Not in My Wildest Dreams is the second book in the McKenna series by Jamie Hollins, however I think they each stand up well on their own. While those that have read the first book, The Best Part of Me, will have some prior knowledge of the characters and be eager to see how this plays out, newcomers to the series will still fully enjoy the read.
It really sucks to be in love with someone who sees you as nothing more than a friend. Darcy Owens knows this from personal experience. From the moment she met Sean McKenna as a shy ten-year-old, he’s owned her heart. So when he asks for her help with an important construction project, she can’t say no. Building a boutique hotel on Boston’s waterfront is a career-making opportunity, and Sean needs Darcy’s interior design expertise. She’s incredibly talented, and there is no one he trusts more. He knows he can always count on his childhood friend, but doesn’t know why he’s thinking about her tight skirts and blue eyes instead of tight deadlines and blueprints. When Sean and Darcy’s excitement about their work turns into an entirely different kind of excitement, it’s a sexy surprise. But they soon realize that building a new relationship is more challenging than building a new hotel, especially when life-long habits and old insecurities create cracks in the foundation.
Not in My Wildest Dreams is a book about two grown adults getting past their own insecurities and hang ups to discover that their best friend can be so much more. Darcy is a tough as nails girl with a love of whiskey and a quick wit. Sean has a growing career, but a well earned reputation for loving the ladies. When this best friends cross the line, they are both terrified and the majority of the conflict comes from lack of communication and misunderstandings. The characters are well written, and their issues make complete sense, and the interaction they have is engaging. Although, I have to admit that when a couple's biggest issues could be resolved by a mature conversation and acting like adults, I tend to get a little frustrated with the characters. This is the case here, although I will admit that when Sean steps up and makes good, I was thrilled and while I was with Darcy in her skepticism I knew she would not hold out.
Not in My Wildest Dreams is an entertaining and engaging read. My emotions were fully invested through out the read, whether irritated with our couple in their inability to communicate or trust in themselves, or smiling broadly when they got things right. I look forward to reading the next book.
What’s it About? Sean and Darcy have known each other since they were kids and Darcy’s been in love with him since then but Sean only sees her as a friend. When Sean asks Darcy for help on a project he’s working on she doesn’t hesitate to say yes but when the excitement of the job turns into something steamy, things between Sean and Darcy change drastically. Now they have to deal with feelings and old insecurities while trying to build a relationship that could make or break them both.
Overall reaction to the story? Overall Not in My Wildest Dreams wasn’t my cup of tea. The angst level was too much sometimes and Darcy just got on my dang nerves with her incessant whining and overdone insecurity issues. Sean could be unbelievable clueless at times when it came to Darcy and a tad insensitive. As much as I wanted to be all in with this friends to lovers story I just couldn’t.
Describe the hero in five words: Stubborn. Clueless. Driven. Intelligent. Insensitive.
Did you like him? I wanted to punch him.
Why? Sean starts out being a self centered jerk of a man-whore and normally that wouldn’t be too big of an issue IF he had started to change throughout the story but he doesn’t. He spends the majority of Not in My Wildest Dreams being the same jerk until like three fourths of the story in when he has a too sudden change of character. He’s not really that nice to Darcy either and I just couldn’t see why she would consider him a friend if he treated her with so little consideration. Just nope.
Describe the heroine in five words: Insecure. Whiny. Intelligent. Snarky. Weak.
Did you like her? Nope.
Why? I had some sympathy for Darcy by the end but it wasn’t enough to overcome my serious dislike of her lack of a backbone. I couldn’t understand why she was in love with Sean when he was such a jerk to her. I also think she took way too long to set boundaries with him and really, what did she see in him??? Ugh, it just ticked me off how much of a doormat Darcy was when it came to Sean. I mean, she had some kick in her but not enough.
Let’s talk about the romance: Sean and Darcy had some interesting chemistry but it was somewhat tainted by Sean’s epic d-baggery and Darcy’s overwhelming insecurities. I think there was some real potential there but the focus was mainly their past issues instead of their present relationship.
Click It or Skip It? I so didn’t care for Sean’s attitude or Darcy’s weak personality so Not in My Wildest Dreams was a big miss for me. However, Jamie Hollins is clearly a talented author so I would definitely be game to try another book of hers.
