronic ARC of this book, via Netgalley, in exchange for an open and honest review.
And I really am quite thankful they did approve me to read it as I wasn’t too sure they would after what I said about book one ‘The Crepes of Wrath’. :-D
In my defence I did say a lot of nice things about book one as it really did tick all the right boxes to be a great little cosy crime… I just could not connect to or truly enjoy it and I don’t know why. I do blame myself. Maybe I was in the wrong mood?
Still, I am so very pleased to be able to tell you that my belief that my failure to connect was a one off and due to it suffering ‘first book jitters’ is true as…. I loved ‘For Whom the bread rolls’. I don’t know why, but this time there was just that right bit of everything and so it clicked, was enjoyable and read within three days or so. Obviously a good read when my brain inhales it that quickly.
I don’t know whether it was just because the characters were more established, whether it was because the whole storyline was more grounded and seemed to know where it was going… I really can’t say. But I will say that all the positives I said about the first book in the ‘A Pancake House Mystery’ still stand. And all the constructive criticisms (not negatives) I said are now gone. All the boxes for a good American cosy crime/ mystery are still ticked, this reader was satisfied and we can all go on living happily ever after…. Until the next one. ;-)
What may have happened is this book wasn’t so cluttered and wasn’t trying to fit so many things in all at once… which is often the case of the first book in a series and so one should never judge a series on the first book alone. Wait for the next one, read it and realise the author has it all together now and it is going to be fine. Then just sit down, grab a cuppa and enjoy the ride… I mean read.
So – story plot good. Cosy/ Mystery – well paced. Characters – approachable and believable. Padding and red herrings – just enough to keep it ticking over and interesting without smothering the actual story. All in all as perfect as an American small town cosy/ mystery could be and something I feel is going to be perfect on the summer reading lists of cosy crime lovers all over the Americas this coming summer. It works just as good for we who are descending into winter down here in Australia. ;-)
Would I recommend this book to others?
I would… but with any series I would always say start at the first book and move forward. But I would also warn people to not panic if they didn’t quite gel with ‘The Crepes of Wrath’ as ‘For Whom the Bread Rolls’ totally makes up for is and will ensure you really get hooked on the ‘A Pancake House Mystery’ series.
Would I buy this book for myself?
I can honestly see myself collecting them as eBooks. Yes I wasn’t that enamoured with the first book, but I could still see its potential. Second book well and truly makes up for it and really makes me look forward to the next one and filling my Amazon cart in a bit of a cosy spending spree. ;-)
In summary: Great second book in an American cosy/ mystery series that has a LOT of potential to be awesome. Highly recommend.
For Whom The Bread Rolls is the second book in the A Pancake House Mystery series and works well as a stand alone. While the book doesn’t go into great detail about what happened before, it does explain enough so that you won’t feel left in the dark if you begin with this one.
The author, Sarah Fox, has definitely created a well-written cozy mystery series full of interesting, multidimensional characters. Through the characters actions and conversations, I feel as if I’ve gotten to know what motivates them. The main character, Marley, has been brought to life so well, we even see how the loss of many family members has affected her making her feel insecure about her burgeoning relationship with her boyfriend and her fears that as suspect in a murder investigation, her business will be hurt. When Marley takes matters into her own hands, and goes in search of the murderer, not everyone is willing to talk to her. There are so many people who dislike the victim, that it’s difficult to come up with the culprit. In the end, all the loose strings are neatly tied up—which is something I liked about this book. Sometimes mystery endings are ridiculous, I can’t understand why the author would do a complete about face and made the book feel disappointing after I’ve hung in for so long, but I’m happy to say, this book isn’t like that.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries (and pancake house recipes), this is a good series to pick up.
Marley McKinney is living in Wildwood Cove after the death of her cousin Jimmy. Everything is going well she is running the pancake house, living in the house left to her, dating her childhood crush. Marley is happy until she has to deal with Ida an old disgruntled employee and the aunt of the guy who killed her uncle. Ida is causing trouble for the pancake house and Marley goes to talk to her to end it once and for all. When she gets to Ida's house she finds her dead and winds up being the suspect in the murder. Marley must work hard to clear her own name.
In an Oyster Shell - Another great installment of the Pancake house mysteries.
The Pearls - The small town setting is idyllic. It's a great place to set a book. I love small town settings because you get familiar with all the characters in town. You get a feel for small town life. The author makes it feel like you are right there enjoying the festivities of the town.
The characters in this series are marvelous. Marley is a great heroine backed by some great supporting characters. There is Ivan her surly cook who is really a softy at heart and would do anything to make sure Marley is safe. There is the cat flapjack though not a human character a character all the same. This is just a small sample of the great characters this series has to offer.
