The Unlikeable demon hunter by Deborah Wilde.
Twenty year old Nava Katz brothers hunts demon foes. Her brother is having his induction when she accidentally steals his destiny.
Can she do what her brother has been trained to do all his life?.
A good read. Good story and some good characters. Little slow though 4*.

Molly is seen as a failure and a screw up by her parents but her twin brother Avi was the shining star of the family. Nava had wanted a career as a dancer but then that dream just not being responsible. Nava had no life plans after the dream of a dancer came to an end. Avi had been raised by the Brotherhood of David to be a Chosen and be a demon hunter. Nava is late and hungover when she gets to her brothers initiation ceremony then to top it off things go crazy. Then things go crazy at her twins initiation and Nava receives the talents and becomes the Chosen and not Avi. Her family doesn’t even ask Nava how she feels about all the change and that she was the Chosen instead of Avi who had trained all his life to be a demon hunter and instead his twin was to become the demon hunter instead. Even though Avi was resentful and jealous that Nava was now the chosen but he still loved his twin. It is heartbreaking to see how littler Nava’s family has in her. The Brotherhood [Of David] who is an all male doesn’t like the fact that Nava has become the next Chosen and demon hunter. How many Chosen were passed by because of being female? Nava is determined to be herself even being a chosen and that does cause some problems between Nava and her leader who was a former boy band rock star Rohan. Nava had been crushing on Rohan and there was a strong hot chemistry between Nava and Rohan.
I really enjoyed this book that made me choke at times and chuckle at others. I liked how the author showed what Nava had went through. This was a fast paced book with a good plot. I also felt it was well written. It was a fun good read. I didn’t blame Avi for the way he had felt he had been the one to be the Chosen not Nava but I was happy to see it did show he loved his twin. I also felt this book had a lot of realism in it. I didn’t care for Nava’s parents. I liked the mythology that was in this book. I didn’t really feel Nava was unlikeable that some seem to feel. She was being a rebel and trying to be herself. This book had a lot of action which I really liked. I didn’t like how obsessed Nava seemed to be with sex. All and all i did enjoy this book a lot and I recommend.

The story had a little bit of everything, suspense, romance, and angst. I can't wait to see what's up next.

I love this book, it's fun take on a buffyesque world of paranormal, where the demons are real and the only people who can save the world are theRrasha an Elite force made up of young men trained by rabbis. A group of young men that is until the wrong twin joins the good fight. For Nava watching her brother grow up under the rabbis tutelage as the perfect twin caused her to act out and embrace her inner bad girl little did she realise she and her brother were more alike than you would think.

When the magic goes awry and Nava not Ari is chosen as the next Rasha tensions are high with the Arabia and the male Rashad coming to terms with their latest recruit. But for Nava she knows that her brother Ari should be Rasha he's trained for years where as she's partied for years. With her world changing and her brother not speaking Nava begins to embrace the demons in more ways than one. 5 stars for this funky paranormal, lock your doors grab the salt and get your local priest to bless the taps cause the demons are here and it's on like donkey Kong! I can't wait to read the next part in Nava and the Rasha's story.

I really wanted to like this book. I liked some parts of the book, but then finally found that the main character was just not likable enough.

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter was a fun, fast-paced story that was full of action and humor and I really enjoyed it!

The Brotherhood of David, a group of all male demon hunters, has been preparing Ari Katz for induction into the Brotherhood his entire life. So, imagine everyone’s surprise when his twin sister Nava is chosen during the ceremony instead of him. Nava is nothing like the other members of the Brotherhood and no one knows quite what to make of this new development. Nava is given little time to adjust before she is thrown into a world full of demons where she has to figure out how to survive and what it is she really wants.

As the title suggests, Nava is not an entirely likable character at the start of this book. She’s quite crass and has a tendency to say the completely wrong thing in nearly every situation. Nava has never been able to measure up to her brother Ari and as a result has stopped trying to prove she can. She therefore does precisely what she wants, when she wants, consequences be damned. Over the course of the book though, you get to see different sides of Nava that give you a better understanding as to why she portrays herself the way she does.

