This is the 10th book in the series.
There was a lot going on in this book. Multiple enemies and mysteries to be solved. There aren't really any answers in this book. To find out what is going on means reading the future books. There is a lot of past events mentioned but not with enough details to help you understand the past events. Made the book kind of confusing.
FIRESTORM is the latest, much anticipated book 10 in the Dragon Kings series. Donna Grant does not disappoint! I had a hard time keeping my jaw off the floor. Oh the revelations!!!!
Truth be told, I just wanna crawl in this universe and live. It's full of mystery, suspense, danger, magic, Dragons, Druids, Fae and Highlanders. What more could you ask for?!?
It starts off with a gut wrenching prologue that almost had me in tears then proceeds to take you on a rollercoaster ride that will keep you totally enthralled. I honestly think I read it record time. I couldn't put it down nor could I read fast enough.
Since this is book 10 in the series, I'm not sure you can jump in and start from here since it is a rather complex storyline. I DO, however highly recommend this series starting from Dark Heat which is book 1.
I was given a copy of this book from the publisher via netgalley for my honest, unbiased review.
This is the tenth book in the Dark Kings series and I haven’t read any of the previous books but still enjoyed this one! It tells the story of Dimitri, the White Dragon-shifter King, and Faith, and archaeologist who has discovered a Dragon skeleton on Dimitiri’s previous home island. There was a tremendous battle centuries ago between humans and the dragons left this realm, leaving behind their Kings to who were there to protect them.
Desperate to prevent annihilation, most dragons were sent by their kings to an alternative, safe realm Dimitri has been sent by the King of all the Dragons to destroy the skeleton so no evidence of their existence is in the human realm. He didn’t anticipate he’d end up protecting the skeleton rather than destroying it because he is so attracted to Faith. Dimitri finds himself torn between his duty to the King and his feelings for Faith . . . .
This is a great mix of mystery, mythology, power plays, romance and so much more. It was great to read another story with dragon-shifters as key characters with the Dark Fae also playing important roles. The use of different points of view through the story makes it easier to relate to the experiences and attitudes of the different characters and the ending is brilliant!
Many thanks to the publishers for gifting me a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review.
3.5*
I read a review on this book and immediately went looking for it, my problem was I assumed it was a first in series whereas in actual fact it's book 10.
The earth used to belong to the dragons and all was well but humans like a plague spread through the land taking more and more until they wanted it all and so they drove the dragons away. The dragons having taken a vow to protect the humans were powerless and so in their billions they fled to another realm leaving only the kings behind. The Kings destroyed all trace of dragons and then slept for centuries while waited for humans to forget and they did, dragons became a myth and now the kings are back in human form.
Life isn't going smoothly for the dragons and on top of all their other problems it looks like Dr. Faith Reynolds has unearthed an ancient dragon skeleton.
There's a lot here to like, the story kept me reading and I liked both Faith and Dimitri along with the intriguing Tamir. I felt at times that I was missing out and playing catch-up because I'd not read the previous books and there's no denying this affected my enjoyment of the book but that's my fault for not checking before I started reading, so if you're thinking of giving this a try my advice would be to start from the beginning.
Also I don't generally read books which feature the Fae just because as a rule I don't like them and I would have skipped this had the Fae had been mentioned in the blurb but they weren't so I didn't and it didn't detract from my enjoyment.
I do wish I'd started at book 1 but I'm not going to go back now.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and St Martins Press.
Dimitri has lived his life protecting the world for the knowledge about the Dragon kind. Now that is threatened by an oh, so, sexy, Dr. Faith Reynolds.
Faith is an archeologist that has uncovered, what she believes, is a honest to God dragon skeleton.
When the uber alpha guard, Dimitri, comes to oversee her dig, she is caught up in his sexy appeal but not even close to Dimitri’s obsession with Faith. He should be focused on removing all evidence of this fellow dragon that was left behind but all he can do is be drawn to Faith and her passion for his kind.
Grant knows how to write that smoldering hot ALPHA "king" dragon shifters and the women strong enough to love them. FIRESTORM provides the perfect amount of action intense and romantic scenes to create a strong balanced read. While the multiple point of views brought a new dimension to this series.
I received this ARC copy of Firestorm from St. Martin Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. This book is set for publication March 07, 2017.

This was a great read. It was the first of her books I have read. I couldn't put it down. I love the characters and world Donna has created with this series. I plan to go back and read the rest of the series as well. It is definitely one to add to your TBR lists. You won't be disappointed.