Not In My Wildest Dreams by Jamie Hollins is book number two in the McKenna series. This is Darcy Owens and Sean McKenna's story.
Darcy and Sean have known each other since they were ten years old. Darcy is in the process of starting her own interior design business and Sean has partnered with a man that he has worked for and respects. Since they are busy on their careers Darcy and Sean have not spent much time together. This all changes when Sean is working on a business changing project. Sean asks Darcy to be the interior designer on this project.
Darcy has been in love with Sean all these years that they have been friends. Lets just say that Sean is clueless and needs to be more observant. I enjoyed their story but wanted to smart some sense into them especially Sean.
The reader gets to hear Darcy and Sean's side of the story but I wish that they had communicated more with each other. Will they take time to communicate and take a change on true love?
FYI, includes mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Deliciously sexy! Loved their chemistry. Didn't want the book to end.
This book has taught me a very important lesson; Don’t judge a book by its cover. Just because it has a rather spectacular set of abs featuring, it doesn’t mean that the contents will be just as enticing. You think I would have learnt this by now, sadly…abs are my weakness and I have been shamelessly exploited. I’m exaggerating slightly, every now and then I decide I’ll try something outside my comfort zone and attracted by the deliciousness of the cover, I decided this would be my book to try. Sadly on this occasion I quickly scurried back in my zone before I expired of boredom.
As you can tell, I kinda didn’t like this book. I didn’t hate it, it didn’t offend me, but everytime I picked it up to read I felt like I was slogging through it, rather than reading and enjoying it. It just didn’t capture my attention, even writing this review I am struggling to remember exactly what happened, who the characters were and why I didn’t like it. Sadly, I just get a vague buzz of disappointment when I think of Not in my Wildest Dreams rather than any details.
It’s safe to say that I won’t be reading any more of this series and I would have to give serious thought to whether I read any more books by the author. However, it does look very pretty in my kindle.
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and Not in My Wildest Dreams does it really well. Darcy is a 28 year old interior decorator who has been in love with her friend Sean McKenna for as long as she can remember. But, he doesn't see her like that at all. In fact, they have been drifting apart for awhile and it takes Sean asking Darcy to help him come up with a proposal for his construction company to pitch a job, to help their friendship get back on more solid terms. Only, their friendship morphs into something much more than friendship and no one could be happier about it than Darcy.
Darcy and Sean are so real together, so sweet, and sexy too, and their banter is funny and witty! Sean is a regular guy (no billionaires here!) and acts and reacts like a normal guy, meaning, he is pretty clueless emotionally, so at times hurt Darcy needlessly and unintentionally. Darcy too is very real, she's strong and independent and a fighter, especially given her past. But, she has the same insecurities that all women have, about not being enough for her partner, comparing herself to his exes, etc. It takes Sean some time to realize exactly how he feels about Darcy, and it takes her practically hitting him over the head with it before he does come to the realization, as he was never comfortable sharing his feelings or even thinking about them. I was proud of Darcy for standing up for herself and demanding what she deserved: someone's entire love, their attention, not just some temporary, indefinite relationship that has no real meaning or permanence. Thank God Sean came to his senses, because I was worried for a minute there!
Review by Amber for Love Romance Books Blog
Darcy has been in love with Sean McKenna since she was 10. Sean , on the other hand, is clueless about it and has only considered Darcy one of his best friends for the last 18 years. Sean is now a general contractor, and he needs Darcy's interior design skills for a big project. It is their first time working together professionally, and they get to see another side of each other.
Working together makes Sean look at Darcy in a whole new way. She is no longer that little girl anymore, and Sean really isn't sure how he feels about it. As for Darcy, she isn't sure how she will end up spending so much time working with Sean without spilling her secret.
This is the second book in the McKenna series, but it definitely can be a standalone. I did not read the first book, and although I would like to read it, I didn't feel confused at all starting with this book instead of the first. I thought that the characters and the story were great. I liked the chemistry between Sean and Darcy. I would give this book four stars.
I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:
Holy Hell!! Darcy Owens is a woman after my own curse word laden heart!!