Nava’s interactions with the other members of the Brotherhood led to a lot of the books humorous moments. The banter between Nava and Rohan was particularly enjoyable. Unfortunately, my enjoyment of them together pretty much ended at the banter. There simply wasn’t any sexual chemistry and I would have enjoyed things more if there hadn’t been a romance of sorts introduced.

The magic system in this book is definitely unique and I enjoyed learning about it. I liked how the magic of the members of the Brotherhood manifested and how it was tied to that person’s personality. The scenes where Nava is learning what her magic is and how to control it were a lot of fun to read. I also really enjoyed the seeing the different types of demons pop up throughout the book. The author didn’t stick to one specific kind of demon which led to a lot of variety in what the Brotherhood was fighting.

Overall, The Unlikeable Demon Hunter was a lot of fun to read and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be continuing with the series and hope to see more from the author in the future.

Wow, this book blew me away! There was just the right balance of crass, offensive awesomeness and smutty, paranormal-filled action to make this a thoroughly addictive read. If this is only the introduction, I can’t wait to see where this series goes!

Nava is everything I love in a reluctant hero. She’s tough, independent, and appears to have zero inhibitions. Throw in some truly epic sarcasm and comebacks and I’m in love. Sure, she’s flawed in some truly amazing ways, but that only makes me love her even more. She’s been playing second to her twin, Ari, who was chosen at birth to be part of some super-secret demon hunting organization. It’s all boys, so it was obviously never meant to be her… until things get turned on their head. During her twin’s induction ceremony, it appears that the superpower ends up with her, along with a ring that cannot be removed (no matter how hard she tries).

Since Nava hasn’t been trained from birth like her brother has, she’s got a lot of catching up to do in a short amount of time. Having magic powers only gets you so far when you can’t even tell demon from human most of the time. Oh, and then there’s the sexy, broody guardian she’s assigned, who also happens to be a retired rock god. The sizzle only amps up the building tension in Nava’s life. There is also some big bad demon out to get her because she accidently/sort-of on purpose killed his kids. The stress is high, but Nava manages to keep it together… as much as can be expected.

As I said, this book is just filled with unapologetic rudeness, horrible behavior, even worse choices, oodles of emotional baggage, and one awesome chick. If you are easily offended, what are you doing reading a book with the word “unlikeable” in the title? Seriously, this book is not for someone who doesn’t enjoy a trip into some darker books. That being said, if you are even remotely interested in someone who can backtalk with the best of them while still dealing with her own emotional issues, Nava is definitely your gal.

Nava is a party girl with no cares in the world, drinking and partying like there is no tomorrow. Of course, after a night of sex and drinking, she is late to her brother’s induction ceremony into the demon hunters’ society. What makes matters worse, she is the one that is inducted during the magical ceremony. Being the first girl ever in the society, no one is happy, least of all her twin brother. Nava will stop at nothing to get her brother inducted between fighting the demons who want the privilege of killing the first female demon hunter and learning all the skills she needs to survive her new profession. At the beginning of the book, I didn’t really like Nava. As the book goes on, I really come to feel for her. She had some issues that lead her to feeling useless and aimless. However, I must admit I would have liked more of this information more towards the front. Her attitudes would have made more sense instead of her coming across as someone who doesn’t care about her life. As an aside, Nava does not spend her time talking/thinking about sex. She does at times throughout the books, but it is in no way all the time; she likes sex and isn’t afraid to talk about it. This book is well-written, has an interesting plot, excellent action, and I really liked the characters, although I must say at times the demon hunters seemed a little too similar. I am really looking forward to reading more in this series. Recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and Te Da Media/Broad Universe for the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed. This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.

I started this book but it just did not catch me. Using twins was a good idea but I just did not care about either characters. I do appreciate you allowing me to try the book. I am not doing a review anywhere except here.

