I was satisfied to learn a new technique of leather burning........ such a cute art......
This is not a big book, but what it lacks in pages it does not lose in information. This book is very easy to follow and gives some lovely project to start with. I have not done any leather work previously but I found the instructions very easy to understand. There is a little cost in set up but the results are well worth the effort. The photographs are a fabulous way to follow if you are a visual person, but the written explanation is really great as well. A good book for a beginner or experienced alike
Who besides cowboys think that leather art can be beautiful? Most of us associate it with souvenir wallets and dog collars.
Burnt leather drawing is a lot like pen and ink drawing, and in "The Art of Leather Burning" Lora Irish instructs you, as a skilled artist, in how to realize beautiful effects on leather using extreme heat. Starting with how to choose tools, Ms Irish then proceeds to show how to draw and perhaps color various styles of artistic designs.
This book seems to be comprehensive, with good photos of tools and close-ups of artistic techniques. I think it would be very useful for someone who is already skilled at sketching, and who wants to begin working in leather.
I am quite put off by the excessive number of fonts and visual design elements used in the text. There also seems to be an unusually large number of typos and composition flaws in this ARC.
I received a review copy of "The Art of Leather Burning: Step-by-Step Pyrography Techniques" by Lora S. Irish (Dover) though NetGalley.com.
The Art of Leather Burning Step-by-Step Pyrography Techniques by Lora Susan Irish is a wonderful craft book I am going to try out asap! I like to wood burn but I want to expand to different fields and this looks so fun! This book gives so much info on not just burning but the types of leather, tips, projects and more. Everything to get someone like me, a newbie, started on a new fun hobby! These would make presents for birthdays and Christmas too! Great book, thanks NetGalley for letting me read this, can't wait to try this out! The projects in here are so beautiful! All with pictures and easy step by step instructions. Awesome!
This is a very practical book and easy to follow. It covers everything from types of pyrography tools, adjustable settings and other materials to leather work and all the practical details that go into working with leather, types and methods for burning designs.
I couldn't resist looking ahead to the designs provided in the back, but in doing so I discovered a real strength of the book. It doesn't just show you how to trace lines, but goes into detail about how to achieve shaded effects that make a project look really professional.
The segment on working with leather sticks to basics and there are recommendations for more detailed books on that aspect of the craft. This book is about the decorating process and it really delivers. It suggests practice grids to get to know the different patterns and how different tips and temperatures affect the outcome and also covers different types of dyes and other colorings that a crafter might want to use after getting the burned design onto the leather.
Overall an excellent book that does what it says on the cover and does it well and in great detail.
Work the leather is a freaking art, and this book show How awesome and tricky can be. Recommended if you wish start doing it
Dover craft books are typically well-photographed with pleasing layouts. But this has to be one of the most comprehensive and detailed offerings they've released in a while. Almost everything one might want to know about leather burning tools and techniques is included. It's not a hobby we'll be picking up soon. However, some of the information is beneficial for crafts enthusiasts in general (the use of tools and materials). The projects in the book are described on the cover as "easy." However, for a novice, they might not be a piece of cake. Additionally, the author's proficiency in drawing is remarkable. Her designs are stunning--but some might have difficulty in reproducing them. Nevertheless, five stars..
I thought this was brilliant. I was expecting lots of patterns and maybe a few ideas but you get so much more. It starts off with which tools are the best for different projects, gives you starter projects and even tells you how to make the leather bags before you decorate them.
Easy to read, hard terminology is explained and a great index for everything. The pictures are also very clear and easy to see what the writer is explaining.
