loved this unique story from the perspectives of people associated with the ICU. Frank's character was interesting and offered a scary insight into locked-in syndrome, and the desperate need to communicate in order to save someone's life. great story!
Cassie is hit by a car while walking her dog and left for dead. She is found lying in a ditch and taken to St Catherine hospital where she remains in a coma. During the initial assessment of her injuries staff discover she is pregnant. Although family appear excited at the news it isn’t long before cracks start to emerge in the picture of happy families. Soon you will be adding up how many people have betrayed Cassie’s trust.
Frank is a patient locked inside his body and is located close to Cassie’s bed. He discovers something vital to her case but lacks the ability to pass it on. He will face one of his worst fears when someone discovers how much of a threat he really is.
Alice loves children but is unable to carry a baby full term. She is a nurse in a high dependency ward at St Catherine’s hospital where Cassie and Frank are both patients. She has always believed that Frank will improve and makes a point of talking to him each day. Is she really as genuine as she seems?
Jack is a loving and attentive husband to Cassie and Charlotte is his mother. Secrets and motives are gradually revealed which shatter that idea.
Each chapter is narrated by one of the main characters and bit by bit their backgrounds and relationships are revealed.
I loved the atmosphere created in the opening paragraphs of the prologue. The author had a fantastic knack of making characters seem like real people and the book was never going to be just a story for me. It was a surprise to learn this was the author’s first novel after completing a novel writing course in 2014. I have to confess I am excited at the thought of reading more of her books.
This story kept me guessing and at times, unsure in which direction it would go. I would get an idea or suspect someone then discount it. The ending was a total surprise although I could understand how and/or why it would happen.
I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/crime/thrillers or anyone who just wants to be trapped in a great book by a new author.
locked in' and totally paralysed but fully cognisant, Cassie another patient in the same ward in a coma, and Alice, a nurse who looks after both patients diligently. Essentially a mystery story, the reader becomes engaged with all three characters wanting to know their stories. Eventually all 3 are linked together with Cassie's story but in different ways. The narrative moves along well but the culprit is too easy to discern despite the various red herrings. Given this is marketed as a psychological thriller, the ending is ridiculously sickly sweet. But if you want a light read that doesn't bear much scrutiny, I'm sure many readers will enjoy it.