Since she was ten years old, Darcy Owens has been in love with her best friend, Sean McKenna. For a decade, Darcy has sat aside and watched as Sean has dated his way through the greater Boston area without ever stopping to look and see the woman right in front of him. Knowing Sean is dense beyond belief, Darcy has satisfied herself with simply being his foul-mouthed, hilariously blunt, always there when he needs her, friend. Yeah, it sucks being friend zoned.
Sean McKenna is the consummate good time guy. If there’s a party to be found, a beer to be drunk, or a woman to be hit on, Sean is there. While he may play harder than most, Sean also works hard. Sean has dedicated his life to building his contracting company and making it nothing short of a roaring success. He works with a partner (who is also a mentor) and between the two of them, they are ready to tackle a huge, reputation making project. If Sean, his partner, and the company are going to pull this off, they’re going to need an interior designer and Sean just happens to know one.
When Sean brings Darcy into the hotel project he finally begins to see her as something more than his forever friend. Trouble is, he still isn’t quite seeing her as a woman, but as a girl who has some really cool skills he needs to get a job done well. It isn’t until another man on the project starts sniffing around Darcy that Sean finally opens his eyes and gets a mind-blowing look at the woman before him. What he sees scares the holy hell out of him and he must make Darcy his. All he must do is overcome several problems including: 1) Darcy’s emotion-laden speech laying out her precise feelings for him, 2) her not telling him about being a card-carrying member of the virginity club, 3) the whole “what if we wreck our friendship” problem, and 4) Sean getting the hell over himself, being a man, and owning up to his feelings for Darcy. Should be simple!
The Bottom Line: Darcy makes her big, bold, sassy presence known in The Best Part of Me and just rolls on in bigger, bolder, and sassier in Not in My Wildest Dreams. Since they were ten years old, Darcy and Sean have been perfectly paired. They have always been there for one another, always supported one another, but never crossed the line from friends to lovers. Darcy doesn’t push the issue until she is forced to and Sean is just too dense to see what’s right in front of him. Though the struggles these two go through aren’t pretty they sure do strengthen and solidify Darcy and Sean as a couple. In fact, I think as the series moves forward, these two are going to become the center of the group and I am all kinds of excellent with that scenario. Onward and upward, Jamie Hollins. I’m ready for the next book in the McKenna series.
I got me so funny moment of embarrassed shame from one Darcy Owens. She was shameless, fun, serious, and real. She knew her heart and knew what she wanted but she didn’t dare to dream it would ever be possible. Sean McKenna was a dream that was beyond a dream. It could never, ever, ever happen. That was until it did. But by them she had already steered her interest in a different direction. To say this was a surprise that Sean did not like this.
Sean and Darcy were friends for years. Darcy has seen women come and go in Sean’s life. She was just a fixture that was there. Sean was just a typical guy that saw only what he wanted to see until the day he saw more than he thought he could handle.
This was a slow rise to the friends-to-lovers relationship that I usually find. There was no looking that just said jump now. Right now. They worked together and spent more time together and things just felt right.
I did not read the first book of the series and I did not feel like I missed anything. I did however feel like I would like to know more about the McKenna’s as a whole. That would push me to go back and read book one of this series. It was something about Ewan that had me wanting to know what it was like for him and Quinn.

M/F Romance
Triggers: Child abuse
Sean is your typical clueless guy. He is constantly surrounded by beautiful women, but they all lack a key feature – depth. He loves his group of friends and his brother, Ewan. In fact, he's very happy when Quinn joins the group, but it makes his life seem even less fulfilled.
Darcy is amazing. She's funny, feisty, brash, smart, and gifted. She has been in love with Sean forever and despite those feelings, they've been able to have a great friendship. But when she grows closer to Quinn, she wants what Ewan and Quinn have. She's tired of having someone not invested in her. With a past like hers, she has hidden scars that run deep.
Sean and Darcy set out to work on a great project together – Sean using his skills and Darcy hers. When their relationship becomes more than a friendship, Sean has a difficult time navigating these uncharted waters. Essentially, he's a mess and ends up hurting Darcy needlessly. My heart really went out to her because she was trying to give him an out. I can understand the whole thing from her perspective.
This was a great story with a complex relationship that developed very organically. I can't wait to see what comes next!

