I'm going to have to decline this title as I already read it many years ago. I was not aware that it was the same book as Abomination. Thank you for the opportunity, however. I remember it was an awesome book and don't mind giving it 5 stars!
I have read four other books from the Rock Harbor Collection, and a couple of other books in which Rock Harbor characters made cameo appearances. I really enjoyed returning to Rock Harbor in Haven of Swans, and following along with Bree and Kade as they assisted Bay City Police Captain Nick Andreakos in his search for a serial killer, a search that became very personal to each of them. Bree’s search dog, Samson, plays, as always, a very big role in apprehending the killer, but will he lead Bree there in time to stop him from killing again?
Fans of the television show “Criminal Minds” will be great fans of Haven of Swans as well. While I would classify most of the Rock Harbor books as mysteries, I would classify this one as a psychological thriller. Coble has included quite a few red herrings for her reader to sort out. Through most of the book I prided myself on identifying the killer, snickering at Coble’s attempts to lead me down another path, only to be quite humbled by his true identity.
I highly recommend this book to mystery, thriller, and romance fans. While Colleen Coble is a Christian writer, this book is not preachy, and will appeal to both Christian and secular audiences. This summer a new Rock Harbor book will be added to the collection, Beneath Copper Falls. I, along with other Coble fans, will anxiously be awaiting this next installment. I thank Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for providing me with this copy of Havens of Swans in exchange for my honest opinion. I received no monetary compensation for this review.
Heart stopping opening as a woman and her child are on the side of the road and scared but she is not sure of whom. She finds herself in Rock Harbor where Bree takes her in. You may remember Bree and Samson from the original Rock Harbor series.
Gideon is a creepy, crazy villain who has justified his need to kill, and kill again. I will not spoil any of it for you and will let you find out the rest of his craziness as you read the story.
Nick is a detective working a murder case. This one even more frightening when he realizes his wife and child are missing. Colleen creates complicated characters. Nick and his wife are divorcing because he was too dedicated to his job. He has always loved them and he is a wreck with them missing and presumed dead at the hands of a crazy serial killer.
Coble sprinkles in one surprise after another.
This is a very good mystery. My only complaint was that I could not like Eve. She was just too whiny and stupid. Very disappointed in her character.
Sex - kissing, Nick and Eve were married before
Violence - he is a serial killer, he mutilates the bodies,
Sadly, I have had to abandon my read of this book. I've read 11 of Colleen Coble's books so far, and I've thoroughly enjoyed them. Yes, they are not for the faint hearted. They include death & murder, and disturbing revelations. So far I have been able to appreciate the plot for what it is, and for the intricacy in combining mystery with romance, with a location to 'die for' (sorry for the pun!)
Haven of Swans begins at a level I have not even encountered before. I found it extremely dark and uncomfortable to read, and chose for my own sanity to put the book away. I do love Christian reads, but I think it borders on a story that goes to a place my spirit does not want to dwell. If this was a movie, I would not choose to watch it.
Thank you to Netgalley & Thomas Nelson for the digital ARC. This is my honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. When I read it under the title 'Abomination' in 2007. I am taking away a star, even though it deserves it as a book, because I seriously dislike this practice of publishers taking a book that was published years earlier and re-publishing it under a new title. It seems somehow unethical to me. Why not just simply re-publish the book under it's original title? It's very disconcerting to buy a book, as I have in the past, only to discover it's a book I've already read, just now out with a new title. I just don't approve of this. Abomination was a great book. Colleen Coble does a wonderful job with it. It would have stood on its own again under the same title.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher via Net Galley. My opinion is my own.
Disappointed to find that this is just a reprint of a book I read (and own) 10 years ago called Abomination.. Did not re-read, originally called the book creepy, but in a nice way :)
When I requested to review this book I did not realize that I had read it before because it was under a different title. The previous title was Abomination, book four in the Rock Harbor series. I still enjoyed reading it because it had been 10 years and I had forgotten much of the plot. I only remembered bits and pieces and did not even know the outcome.
A young woman and a small child is found on the side of the road by Bree Matthews. The woman has lost all of her memory. She doesn't even know her name. All she knows is that she is in danger. She does not know if it is an angry ex-husband or a stalker. All she knows is that someone is after her.
A killer is on the loose waiting for his next prey. This book is not for the faint of heart. I highly suspect that the author is a fan of Stephen King fiction. This story kept me engaged and I stayed up late. I grew weary so I finished it the first thing the next morning. The book under this new title is due to be released on May 2, 2.107. Thanks to Thomas Nelson and Netgalley for providing me an e-copy of this book to read and review.
This was previously published as Abomination but this version has a title and cover art that is more in line with the other books in the Rock Harbor series than the original release.
Like her other books in the series you don’t necessarily have to read them all in order and they would work well as standalones except for the parts about her personal life. Each book is essentially its own contained mystery. Colleen Coble writes excellent suspense thrillers that build with the right momentum.
This was a good story that will keep you guessing until the big reveal. I hope you have a strong stomach because Coble doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the gruesome details. There’s plenty of adventure to go along with the intriguing mysterious element along with the right bit of lightheartedness which you’ll need to get over the missing body parts.
Her characters are mostly well written, you’ll end up caring about the good ones and hoping the bad ones take a long walk off a short cliff. The only character issue I had was with her law enforcement, they didn’t feel entirely realistic nor how the crime was handled. It wasn’t terrible, it just felt a little lackadaisical. But her serial killer more than made up in the department of excellent and interesting characters.
Coble has long established herself in the Christian Fiction market as being a Queen of Romantic Suspense. This one is heavier on the suspense and light on the romance but all she’s done is proven she has a wider range of talent than previously shown.