Characters
Dimitri, a white dragon king, whose family is not with him since the war between man and dragons. Holding a promise to keep humans safe but will not fall in love with one. Faith Reynolds is an archaeologist whose instincts lead her to the remains of a white dragon. Together, they had a pretty good chemistry
Storyline
Since Faith has uncovered the skeletons of a dragon and it happened to be a white, Con gave him the task to get rid of it so they could avoid a disaster. However, it is unveiled that someone murdered his dragon so he wants to know exactly how he died. As they try to figure it out, the dark faes are on their tails and has already killed some of her crew.
Recommendation
This is the 10th book of the Dragon Kings series written by Donna Grant. Although a lot of things happened, the author explains what occurred previously well and it did not take up the whole book. Fans of the series will like it and the continuation of Rhi's story continues on. It is a bit frustrating because I am eager for her own book (Please tell me she will have one, she has been through so much and yet we don't know everything about her yet). Looking forward to the next book.

Curse it. Or more fitting: curse me!! I dived into this book with open eyes, knowing it is part of an ongoing series but thought I could ride the waves and made do. Well, not really. I'm quite stubborn though and there's an upside to this whole experience: I get to read a new-to-me series and I have 9 books to catch up on the whole Dark Kings universe!
So. Yes, it was a bit of a struggle for a touch when I got to twenty percent of the pages; the multiple character's voices on top of the hero and heroine's and implied past events had me grappling. But. BUT. Firestorm is an intriguing story that hinted up at much more in the future, and sketched a not so clean-cut black and white picture to everyone or everything in the book. The Dark and Light Fae, the Druids, the Dragon Kings and kin; everyone seemed to have agendas.
Dmitri and Faith, the hero and heroine of this book, didn't seem to be the most remarkable of the casts - though I hope to be proven wrong as the series progressing. Seriously though, except for Faith's mysteriously missing part of family tree, I was more invested on other characters instead of this new couple. No surprise who I took notice of: Con and Ulrik - I really wish for an epic confrontation in the future of these two.
The ending of this book is a bit of a let-down for me. There's no apparent closure and instead the questions keep on piling up; like me wondering if there's consequences of Faith closing up the dig project without giving out explanation to the people funding the project, among others. It's a clever ploy to follow the series for those eager to know the answer for sure. At least it worked that way for me. This entry to the Dark Kings series lured me to look for previous books in the series to catch up on each stories and what had been happening so far. More magic and men of dragon time for me; yay!
Advanced copy of this book is kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Firestorm by Donna Grant was the first book I've read by this author and book 10 in the Kings series. I really liked the premise of this story, the dragon and human interaction concept was really cool. Dimitri was super sexy and I enjoyed his character at first, and although I felt that he had strong emotions for Faith, I didn't feel like it was an enternity life long soul mate kind of love. Although this is a stand alone novel, it doesn't quite wrap up at the end. Of course this is to encourage readers to get the next book in the series, because there were a TON of other secondary characters interwoven in the story, but being as this was the first book I've read by this author let alone series, I felt like I was missing out on a lot of details and plot points which took away from my enjoyment of the book. Honestly, I sped through the first 45% of the book because it was interesting and kept my interest however, after that the story took a turn and I struggled for days to finish it, only to have nothing settled, answered or concluded. For that reason I'm only able to give this book 3.5 stars. I appreciate the opportunity to read the book and Thank Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
If there was a way to rate the book 3.5, that's what I would have picked. The main story was captivating and entertaining, with a good amount of drama, suspense and romance. Since this was the first book in the series I have read, the greater plot of the Dragons vs. Fae vs. Whoever left me a little confused.
Tell me a story about a shifter who mate for life and I’m sold! I love the trend of dragon shifters I’ve been seeing lately. There just seems to be something more magical about them versus other types of shifters.
I was very entertained with this plot. Faith is an archaeologist who finds bones in a cave that she believes proves the existence to Dragons. The story gets leaked and now there are forces trying to steal the bones at all costs. Dimitri, a dragon king is sent to destroy the bones to protect their existence but ends up becoming Faiths protector against the evil forces.
I was hooked immediately when the author teases us with Faith’s pull to the dragon bones. You know there is something going on there. Add to that, she is described as smart but scatterbrained. It’s obvious she needs a protector and what better than Dimitri. He’s your typical gruff, silent Alpha male.
I’m eager to read more from this series. ARC provided by NetGalley.
I'm not big on paranormal/fantasy (what’s the difference between those two?) romance, but I like Donna Grant and decided to give Firestorm a chance. I’m glad I did, because it is a suspenseful and romantic tale that captivated me. Bonus - I might now have a thing for dragons. Who knew?
Dimitri has a duty and plans, and archaeologist Faith inadvertently wanders into the middle of it and throws him off balance. He can’t decides if he wants her by his side or if he dislikes her, but he does want to protect her even if it messes up his plans. He’ll have to try to have both or decide which is more important.
