A rough start for the rookie Green Lantern duo of Simon and Jessica, but a good start nonetheless. Some of the art could be a bit better, though.
In the Rebirth Green Lanterns Vol. 1: Rage Planet, Sam Humphries pits Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz against the familiar Red Lanterns. The use of a threat we've seen before allows greater focus on the individual personalities of these new, young, earthbound Green Lanterns.
A solid trade that any fan of DC Comics can pick up and enjoy. Rebirth continues to be just that for DC and a breath of fresh air for the superhero genre.
Another great Rebirth series. Love that it's a team up of 2 completely different people trying to learn being heroes. Can't wait to read about Red dawn.
Hal Jordan the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 (Earth)
Legendary across the Universe for his bravery and exploits
is called away to deal with a threat on the Galactic scale.
He leaves the earth in the care of two rookie Lanterns.
Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.
These new partners are going to have to work
together as Green Lanterns
to fight of an invasion of Red Lanterns
and the Phantom Ring. An ancient Guardians experiment that
has horrible consequences for Earth.
Green Lantern continues to be DC's most consistent book, having weathered the various Rebirths/52s/Re-Rebirths.
The only issue with this trade, and many others like it, is that the stories, while consistent, are beginning to get a bit repetitive.
Holy crap! Green Lanterns. Yellow Lanterns. Red Lanterns. This is super cool!
I come into this review somewhat biased. I have never been a Green Lantern fan. Not Kyle Rayner, Not Guy Gardner, no not even Hal Jordan. Golden age Green Lantern was kind of cool in that lost Americana kind of way, but over all, the Lantern has always been sort of lame.
Now we have two Green Lanterns, both patrolling Earth. Because you know Earth is such a galactic bad ass. We have Superman, we have Batman, we have the freaking Justice League and yet we warrant two Green Lanterns?
Jessica Cruz (hispanic woman) and Simon Baz (middle eastern suspected terrorist) are the new Green Lanterns of Earth and they don't play well together. Okay one Lantern, I get making him or her a minority to appeal to the politically dumbass....sorry...politically correct crowd of readers who really don't buy comics anyway. But two of them? And have them face off against the Red Lanterns...Sorry but no.
As bad as this may sound. This book is not bad and it lays the groundwork for an array of strong possibilities. Jessica and Simon are characters that on their own are worthy of their own books. They bring depth to their character and in the hands of even better than average writers, they are capable of being two fresh voices in DC Universe.
So against my better judgement, I will follow this title hoping that DC see s that the characters are better off separate than they will ever be as a unit.
Good but could be better.
The newest Green Lanterns of Earth, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are reluctant partners forced to work together by legendary Lantern Hal Jordan. Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns are up to no good, as usual, and these Green Lanterns must set aside their differences to stop a zombie-like rage from infecting Earth. This is an entertaining first volume to this new series, full of action, humor and great artwork. Highly recommended.
ARC from Netgalley.
Hal Jordan has established Simon Baz and Jessica Drew as the Green Lanterns who protect Earth, but both of them are still new to the Corps, and Jessica can't make a construct yet. Are these two noobs ready to stop Atrocitus and the coming of "The Red Dawn"?
This title thrives on a combination of action and internal monologue. Seeing both Lanterns struggle with fear and inadequacy (Simon with being worthy of heroism and Jessica of being strong enough to wield a GL ring at all) and rage (Simon with racial bias and prejudice and Jessica with frustration over being thought of as weak and insignificant) gives them both a really human, down-to-earth feel. AND BOTH of them must overcome to stop the surge of the Red Lanterns.
We also get some new, future plot setups. Simon has been given the power of "Emerald Sight", which appears to be a sort of glimpse into the future. Jessica (finally near the end of the Volume) is able to form a construct, and it is INSANELY POWERFUL. And let us not forget about the "Rogue Guardian" who shows up with the tool of his exile, the "Phantom Ring", a power ring who can be wielded by anyone. (Guess we'll find out more about that in Vol. 2)
Provided that Green Lanterns doesn't get bogged down with too many crossovers as they did in New 52, this title has the potential to be absolutely epic. Volume 1 was a blast. Highly recommended.
I'd gotten off the Green Lantern train some time ago. I wasn't entirely sure about this one. Baz hasn't been that interesting since a promising start, and Jessica's been written to histrionics in most of her Justice League appearances.
I was surprised, though. The book's patient enough with is relatively straightforward story to make room for character development, side characters, and steady storytelling. It could have gone a bit faster, with little seeming to happen while Jessica decides what to do with herself. There are some interesting Bleez moments, but little nuance given to the rest of the villains.
