The Justice League. The Suicide Squad. DC Comic’s biggest and most recognizable super-groups being pitted against each other in a comic book miniseries written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Jason Fabok… This should be bloody good, right? I’ve already got my name down for a few comic reviews this week but I’m going to end up reading this anyway so I thought I’d review it whilst I was at it. So, Let’s find out what this book is like…

I’ve just finished reading it all the way through and damn, this book is cool... The story’s strong for an opening issue with this many big characters in and I was pleasantly surprised by that. These sorts of books tend to focus more on a handful of characters but I think it’s fair to say that everyone who’s supposed to be involved is actually involved and not just there to fill space on the page. I really liked it and I liked the fact that [honestly, I wish I could say what I want to say without spoiling the book] shows up in it. The second issue is going to be pretty interesting to say the least!

I really liked this for the fact Joshua Williamson is writing it, too. I’ve written some reviews about his work before and they haven’t been all that flattering towards him, but I’m happy to say that I was really into his writing here. It’s a great story so far, great dialogue and some great action scenes written into it. He’s really utilized the artist he has which is nice to see.

Speaking of art… I think the art in this issue is fucking great! Artist Jason Fabok for me is the epitome of what superhero comic art should look like. He’s a master in the superhero genre and I’d put him up there as one of this comic book reading generation’s best examples of how superhero comics should be drawn (shout out to Brett Booth. He’s another guy I’d put up there.) There’s some really nice panels in this book. Double-page spreads and splashes, all superhero hallmarks done to perfection by Fabok. Throw in Alex Sinclair on the colors and this is one of the best looking superhero comics out there. Fantastic work between the pair and a great end product that’s going to be a must-have for any DC Comics fan. I personally cannot wait to see some more of this series. It’s going to be epic!

Right, you’re going to want this book. Simple as that. It’s a great start to a series with great art and all your favorite characters from the DC Universe… Also: it’s a Miniseries, which I must say it’s really nice to see DC Comics doing more and more miniseries of late.

And finally… it’s only $3.99! Huzzah! [That other superhero publisher] is probably laughing right now at DC’s missed opportunity to slap a $5.99 price tag on this book (standard practice) but fuck them because even if this book WAS $5.99 I’d still buy it over one of their “team vs team” books (someone’s just pitched three more whilst I’ve been writing this) because it’s more than worth it.

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #1 is great and if you’re buying it, you’re getting some serious quality for your money here. I recommend you buy it.
