This book is for individuals suffering from unwanted intrusive thoughts. The language is plain, and it is readable by anyone. It could also help in case of anxiety disorders. not something to be taken lightly, since it could make your life a wreck.
The authors describe in detail the effects that anxiety has on our bodies and our minds. It is really very interesting and full of practical tips.
The introduction to ‘Overcoming Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts,’ won me over in the Introduction with a phrase I often use myself, ‘Remember that knowledge is power.’ To understand something is to take away a little of the uncertainty, the fear that not knowing brings.
I began to read this book initially with my son in mind. He has Asperger’s Syndrome and unwanted and intrusive thoughts are a feature of his high anxiety when it is at its peak. I wanted to be able to help him. As I began to read though this book spoke also to something in me and I realised that unwanted and intrusive thoughts aren’t necessarily thoughts that are violent or abusive by nature, but thoughts, particularly when they become recurrent, that cause unnecessary upset and which on causing upset, thoughts that you would rather avoid for the very reason that they do cause upset. It’s a fact that almost everyone has unwanted and intrusive thoughts, but it’s what you do with them that makes them a problem or not.
This book is full of wisdom and particularly useful are the little nougats entitle ‘Helpful Facts’ in the boxes. I consider this book a must-read for anyone who is concerned about unwanted and intrusive thoughts and give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I found this to be a very interesting read. While not exactly what I thought it would be, it did offer some insight.
As someone who has struggled with OCD and intrusive thoughts almost all my life, I found this to be a refreshing change from so many of the other books I have read. Easy to read and understand, this book has definitely helped me cope and I've started to change my behavior and the intrusive thoughts have diminished.
Excellent, enlightening, empowering, free yourself from undesirable thoughts!
I've been pleasantly surprised with this book, beginning to know that almost everyone experimetamos intrusive thoughts that can come to bother us and the reasons that we have them. The book contains a section detailing all kinds of intrusive thoughts and the way we engage them because the idea is meaningful to us. It has been very helpful to know and understand the ways in which we can turn these thoughts into disturbing recurrent thoughts that affect our lives and take over our minds, so that we have tools to get rid of this problem with personal work.
I have lived sporadic situations of intense anxiety due to disturbing thoughts and I can not imagine how difficult it must be for people suffering from a more chronic condition, living with intense worry and anxiety, with fear and feeling threatened by their own thoughts. The good news is that this issue contains self-help strategies to transform this condition, regain balance and reclaim control of your mind, significantly improving the quality of your life.
I recommend this book to everyone, since our brains are wired to experience this situation, no matter how intense or how often it is, this book contains very useful information to better understand the functioning of our mind and therefore is information which empowers anyone. Self-knowledge is a key element for achievement, success, healthy and joyful relationships, sustained balance and happiness, and a more coherent life.
My gratitude to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book
What attracted me to this book was that it is a CBT based guide. It defines the different voices that one can have playing in one’s head: Worried, False Comfort and Wise Mind thoughts. Knowing how to identify each thought provides relief.
The writers provide a number of exercises to illustrate their points. These help the reader identify strategies to prevent intrusive thoughts from overpowering you. Also, there are helpful facts provided that help readers hone in on the points the writers wish to emphasize.
Rating: 4/5
Favourite quote: “Most of your distress is caused not by what you think or feel, but how you feel about and react to what you think or feel”
NetGalley provided this book in exchange for an honest review.
* Great examples trickled throughout the advice and research to really hammer home the point.
* Information is outlined and organized well.
* Jargon isn't too complicated.
* Could help shift your perspective toward yourself.
* Highly recommend to anyone with anxiety or similar disorders!
Very good ideas in this book to help with Intrusive thoughts. However most are things i already know, already read and researched. i didnt feel there was any new information here as it is mainly a rehash of other authors and medical experts. Good if this is the first book you have read on the topic and never researched it.
Understanding intrusive thoughts and that you're not alone in thinking them, make this an eye opening book. These thoughts can often be horrifying or disturbing and make you feel awful for even thinking them. Realising that it's very common and doesn't in fact make you a bad person or likely to act on them make this an important book to read. With examples of these types of thoughts, this book gives techniques on how to move past them or better cope with them without feeling fear, guilt or shame. I really liked how well the "Why" and "How" of these thoughts are explained. Recommended.