I loved this book and am waiting with bated breath for the next one in the series! Nava, a new demon hunter, is like no other heroine. The first woman in "Demon Club", she is unabashedly hedonistic and known for her abrupt way of telling it like it is. Demure she isn't. Now Nava's trying to make her way through uncharted territory without getting killed. It doesn't help that the guys in Demon Club aren't that happy to have her as part of the team. Lots of laugh out loud fun and steamy romance!

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter by Deborah Wilde (Nava Katz #1)

This is a sink your teeth into urban fantasy that will definitely be on my must read list. I am looking forward to delving deeper into the "demon hunters" world.

Nava has just become the first female member of the Brotherhood of David - a group that fights against demons who walk the earth. Ah so this must mean she is a worthy candidate - a woman of the highest morals and suitably trained to take on all this responsibility. Think again. Nava has a few issues including hooking up with the good looking guy behind the bar (who just might be a demon in his spare time) and having one too many drinks than are good for her. Drifting through life she is no where near as together as her twin brother, Ari, who has been preparing to join the Brotherhood since the day he was born.

Accidentally interrupting her bother's induction ceremony, Nava must assume his role and assume it quickly with all the bells and whistles of fighting demons.

I really like elements of this book but did not always like Nava which works with the title and was probably the clear intention of the writer. The only thing was sometimes that dislike kept me from really enjoying moments in the story. It was certainly an action packed adventure and there was a cast of characters who worked well within the universe created for this tale. I particularly like the creation of the variety of demons the Brotherhood had to deal with and there was a definite order to rules that controlled the world Nava was working within. There was enough in this book to make me want to find out more about the Brotherhood and come back to see the next saga that Nava will face. I just hope she is a little less unlikeable and a tiny bit more empowered.

THE UNLIKEABLE DEMON HUNTER is the first book in a fun, funny, and unapologetically raunchy new urban fantasy series. This book won’t be for everyone, but I had an absolute blast reading it; this is a clever guilty pleasure at its best.

Nava Katz has known that her twin brother Ari was destined to join the Brotherhood practically since birth, ever since their Rabbi tested him for magic and named him a future demon hunter. While the two siblings are close as they can be, their lives couldn’t be more different: Ari studies his ass off at university and trains with the Brotherhood while Nava drowns her sorrows in booze and hot guys. So when their family discovers that it’s actually Nava who’s the magic wielder, everyone is more than a little shocked and skeptical. For one thing, Nava’s a woman…and she can’t even speak Hebrew! How’s she going to pull off hunting demons with the all-male Brotherhood and using magic rooted in Jewish traditions?

She does it with style, as it turns out. A certain “hot mess je ne sais quoi,” if you will. Nava’s an unapologetic party girl (which I quite liked about her) but she’s basically friendless aside from Ari; she brings fun and sass to the uptight Brothers, while they bring much needed companionship and human connection. After they get over the whole “she’s a woman thing,” that is. But Nava works her way into the hearts of the Brothers, and I think readers will like her too. She’s seriously over the top and crass, but honestly it was refreshing. She drinks, she smokes weed, she hooks up, and she gets herself off, all on page. Pretty typical for a twenty year-old, but not found too often in urban fantasy.

There’s more to Nava than just her wilder side though, which we see mostly through her relationship with Ari (and to a lesser extent, her mentor and friend Rohan). For the first time ever, the twins are at odds…and it’s put Nava off her game. She may not have wanted the life of the Brotherhood, but she can’t apologize for an accident of birth forever. The only logical option? Scheme and manoeuvre her way into securing a spot in the clandestine organization for Ari, despite his lack of magic. Nava’s budding romance with Rohan also shows her more vulnerable side, despite the fact that she tries to play it like she isn’t that into him aside from sex. Mhm, okay girl. Sure you aren’t. I predict an epic push-and-pull between these two throughout the series.