The book sets up the new series, and it remains largely a bit of groundwork, but a compelling one. Jessica and Simon have become more engaging characters, and, while this story's essentially wrapped up, there are plenty of plotlines left to follow. It's a good start for this new GL line.
Honestly this is my first Green Lantern. I quite enjoyed Jess and Simon's fight against the rage filled red lanterns. This was my first read of this character but I plan on continuing with this .
In Green Lanterns Volume 1: Rage Planet, we follow two new Green Lanterns, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, and see them adapt to being Green Lanterns.
Jessica Cruz had not left her house in 3 years due to an anxiety problem caused by what I think of as very valid reasons in the past. Simon Baz is a current convict that received his Green Lantern Ring whilst still in prison. These two bring an interesting chemistry as to strangers being forced to work together.
Lets start with the storyline of Rage Planet. At times, I found it hard to understand the motivations of not just the Green Lanterns, but everyone else. Whilst the storyline as a whole makes sense, the actual details that they went with are not as fluid and cohesive as I would like. Without getting into spoiler territory, I do not understand why the Green Lantern Corps left 2 completer rookies with the job of protecting Earth from the Red Lanterns with no guidance or advice.
The art style was a tad hit-and-miss. At times, I spent a minute just looking at a panel because it was just stunning; but then when you have those stunning panels, everything else will seem a tad bland.
If you want to read a good book about self belief, the Green Lantern Corps Volume 1: Rage Planet is an amazing book for you.
“RAAAARRRGH! My name is Atrocitus and I’m a monster with a red ring. I leads the Red Lanterns!”
“Ugh, why’re you spitting blood everywhere??”
“Excuse me but I’m VOMITING blood everywhere and it’s because I’m a Red Lantern – it’s what we do! I want to put a Rage Seed in Earth.”
“You wanna knock up the planet? That sounds stupid.”
“It is. And a penis-like Hell Tower will burrow down into the Earth’s egg, uh, core where the Seed will be placed.”
“Why!?”
“Prophecy.”
“What?”
“There’s a prophecy, dude.”
“I’ve read the New 52 Red Lanterns books and there’s never been talk of some bullshit prophecy.”
“It’s called Red Dawn.”
“That’s even stupider. You know that’s the title of a couple of crap movies, right?”
“Woah, really? Are they about being angry and wanting to impregnate a planet?”
“No, that would be immensely retarded. They do suck though.”
“I’m still going to watch them.”
“Moron. Wait, why Earth exactly?”
“It’s the angriest planet in the universe.”
“And how did you find that out?”
“…”
“Tell me this isn’t the whole book.”
“Hello, I’m Simon Baz!”
“And I’m Jessica Cruz!”
“And together we are the new Green Lanterns!”
“We don’t get along at first but eventually become friends. This is a buddy cop movie, like a superhero version of Lethal Weapon but not as good!”
“Huh. Well, I guess you two do have decent chemistry and aren’t totally annoying. But why do so many Green Lanterns come from Earth?”
“…”
“And I’m a secret Guardian who made a secret super ring – I need to speak to Hal Jordan!”
“Go away, secret Guardian, you’re meant for later books!”
“Ok, I’ll go wait in the wings and order a beer.”
“Hi, I’m Atrocitus and I’ve got some nonsense to spew.”
“I’ll leave you all to it, I don’t need to hear it again.”
“Are you coming back to see what happens in the next book?”
“Yeah, you guys look great!”
“Did he have his fingers in his ears?”
“He was running too. I don’t think he’s gonna come back. Did you just spit blood on my spiffy green outfit??”
“Vomited blood, yes.”
“Why?!”
“I’ve been reading DC Rebirth books. I mean, I’m a Red Lantern, it’s what I do.”
“Do you need medical treatment?”
“Got any Tums?”
“No, but I can construct a green one.”
“Awesome. Ooo, it tastes minty too! So let’s get down to it. There’s this Prophecy called Red Dawn…”
(Both Green Lanterns vomit.)
I really liked this book. There are so many reasons that I personally liked it which probably wont resonate with everyone but this is my review and why I like it. Thank you to Net Galley and DC Comics for allowing me to read this for an honest review and I can't thank you both enough.
Rebirth has been so much fun to read. The Green Lantern Corps is a group of police officers that protect the entire Universe. The Corp has been destroyed and only a few are left My favorite Green lantern has gone to off to find out what is happening and Earth is left with two rookie Green Lanterns. I am not current on the Green Lantern or Green Lantern Corps so I'm not completely sure of what happened to Kyle, John, or Guy, but Earth now has Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. I read how Simon became a Lantern but this is my first exposure to Jessica and I have to say I love her character. What I love about her is that she isn't your standard Lantern candidate. Hal Jordan is the definition of brave. He is fearless and strong. Jessica is an anxiety mess scared of everything in the world. She has locked herself in her apartment for the last 3 years scared of the outside world and yet she is a Lantern who is supposed to overcome great fear. I am the biggest Batman fan but even I have to admit that I have had day dreams of being chosen by a ring to fly off and save the galaxy, but I am an emotional anxiety wreck. I'd never be a lantern. Until now.
