Witty and charming whodunit with some very interesting characters. Keeps you guessing until the end. There are a few twists and turns and an occasional bump in the road as the clues unfold to find out who done it. Good read.

Southern Spirits is the first in a paranormal cozy series, Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. When down on her luck, main character Verity Long, accidentally dumps ashes in her yard she traps a ghost in her yard she starts seeing ghosts and gets stuck with a quirky ghost as a side kick. Verity uses her newfound ability to help her ex boyfriend's brother clear the ghosts out of a historic property. Sparks fly and we see the potential for romance and also disaster. I like Verity as a character and I love her pet skunk. This is a fun series and I look forward to reading more books in the series.

Verity was a modern woman. Verity had also found out her fiance was a cheating butt and left him at the altar. But Verity’s witch of a would have been mother in law demanded Verity pay for all the wedding that hadn’t actually happened. Now Verity was in the position of losing her home that her grandmother had left her. Verity is also trying to keep her good name but her ex’s family is from the upper crust of the t town so that may not be what happens no matter what. Verity;s fiance is also suing her. So to say the least Verity is having a rough time. Verity had been a graphic designer with a thriving business until recently and no one would hire her. Ellis is a cop and Verity’s ex fiance's brother was doing a project on a house but there was ghost there and he hired Verity help him with that problem. The name of one of the ghost was Frankie he had been a gangster during prohibition. Frankie wanted to help Verity and was a nice guy even if he had lived a criminal lifestyle. Ellis realizes as time went on that Verity wasn’t a bad person and gold digger she had been the one cheated on. Verity learned Ellis wasn’t like she thought he would be.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun mystery to read. I loved Frankie and how he wanted to help Verity. I thought it was funny that Verity had a pet skunk named Lucy made me laugh. This had a good plot and fast pace. I didn’t particularly care for Ellis at first but he did only know what he had been told about Verity it does surprise me that he hired Verity. I liked Ellis changed and allowed himself to know the real Verity. I did chuckle at times while reading this. This kept my attention all through the book until the end. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I recommend.

I’m so glad I took a chance on this one. This book does not fall within the lines of what I typically read but I enjoyed it all the same. When I saw “Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery” I knew I had to give it a shot.

Great characters, great descriptive story with humor and mystery and even a little romance. Verity and Ellis were a great leading duo but the secondary characters were perhaps just as fun to read...even though some were ghosts.

This is a series that I can definitely see myself working my way through.

ARC received from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I enjoyed the story. I think the concept was different from many ghost stories that are circulating now. I enjoyed the mystery. It kept things surprising and helped with moving the story along.

“Southern Spirits” is the perfect cozy mystery for a rainy winter’s day. There is plenty of humor, a pet skunk, and southern charm, along with the beginning of what promises to be a steamy romance. Don’t be fooled, though, as there were some legitimate scares to be found. A really fun adult mystery read!

Funny enjoyable southern spirits left me desperate to read more, I loved reading this Angie fox book and on finishing I immediately downloaded the next books in the series to find out what would happen between Verity and Ellis next.

Be prepared for laughs galore with this enjoyable read 5 stars.

I don’t read too many cozies but when I read the blurb it I was charmed.
Verity Long finds out that ghosts are real after she mistakenly mixes the ashes of the ghost that lives in her jar. Of course seeing as how her life is already going bad why shouldn’t she make some money out of it, even if the person paying her to get rid of a troublesome ghost is her slimy ex’s good looking brother.
What I enjoyed about Verity is that she’s the sort of character that is good, and is written in a way that shows you she is good without rubbing it in your face. Also anyone who can have a sense of humor when they’re the town’s official pariah, deserves a pat on the back.
The writing was engaging and pulled me into the story because the characters were interesting and fun. There is a mystery, but for me that wasn’t really the focus of the book. If it were I would be more annoyed about not seeing it coming, or wondering if it was just something out of left field. As it stands it was a nice twist, and if I can have a smooth talking ghost gangster side kick you won’t hear any complaints from me.
If you like light, quick or cozy mysteries, give this a read. Also, I thought the cover was cute. I feel so shallow. Now I just need to get my hands on the rest of this authors work.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Southern Spirits has everything I could ask for in a book - ghosts, mystery, scandal, a hunky man, a sassy heroine, and a cute skunk (yes, really). The mixture of Southern charm and attitude, and tongue-in-cheek humour is a very successful combination. Verity is strong and quirky, yet vulnerable, and immensley likeable, Ellis is more the strong and silent type, and the author paves the way for their relationship to develop in future books in the series. Frank, bless him, is a really nice ghost despite his past.

All in all, the premise is a sound one, and the author's world building is consistent and well-thought-out.

I think Ms Fox may very well be my new favourite author!