4.5 stars of wild dreams
This is the second in the series, and although it features a different couple, it does follow on directly from the first book – which is also an excellent read – so I recommend that you read them in order.
We met Darcy in The Best Part of Me, and she and Quinn are now living together in Providence whilst they finish their studies and set up their respective businesses. Ewan is still in Ballagh running the pub, and meeting with Quinn whenever they have time. Darcy's long time best friend is Sean, Ewan's cousin. She has been in love with him since he defended her on her first day at his school, aged 10, but he has never seen her as anything other than a friend.
But now Sean's business has a chance at a new hotel project and needs an interior designer, and he just knows that Darcy is the person for the role. She is perfect for the job and impresses everyone with her skills, and makes Sean see her in a completely new light. Told from both points of view, we get to witness his confusion at the feelings he has, as she is paid attention by other men. As things heat up, can they both be at the same place emotionally as well as physically, or not, and if not where will it leave their friendship? Read on and find out.
I really enjoyed the hotel business elements too, and the English connection. We also got to see how Quinn and Ewan's relationship is developing, and more of the McKenna clan. Megan, Sean's 'perfect' sister, makes a couple of appearances too.
Very enjoyable read, and a hint as to what might be coming next – I am looking forward to reading that too. Thank you, Ms. Hollins.

This second story is a much more mature and polished addition to the McKenna series. Sean is a contractor running a growing construction business and Darcy, his childhood friend, is the interior designer on his most recent project. This time round, both leads are definitely adults and much of the action focuses on their professional lives.
Darcy is a complicated character. I’m not sure she’s entirely the same character we met in book one, but I love the confident small business owner much more than the brash and gossipy version of the same character in the first book. Beneath her beautiful shoes and fabulous wardrobe, Darcy hides a dark history and low self-confidence. She feels real and relevant. I absolutely love her.
Sean is also more serious than he seemed in the first book. He is an ambitious career man trying to build his business without losing sight of himself and his priorities. He values Darcy’s friendship, but working with her, he finds himself noticing her as a woman for the first time. Sean struggles with a playboy reputation and a lack of sensitivity, but he is completely loveable.
These two are perfect together. They are playful and silly together and this is a true friends-to-lover story. The conflict feels real and the connection between them is special. I much preferred this story to the first one. While familiar characters reappear here, this has none of the new adult feel that I struggled with in book one. The female relationships that annoyed me first time round are missing here and instead, we see a more mature and supportive relationship between Darcy and Quinn.
I really enjoyed this story and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Darcy Owens had a horrible childhood, until she came to live with her grandmother at the age of 10. On the first day of school she meets Sean McKenna. And for Darcy, it was love at first sight. For Sean, it was just another friend. Forward 20 years into the future and Darcy is one of Sean's closest friends. But she has loved him from day one and still does.
Sean McKenna has the ultimate manwhore vibe going. He sleeps around and doesn't care who knows or sees. He is bold, self-assured in his job, and confident. But when it comes to his personal life, he is scared to death of screwing it up and making someone else unhappy.
When Darcy finally spills the beans and tells Sean she loves him, he is speechless, can't understand what she is saying, and it takes him a few days to process it. She tries to tell him she didn't mean it and they end up doing the deed. She gets mad thinking he regrets it, but he doesn't know how he feels.
Can Sean and Darcy figure out what they want? Will they end up hurting each other in the process? This story is funny at times and it will even break your heart sometimes. I loved Darcy, she was a spit-fire and didn't take shit from anyone. But Sean was a different kind of hero, being unsure some of the time made me love him even more.
This is the second book for me from this author and I am loving this series. I can't wait for Sean's sister, Megan's story, Where I Need to Be, due to release late spring 2017.
Book given for an honest review on Netgalley.
I missed these Mckenna men and was ready for this new story to come.
We already met the characters in book 1 of the series and we loved them, Darcy was as perfect as I imagined. She had this tough exterior but in reality she was just a girl in love with a boy from as long as she could remember.
Sean was something different altogether, I loved him in the first book, but during this story I learned that he was actually a coward and an insensitive boy.