Ok, so the story is all about these two new lanterns having to share a planet to protect as well as share a power battery. We do see Hal Jordan at the beginning subject these two to a test which they fail and they fight back and forth. In order to train them and make them work as a team since Hal can't stick around he merges their batteries and now they can only charge there rings when they are together and summon the battery as a team. This obviously causes some tension and then problems as these two have to figure out how to work things out.
The big story is the Red Lanterns are desperately trying to rebuild themselves. In order to do this they have to raise their hell tower and plant a seed to bring about this Red Dawn. No big shocker, the Hell tower is located here on Earth. The Red Lanterns are going to take over our planet to rebuild their ranks. The tower has already to infect the world with rage causing people to fight and tear each other apart. Now I included the picture below for one reason only. The Hell Tower is just outside St Louis Missouri and in the bottom left panel is the Arch and my hometown pride is shinning through. If this had a St Louis Blues Logo in the background somewhere I would blow this up and frame it.
I really liked this book and I have to say it was a fast read. I was addicted to this book from the moment I picked it up. This review is easily a 5 out of 5 star read and I can't wait to read on and see where these two Lanterns go. I am also really curious about the other 4 Lanterns from Earth so I will be trying to catch up on what I missed before Rebirth.
When the Rebirth series launched I was overwhelmed by all the new stories, but wasn’t interested in reading Green Lanterns at first. Then, I kept hearing good things about the rebirth singles and the people at my local comic store advised me to read it. So when I saw the first Volume on NetGalley I gave it a shot and re quested to read it. And how glad I am, that I did.
The story of Earth’s two new Green Lanterns Simon Baz (I chuckled at the name because I still can’t get over Carry On by Rainbow Rowell) and Jessica Cruz is quite enjoyable. Having to fight together against evil trying to take over the world without liking each other can bring some obstacles more, than you’d like. The story had a natural flow, you understand quite a lot even if you didn’t read the New 52 Comics (although, there are still a lot of lacking background information, naturally) and the artwork is pretty good and impressive.
I think it’s great to see a superhero fighting her anxiety and shows that everybody can be a hero by overcoming their fears in certain situation. Classic interpretation, but the implementation in the story is very important and beautifully done!
I’m really interested in seeing where the story continues with Jessica and Simon and the rogue Guardian. Maybe this’ll shed some light on the whole Rebirth evolution?
I’m really glad I picked this up and so should you! :)
Meh. So often these new Rebirth books, even though they have taken the issue numbers back to #1, have been about as much of a restart as rebooting my laptop – very little changes, but I've slowly gotten fifteen minutes older. This volume tries its best at times to deserve the new low number – something of the awesomeness, the prestige, the new beginningness of it all, but at other times it fails completely. It's utterly, utterly repetitive, and if one of the new characters tells us who they are once more I shall throw something at them. And yet it hints at back story for them both that isn't in my e-arc copy – possibly it left the Rebirth special out but I doubt it. What's more, what you do need isn't the bit that's drummed into you on every page turn. But the biggest problem is that the baddie is just some dodgy oo-er demon character, trying to embody rage and coming across like Venom stuck in a queue somewhere. It's OK (and that's praise, as I never really liked any of the Lanterns), but it could still have been better.
That was really, really Rage-y. Not surprising considering the title. But even with the title I didn't think that this TPB would have quite so much rage in it.
Still, once I got past the rage it was an interesting TPB. I really like the two new Green Lanterns, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. They both have what Hal Jordan hasn't had in quite a long time. They have room for their story to get interesting and twisty and turney. They're both messes who have to put all that aside, work together, and save the world. And messy characters mean interesting stories.
In this TPB they're going against the Red Lanterns. Trying to stop the Red Dawn from happening while they're also learning how to use their rings (Simon even gets some new powers as well.)
It was a fun TPB, and I look forward to seeing what's going to happen next with these two.
I got this ARC through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment.
The 2 newest rookie GL's must partner up to protect Earth. The Red Lanterns are trying to fulfill a prophecy called Red Dawn. The story isn't all that great. People across the Earth are being infected with some kind of rage virus. What is good is the characterization and interactions between Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. It's really what makes the book. Simon Basically thinks he can do anything through sheer willpower and he pretty much can. Jessica used to be Power Ring and was controlled by her ring until she finally overcame it. She's plagued by self-doubt and hasn't been able to form a construct because of it.