The only complaint about Firestorm is that there are subplots that rely on your knowledge derived from other books in the series. I felt a little lost at times. Otherwise, Firestorm was an entertaining read that has me reconsidering paranormal romance.
FIRESTORM is book ten in the Dark Kings series by Donna Grant. Normally I would say it’s find to read these books as standalones but I feel like with ten books already out, it’s probably best to read them in order. Grant has been building this world for a very long time. Some series like this one are actually spin-offs from her other series but I don’t think you need to read those to enjoy this one.
I always enjoy Grant’s heroes in this series. While they are powerful and deadly, they don’t really come across as too otherworldly. Yes, they are dragon shifters and they do often talk like they are from another time, but there’s a relatable quality to them that makes them very easy to fall in love with. Take Dimitri for example. He takes loyalty very seriously and when something threatens that, his quiet personality becomes more intense. Dimitri is soft yet intense at the same time and I think he’s actually my favorite part of this book. He made me swoon on a lot of occasions as I was reading this book.
The heroine of the story is an arecheologist named Faith. Now I’m a bit of a sucker with archeologist characters. I just find them so fascinating so I was very much looking forward to getting to know Faith. While I enjoyed her career, I wasn’t so head over heels in love with Faith. She doesn’t do anything bad that makes me hate it, but I think it’s because Dimitri was so good of a character that she was overshadowed by him. I really would’ve liked to put myself in place of Faith for the duration of this book. That’s how much I enjoyed Dimitri.
So that being said, I did enjoy this book overall. I think Donna Grant’s specialty is within this genre so if you like dragons or highlanders and Paranormal Romance, then you need to check out Grant’s extensive backlist.
I just could not get into this book. It is totally me, I'm sure. I have read about dragons before but this one I just didn't care for and therefore didn't finish. Sorry, I tried.
DNF at 31%
I feel bad about giving this one star - as they say, it's not the book, it's me - but if I DNF a book it gets one star, them's the rules!
First off, this appears to be the 10th book in a series, whilst I could read the main plot fine, some of the nuances of other characters and story arcs passed me by. Clearly I would not recommend that you jump into the series in the 10th installment although it appears possible to read as a stand-alone.
I was hooked by the word 'dragon' in the blurb and failed to register that Dmitri, the dragon in question, is a centuries old guy from a Scottish island. I loath reading the Scottish brogue, love the sound hate it written down - so the constant "isnae" and "disnae" was like needles in my eyes.
Also, for all that Dmitri is a shifter, this reads much more like (what I consider to be) old school paranormal - you know where the vampire has lived for thousands of years and hates humans because they tortured his pet bunny rabbit/ wiped out his family yadda yadda, then he meets our feisty heroine (an archaeologist in this case) and suddenly gets all protective feelings. Dmitri is your standard paranormal hero: corded muscles; broad shoulders tapering to the obligatory V; large tatttoo; well-endowed etc etc.
Our feisty heroine Faith goes through all of the standard responses to our hero: mouth watering at the sight of his member; clenching; lip licking etc.
Overall, if I had read some of the previous books and this was written more in an Urban Fantasy way I would probably have loved it. I blame myself for skim-reading the blurb and requesting a book that, if I had read it carefully, is not a popular genre for me anymore.
Recommended for those who enjoy paranormal romance and are looking to branch out into other creatures.
Will another King fall? Dmitri has just been told that someone has found one of his light dragon's after all these years and he has to find out why he missed finding him after sending all the others away.
Faith knows that she needs to find out the story about this skeleton as she knows that it has a story and no one believes that it is a dragon. Dmitri needs to destroy the remains but the more he finds out the more he needs to know why it has been hidden all this time.
Faith has learnt the truth about the Kings and she is afraid yet she knows that she can help. But the Dark will stop at nothing to take her away.
Ulrik is still up to his tricks just wish what his end game is. Rhi surprises us as she seems to be getting on with Con, weird hey? But what will happen at the end with them?
There is still so much light & dark in the stories and we still have the reaper that is looking out for Rhi, when will he show himself?
I think that V is going to be the one that matters the most as he is the one that will decide Con's future as leader. Just keep them coming as the more we learn the more we want. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley & the publishing house in exchange for my honest thoughts.
This is the tenth book in the Dark Kings series, but can definitely be read as a standalone with no problem since I've only read a couple of the books in this series and I've been fine.
I am a huge fan of both the paranormal and fantasy genres and I'm always on the hunt for a really great story and this is definitely it! I plan to go back and read all of the books in this amazing series since I'm completely hooked and want to become lost in a world where dragons exist!