The story had it's super cute moments and Sean had his good moments too, when he was actually good for Darcy and took into account what she needed or how she felt. But most of the time he was just thinking about himself, what he wanted, how he felt, even when it was Darcy's story, he still made that about him.
Don't get me wrong the story was good, her love was so pure, but she was missing out in life because of him, and he didn't even notice her for most of their lives. And when he finally saw her, he didn't really appreciate her, he took her for granted.
The lesson learned from the story in my opinion was that sometimes you don't see a good thing until it's gone. He knew he had her and he never really looked at her, or asked her how she felt, he just felt good by having her there. But we all know that relationships take work, and you need to be there for that person, listen to them and help them, because if you don't then you will wake up one day and they could be gone.
Being loved by someone is a privilege, and Sean learned to appreciate that and be there for Darcy. He was scared and played safe, but ultimately realised that if you don't risk it you can never win, and he needed to win her back if he wanted to be happy.
Even tough he was kind of an deuce most of the book, I still enjoyed the story, the sex scenes were amazing, and Darcy's innocence and thrive for life made everything so much better. She loved him with all of her heart and if a way that made us love him too.
Quinn was Darcy’s roommate.they were having their monthly girls night with Mallory and Jesse. Quinn was with Evan and had been for the last year. Then Evan and Sean came in - they were cousins. Sean and Darcy were best friends but Darcy had been crushing on Sean for years since her first day of school in Ballagh. Darcy had seen all of Sean’s tricks and moves but only from the sidelines. Sean was the reason Darcy was still a virgin at twenty eight years old as no man seemed to match up to Sean. Darcy had just finished her graduate degree. Sean was a partner in a general construction firm for some reason Darcy looked different to Sean when he seen her. Darcy had started a design firm but so far she had only had two small jobs. Then Sean told her that his company was bidding on a project that needed an interior designer and he wanted to offer her the job. On her way to Boston Darcy stopped to see her grandmother and her best friend Mary Mcphee or Phee who shared a home Darcy had taken a bus to her grandmother's when she was ten. When Darcy was ten she seen a kid being bullied stuck for the boy being bullied so the bully started on her then Sean stepped in and defused everything by his humor and wit. He had been Darcy’s rescuer and that had started everything. Darcy’s parents had dragged her out at the age of three to sing for tips. Darcy swore she would never sing in public again. Darcy’s parent would rather spend what money they had on getting high rather than feed their daughter. Darcy was excited about the project Sean had told her about. Darcy had two in a half weeks to come up with the interior design for the project. Sean loved to make Darcy smile that big true smile she had. Sean ended taking Darcy’s virginity but wasn’t very happy she hadn’t told him she was a virgin. Darcy thought she had done something wrong and Sean hadn’t enjoyed having sex with her.
I really enjoyed this story it was predictable yet it didn’t take away from the story. I liked how Sean thought of Darcy for the project for his company. He had faith in her. This was a very enjoyable read with a good plot. I felt bad how Sean was so busy when his partner took a vacation that he didn’t seem to have time for Darcy and she felt he was taking her for granted. I thought it was sweet that Darcy thought Sean didn’t enjoy being with her sexually when actually he was overly excited and didn’t last long. I also loved how he acted so jealous but didn’t realize what he was feeling. All all a good story , loved the characters and the ins and out of this story and I recommend.
This book had a really cute premise of girl meets boy at 10 and falls in love with him because he took up for her on a playground and she's been in love with him for 18 years. Boy is just clueless...how often are men just clueless? All the time!! Sean is a magnificent hero. He's just effortless and he genuinely loves Darcy but he's so unsure of himself that he can't be sure of anyone else. This story had me at hello...no it had me at 5 percent.
Darcy is a smart aleck, she's sarcastic and snotty sometimes and that's okay because Sean likes her that way. He's the same way. I love the part where they're celebrating and she tells the waitress
"Excuse me but could you get your t*ts out of my drink?"
How many times have we been out and wanted to say something like this but thought "Nah, I'll sensor myself.." Darcy doesn't sensor. I don't really think she knows the meaning of the word.
My all-time favorite is where they're out to dinner with friends, they run into Lisbeth who's an Ex of Sean's. From the the description you get she's just a mean character and promiscuous to boot. Lisbeth says to Sean:
"You think about me in the mornings?"