The mystery is just as exciting and multi-faceted as the last book. The author has a knack for writing complicated yet entertaining plots. I like a mystery that surprises me and this one did.
The romance is sweet and kicked up a notch. It makes me look forward to future books because I can't wait to see what happens between Marley and her Beau.
The Sand -It's a great book!
Marley McKinney owns The Flip Side, a pancake house in a small seaside town. Ida Winkler is out to make Marley's life miserable with a series of childish pranks. But when Marley finds Ida's body with her stolen bloody lamp base nearby things become even more serious. For Whom the Bread Rolls has likeable characters and a victim you'll love to hate. Written at an easy pace and the setting will have you wishing you were vacationing on the beach. It is the second book in the A Pancake House Mystery series.
This is a great cozy mystery featuring Marley, a single young woman who has recently left her city life for a quiet life in a beach town after inheriting a home and restaurant. Everything is great until she finds a dead body. She's determined to identify the murderer.
I loved the story and the characters. The book was well written and was an easy read. I'll definitely be reading this author again!
So excited to get to read the next chapter in Marley's life. She is one of my favorite characters and this book kept me turning pages long after I should've been sleeping! I absolutely love the fact that she's a (pretty good) sleuth and manages to get herself and her friends out of trouble! These books vaguely remind me of Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy series. Absolutely love it!!
For Whom The Bread Rolls is the second book in the Pancake House Mystery series by Sarah Fox. This book stands on its own, but I had read the first book in the series last year. Marley is back at The Flip Side, a pancake house she inherited in her former hometown. When the woman harassing her is murdered, Marley becomes a person of interest and works to clear her name. I enjoyed this book but did not love it. I was annoyed at the amount of time spent on Marley's love life. I read cozy mysteries because I like mysteries not romance. I am not giving up on the series. However, I would like to see the mystery have a more prominent role in the next book.
Review by Kathleen Costa
Marley McKinney had a rough start returning home, but when she inherited a beautiful Victorian house by the beach and local pancake restaurant from her grandmother’s cousin Jimmy, she decides to stay in Wildwood Cove. The Flip Side is doing very well, and Marley is settling in and making great friends. But, when she comes to work and finds graffiti painted across the front windows, prank calls all morning, and a new purchase stolen right off of her front porch, she knows something is not right. Believing Ida Winkler, curmudgeon extraordinaire, is the culprit, she decides to confront her and come to a friendly agreement. Ok…have you read a cozy mystery before? That’s right…Ida ends up dead, and Marley is a ‘person of interest.’
Marley tries to keep things going at the restaurant and fend off all the questions about the murder hoping that tourists and regulars will not be scared away. She has Brett Collins along with her cat Flapjack and a new furry friend Bentley found injured on the beach to take her mind off the tragic events and gossip, but she decides to take a more active role to find the killer. She jogs about the area trying to clear her mind discovering suspicious dump sites down by the river, overhears more than one curious conversation, and spots shadowy figures skulking around the crime scene. There are several residents of whom she asks lots of intrusive questions, but she is always forthright in telling the police all she uncovers. They, however, continue to tell her to stay out of the investigation for her safety…but we know she won't do that.
“For Whom the Bread Rolls” earns 5/5 Ivan’s Maple Pecan Sticky Rolls! Yummm!
This book 2 in Sarah Fox’s Pancake House Mystery is great with or without maple syrup! She has written a delightful book with a clever mystery, sweet romance, and beautiful descriptions of the Northwest, the town, the woods, and the ocean. I enjoyed Marley and her clever deductions, and although I had someone else as the killer, the final solution was perfect…the clues were there, I just took them in a different direction. Those fans who have read book 1, “The Crepes of Wrath,” will be thrilled joining Marley and her friends on this adventure, and newbies, like me, will get enough background to be caught up quickly. However, there are some references to events in Book 1 that might be considered ‘spoilers,’ but maybe I misunderstood. I am not deterred and am headed off to read it like I would any prequel. The first book included some great recipes from Ivan’s kitchen at The Flip Side, but my ARC didn’t. But, looking at the book description on Amazon, you’ll discover some of the treats served up are included. Yummm! It’s a great entertaining read! I highly recommend this series.
For Whom The Bread Rolls is the second book in the Pancake mystery series by Sarah Fox. This is a delightful series with a great setting, fun characterization , and a well crafted sleuth. I enjoy the fast paced witty writing of this series and the pancake house is fun to spend time with. I highly recommend this series for your reading enjoyment.