Southern Spirits, by Angie Fox, is the first book in the series Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries and is a fun cozy mystery. It's got ghosts, a good looking policeman related to her ex-fiancee and a mystery to solve so Verity can keep her family home.
Verity is a Southern belle who almost married the youngest philandering son of the Wydell family, the leading family in the small town of Sugarland, Tennessee. She left him standing at the altar, and her almost ex-mother-in-law made her pay for the wedding. She's left out of work with her empty plantation house, her pet skunk, and an ugly vase, which turns out to contain the ashes of a long-dead gangster.
This was an enjoyable read and and a great way to spend an afternoon. I am currently reading the other books in the series!

It's great to finally read book 1 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. I loved books 2 and 3 and this was finally adding the icing on the cake by picking up on all the little things I'd missed. I adore Verity and Ellis and to see how their romance started was great. Verity discovers she can talk to ghosts when she is packing up her belongs because she has to sell the family home. (part of story). She and Frankie (the ghost) set out to dig up a fortune he thinks is buried so she can save the house. They end up helping Ellis get rid of a poltergeist and finding the rest of Frankies 1920's band. Great cozy read and the rest of the series is wonderful.

Super cute mystery. Southern Spirits combines Southern grit and charm to create a roaring great time, Angie Fox combines humor, mystery and a touch of romance to make a quick, edge-of-your-seat ride. Once I started this book I put it down for three reasons: Lunch, dinner, sleep. I had no idea how this was going to turn out, who did what to cause the angry spirit. I'll definitely be reading more of this author.

like Angie Fox. like the humor in her stories as well as the conflict. What are the odds of falling for two guys in the same family and having it turn out so cockeyed. Help the spirits help yourself!

For fans of cozy mysteries and paranormal books, this is a great, quick, and fun read. Verity Long has been having a run of bad luck... only to made slightly worse by getting stuck with a supernatural sidekick. With her new ability to see ghosts, she finds herself stuck in the middle of a mystery of strange happenings at her ex's brother's property.

The book moves at a great pace, with lots of action, mystery, and even a touch of humor to keep things entertaining. The characters (and especially ghosts) have a lot of personality and are quite memorable... each with their own stories and idiosyncrasies. There's even a little hint of romance to keep things even more fun.

If you're looking for a quick, fun read.... I definitely recommend this book. I think it would probably be a great book on audio to listen to while you're on a roadtrip. I'm interested in checking out the rest of the series to see how Verity's talents progress and if her "sidekick" manages to disentangle himself from the rosebushes.

Southern Spirits
Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery, Book #1
Angie Fox
5 Stars

Synopsis:

It leads to an offer she can’t refuse from the town’s bad boy, the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with.

Ellis Wyatt is in possession of a stunning historic property haunted by some of Sugarland Tennessee’s finest former citizens. Only some of them are growing restless—and destructive. He hires Verity put an end to the disturbances. But soon Verity learns there’s more to the mysterious estate than floating specters, secret passageways, and hidden rooms.

There’s a modern day mystery afoot, one that hinges on a decades-old murder. Verity isn't above questioning the living, or the dead. But can she discover the truth before the killer finds her? (Goodreads)

Review:

All Verity Long wants to do is save her grandmother’s house and not have it sold right under her nose. But she really has no idea where to find the amount of money she needs to do that. She thinks this is the most important problem she has to deal with. But when she inadvertently traps a ghost on her property, she realizes she is wrong. Seeing ghosts and talking with them is an even bigger problem.

This book is such a fun read and I really loved it. The characters are well developed and well rounded. Verity and Frankie have a very interesting relationship. They are both learning how to deal with the ghost/human interactions and both of them make mistakes along the way. The bickering and bantering between the two is very funny and had me laughing out loud at times.

Paranormal ghost cozies are one of my favorite genres to read and this one is as good as any that I have read. I like the fact that not all of the ghosts that Verity encounter are friendly ghosts, some are quite mean. This made the ghostly encounters seem more realistic to me.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy. If you enjoy paranormal ghost cozies, then this book is a must read. I am looking forward to spending more time with Verity and Frankie.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Seasoning Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I have read a good chunk of Angie Fox’s Demon Slayer series and know that she is an author and voice that will always entertain, take you on a fun journey, and go in unexpected directions. When I saw the first book in her new series, Southern Spirits, on netgalley, I immediately requested a copy and dove right in. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

And, I honestly loved it! Once again, Ms. Fox has written a heroine who is funny, endearing, and relatable. I loved meeting Verity, Frankie the German (her ghost side kick), hottie hero-in-the-making Ellis, as well as the other secondary characters. I loved that Verity’s abilities and the ghostly world are entirely new to her and that her reactions were what most normal women’s reactions would be (hint: a mix of terror and compassion). I loved the mystery, the ending, and all the steps along the way.

I consider this book to be urban fantasy because the paranormal and mystery elements far outweigh the romance, though it does leave things open for romance in the future. In general, it is well written, funny, fast paced, and an awesome introduction to a new series. I can happily recommend it to others and look forward to returning to Sugarland, TN soon!