Faith is an archaeologist who has her entire life turned upside down when she is faced with the fact that dragons really do exist and in fact, were here long before humans ever came to be. This author does an incredible job of weaving a story within a story so that there's enough going on to keep things interesting enough to not want the story to ever end and I loved this!
Dimitri and all of his people are fascinating and I want to learn so much more about all of them! I got a sense of where this series is going to go next and I hope that I'm right and I can't wait! I highly recommend reading this entire series to anyone and I look forward to so much more from this author in the future!
Firestorm by Donna Grant
Dark Kings #10
Dragon bones found in a cave are just the hook at the beginning of this fast paced story. With dark forces wanting to get their hands on the bones and existing dragons wanting the bones to disappear a lot is at stake. Add in snippets from other series all linked to the Dark Kings series and I came away wanting to begin at the beginning with books unread and read them all. I was not lost and this book does stand on its own but I felt that if I had read the previous books and the other series linked to it I would have seen more and been able to understand a bit more at some points in the story.
Dmitri, King of the White Dragons, is sent by his king to Fair Isle to deal with the dragon bones. They must disappear and he is chosen to take care of the issue. Little did he know going in that he would find a smart, strong, and sensual woman, Faith Reynolds, who would end up being his mate. With evil magic and Dark Fae to contend with, bones to save, a love undying to create and a mystery still unsolved this book had a lot going on. I enjoyed the relationship between Dmitri and Faith and really want to know who her father might be (maybe a dragon?) and wonder how that will play into the next book. I also wonder what will happen with other characters mentioned in the book even though I have just heard of them for the first time. I hope that a solution will be found for the dragons and that their King of Kings will find a HEA someday. I can almost see this as a TV series…wonder who I would sign for actors and actresses to play the parts…
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. This is my honest review.
4 Stars
The Dragon King series is one of my favorite long running paranormal romance series and while I can say I have been falling into a bit of a rut with it as is to be expected when you get into a series that goes on so long, Firestorm really opens the world back up to me giving me the little pieces I have been missing the last few books.
Dimitri is not fond of humans, he has spent lifetimes feeling apathetic, burgeoning on hate to the beings that showed up in his world changing it and him forever. If you have read any of this series before now you know that there is a long and difficult history between the dragons and humans, honor bound to protect them the Dragon Kings end up sacrificing everything to save a weaker race even after the humans betrayed the dragons in the most horrific of ways.
I loved that with Dimitri's story we get more of the back story, which is honestly heartbreaking. While the past 9 books have reminded why the only dragons left in the 'human' world are the Dragon Kings we've only ever gotten the basic facts, with this one we get at least one Dragon Kings detailed story and feelings and it is an emotional journey.
Another major point to this book is that my turning hatred toward Con (I have really not liked him the last several books) got a bit of a reprieve. We get a good look into him this book. We get to see his pain and struggles though I will say he is still as big an enigma as ever, but seeing that he truly hates what is happening and is at as much of a loss on how to stop everything as any one else lightens my heart a little when it comes to him. I am still irked about his relationship with the Queen, I am still unsure of his motivations and his history, and I am less and less sure that he is Rhi's King but I am not as disgusted with him as I have been. I think we have a long way to go before we get to his book but perhaps we have turned a corner with Con and we will slowly start to get all his little pieces to fall together in preparation for his book.
I think with Firestorm the book has less to do with the romance, though it is a well done romance, and more to do with all the side stories beginning to have movement. It's like a chess board and finally the pawns are starting to make way for the knights and rooks to move, soon we'll have the King and the Queen making their plays and that is what I am waiting on. I don't know how long it is going to take us to get there, there are a LOT of Kings and this story could continue for far too long but I feel like we've gotten to the top of the hill now and from this point on everything that happens is truly bringing us to the end.
You are going to get what you have come to love from Donna Grant in Firestorm, romance, action, bonds of family and friendship, suspense, mystery, and a little bit of angst. We still have a lot of questions to be answered. When is Ulrik going to take care of Mikkel? When will Ulrik confront Con? When will Balladyn confront Taraeth? What is going on with Con, does he have to be such an ass? What is V up to? When will Rhi find happiness? When will Rhi let all her bad ass out and just take over the world (lol)? Is Rhi going to fall in love with her Reaper? Is Rhi going to become a Reaper..or Death? Is Rhi going to fall in love with Balladyn? Who is Rhi's Dragon King.....so many more things to discover and I am really looking forward to getting all the answers, but guys I think we have a long way to go before we get there so hang in, it feels like with Firestorm we are on the way to discovering the answers!
~ HAPPY READING ~