In case you can’t tell, the characters are the real selling point in THE UNLIKEABLE DEMON HUNTER. The world building isn’t anything too special if you’ve read a lot of urban fantasy, although I did love the fact that the religious order in this world is Jewish rather than the default Christian inspired orders you typically see. Each member of the Brotherhood has magic that enables them to fight demons, but it manifests in a different way for each person depending on their personality traits. For Nava, she’s the lady of shock and awe…so she shocks demons. Cute, right? The demons are both gross and fun, and my personal favourite was a half-goblin with a precious gem fetish.

If you enjoy crass humour and you’re in the market for a fun, snarky read, then THE UNLIKEABLE DEMON HUNTER is for you.

I loved reading these stories! Nava was an amazing narrator, and I just loved her journey! The thing is, is that she's pretty hilarious! I mean, the situations that she gets into! She doesn't make the best of decisions in the beginning, but it's more of an active choice to make bad decisions! And she learns and grows!

I empathize with her situation. Her twin brother is the goody two shoes one. She's the screw up, and people expect that. But then she becomes a Rasha, and yeah, things are turned on their sides! I think, when all is said and done, she dealt with things better than the Brotherhood did!

Of course being the only female in the ranks vs. being support for the Brotherhood is a tough gig. And that she's a highly sexual creature with all these males, yeah, hijinks were bound to follow! I really enjoyed her with Rohan!

The training that she went through-that these guys have had all their lives, while she's having it crammed in during this time, was very interesting! And she had to use it, and I can't wait to see her continue to use it!

Such a fantastic series, and I can't wait for the sequel, I need more!

Wild child Nava had never been the golden child, that position was held by her twin brother Ari, who was destined to become the member of a secret demon fighting brotherhood right up until the moment when Nava does instead. And that's when the fun begins.

I originally thought someone had made a mistake with the title and that it should be (and still could be) The Unlikely Demon Hunter since Nava is the first female to become a demon hunter (in this series). However, UNLIKEABLE really fits. Nava is 20 years old and an immature 20 at that. I like my urban fantasy heroines to be strong and competent (after training) and Nava is neither. She is consumed with thoughts of sex and alcohol and has no idea what she wants from life other than having a good time. I can accept a character thrown into a destiny she did not expect to react poorly, but Nava is an idiot getting less than a week's training then going off to confront something she's not prepared for.

Given the amount of sex and page time devoted to it (25% perhaps?), this really doesn't fit the urban fantasy genre. I would say it's more new adult-paranormal romance. I wondered if the author was trying to accomplish/prove something by writing just about every sex partner potential m/m, m/f, human/demon, f/f, menage etc. She even threw in anal sex. Didn't she think anything could be "saved" for future books?

I give this a border line ok rating the story because I was able to finish it and the writing and world had potential. I also had a pretty good laugh at location 1857. It's just that the characters were poorly developed, some of the action implausible and for the genre, there's too much emphasis on sex.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Nava is funny, foul mouth and don't take crap from anyone. She can home drunk and ruined her twins brothers induction ceremony into the Brotherhood of David. Which now she is in the club and her brother is not and all she wants is to walk away. But first she has to fix what she messed up.
This book is a must read if you like girls stepping up and kick some butts better then the guys.

This book definitely had some aspects I really liked. I liked this secret group killing demons and their head quarters and her bff. it was a fun read and Ari was pretty funny. What I would have liked to see more of was more interactions with all the other hunter guys I think building those relationships would be really good. But I did enjoy this one and will be looking out for the second

Nava was very hard to like! She was more obnoxious than any character I can ever recall. I really had a hard time connecting with her...but I could still sympathize with her. Absolutely loved all the supporting characters especially Rohan and Ari. I plan on reading the next book in the series.

The title is appropriate and unfortunately the author did too good of a job making the lead character thouroughly unlikeable. I can't stand women like her in real life and didn't appreciate her as a main character. Maybe it would have helped me as a reader to have had her history backstory earlier instead of waiting almost until the end. That being said, the male characters in this book are redeeming qualities for this book. I have to add though that by the end, Nava (main female character) was becoming less unlikeable. I also don't think most readers would have as harsh a reaction to Nava as I personally did so I give this book 3 stars