Darcy wanted to vomit. "He can't help but think about you every morning. He's been living in fear that his night of poor judgement in high school will come back to haunt him. Lisbeth and herpes are synonymous, after all."
"Darcy! What the hell!" Lisbeth slapped Darcy on the shoulder before turning around to look at her date, "I don't have herpes."
Darcy is no push over except with Sean. She doubts herself with him and she's not a strong person when she's with him. I think EVERY woman can relate to Darcy. We all have our doubts but especially when we're around someone we love like Darc loves Sean. Sean on the other hand is always used to being second fiddle to his sister Megan and he doesn't know how to be first in Darcy's world. Sex he can do, unattachments he can do but he can't do love until she yells it at him.
This was an absolute gem of a book and I would recommend it to everyone. My one tiny pet peeve....the sex and language. I really wish they had like a clean version and a spicy version because they would make lots of money on books if they did that!! I'm not joking. So many times my friends are saying, I would love to read the books you review but they had too much sex and language and they're right. I know that in today's society that's okay but man would authors make a lot if they had 2 versions. So, if you don't mind skipping over the sex and ignoring the cussing then buy the book!!! It's definitely worth the hours it took to read!
I was given a copy of this ARC from the publisher on Netgalley for a honest review. All of the above comments are my express opinions and no one else's.
I found this story very slow and boring. I couldn't really connect with the characters. I found myself skipping through it to see if it picked up but it didn't.
What a story!! I had a few years of frustration for Sean and Darcy. It was a tough thing for Darcy to watch Sean with other women while he considers her his best friend. Darcy has romantic love for Sean forever. It's a journey.
4.5 Stars Rounded Up
This was a seriously fantastic best friends to lovers story! There is a fair amount of build up, but that really set the tone and helped me fall for the characters. I was sold by the Dirty Dozen game in the opening scene.
One thing that I really appreciate in a romance is when the issues they face feel genuine and are things real people experiences fairly regularly. This definitely had that. Darcy with her insecurities and jumping to conclusions, Sean with his inability to communicate his emotions and his underestimating the situations... Definitely things men and women deal with.
The voices here were also distinctly male and female, and without having to be too "cute" or crude.
And though this has a virgin subplot, it wasn't ridiculously over the top or "flowery." In fact, I loved how her deflowering was pretty realistic, even a bit disappointing (and the misunderstanding that stemmed from that on each side were perfect).
The supporting characters were also a joy and I now need to go back and read Ewan's book! I also hope that Sean's sister Megan gets a book since she obviously (but not TOO obviously) has a story to tell! (ETA: Looks like her story IS the next one. :) )
I really and thoroughly enjoyed this!
Not in My Wildest Dreams just rocked!! This story is about Sean and Darcy. You remember them from book one in the Mckenna series. Sean is Ewan's cousin, and Darcy is Qunn's best friend/roommate. In the first book, you know that these two had something from the start. They have known each other since they were kids. I liked that this story brings the characters back together. Jamie Hollins has made this book fun, flirty, sexy, and gives it the right amount of drama.
Darcy had a rough start from when she was a child. She holds near and dear a dark secret from her past. Sean has always been the "clown" of the family. Always cracking the jokes, and always trying to lighten the mood. He can have the crowd laughing. Now is the time he needs to be an adult. He has made partner within the company he interned for, and has his Masters Degree. He has always been so consumed with the goings and comings that he never realized what he has in Darcy was always more than friendship.
This story about two people trying to figure their life together and has you full of hope as a reader. Sean and Darcy can be bullheaded, clueless, and sometimes inconsiderate of each other. But they love fiercely. This book can be read as a stand alone, but if you read the first book, you will have a better background knowledge of the characters within the story. The McKenna men will rock your world and take your breath away! This was a great story and I can not wait for the next book with James and Megan's story.. I am so curious where their story will take us! I give this story a 4.5 star rating!
Darcy has been in love with Sean since she was a little girl. She got very good at hiding it, at least she thought so. Seems like everyone knew how she felt except one person, Sean. She loves him so much that she has been saving herself for him. When he asks her to work on a project with him she hopes that now things might change. But until another coworker starts to hit on her, he pays no attention. Then one night everything changes.
