Impossible to put down, a pulse-pounding suspense thriller.
Audra is on the run with her two children -- away from an abusive ex -- when she is stopped on a desert road by a local sheriff. Hours later at the jail when Audra asks about her children, the sheriff tells her that she was alone in the car when he arrested her.
Audra is hysterical with fear and frustration when the FBI and the press get to town to interview her. They think she has killed her children! Meanwhile, the reader knows a little about what has happened and is turning the pages like crazy to find out what comes next!
Enjoyed the tension and the story line - Audra is a very strong woman and she is helped by the few people who believe her story. I'd definitely read another by this author and I recommend it.
Thank you to LibraryThing, NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC to read and review.

SUMMARY
Audra Kinney is on the run from an abusive husband. She is driving cross country with her two children Sean, 11 and Louise, 6. She and the kids are tired. They been driving for days and are ready to stop for the night. But she is being followed. Sheriff Whiteside stops Audra saying her car was overloaded and was therefore unsafe. He opens her trunk and ends up placing her under arrest for a small bag of marijuana. She says it's not hers. Whiteside calls Deputy Collins for back-up. He needs Collins to watch the kids while Audra goes to jail.
Once Audra get to the small-town jail in Silver Water Arizona, she continually ask Whiteside where her kids were taken. Whiteside replies "What kids?" He says he never saw any kids. If her kids are missing she must have done something to them. Whiteside calls in the FBI. No one believes her and no one will listen to her.
Danny Lee lives in San Francisco. Watching the news one night he hears the story about the missing kids. It sounds just like what had happened to his wife and daughter, five years earlier. Maybe this case would lead Danny to the men that took his daughter.
REVIEW
Gut wrenching! This book is absolutely gut wrenching. My fear is that this story is something that's really happening today. Missing children is a parents worst nightmare.
I started reading this book several days ago but had to stop. The "What kids?" statement was so horrendous I had to put the book down. I was to scared of what would happen next. But never one to quit on a book, I picked it up again yesterday and finished it at 2 AM. I couldn't put it down. I'm still thinking about it today. This woman had a bad reputation, no money, and no support. There was no one she could call for help. What would you do to get your kids back?
Audra is a wonderfully realistic character. She is weak and vulnerable and yet very strong in the face of adversity. There were so many great scenes in this book exhibiting these characteristics. Here and Gone is a fast-paced page turner with action, suspense and intrigue. The story has so many branches, all of which culminate to make this book interesting and complex. It's a book that will make you think. Love it.
The book is going to be a bestseller, maybe even a movie! If you love suspense thrillers you will love Here and Gone. It will be published in June 2017.
Thanks to Net Galley, Crown Publishing and Haylen Beck for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an intense action-packed thriller. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what happened to Sean and Louise. I liked Audra. I could feel her frustration, desperation and helplessness. Her husband and those cops made me so angry!
“Here and Gone” by Haylen Beck (pseudonym of author Stuart Neville) was a page turner that had me hooked after the first chapter. After suffering years of isolation, addiction, and abuse at the hands of her husband, Patrick, Audra Kinney took her children and moved into her own apartment. Eighteen months later, Children’s Services is intent on returning the kids to their father. Audra decides to leave New York City with eleven-year-old Sean and six-year-old Louise and head for southern California, hoping to start a new life where they are unlikely to be found.
Four days into the journey, they are traveling through rural Arizona. Audra makes a quick stop at a small roadside general store to get something to drink for her and the kids. After pulling in, she realizes too late that the only other vehicle in the parking lot is a police cruiser with an officer at the wheel. She doesn’t want to arouse suspicion by suddenly leaving, so she parks and goes inside to get the drinks while the children wait in the car. When she returns, the police cruiser is gone, and Audra breathes a sigh of relief. A few minutes after getting back on the road, she looks in her rear view mirror to see the same officer following her. When the cruiser lights go on, she pulls over, fearful that she is about to be charged with parental abduction. However, the officer tells her that her car is overloaded and is not safe to drive any further. He offers to put her stuff in the cruiser and take her and the kids to a guesthouse while a tow truck comes for her car. As he begins to transfer the family’s belongings, he finds a sizable baggie filled with marijuana. Audra denies knowing anything about it and fears that her husband is framing her. The officer handcuffs her, puts her in the back of the cruiser, and calls another officer to come pick up the children. Once the children are on their way to “a safe place,” he takes Audra to the police station, processes her, and locks her in a jail cell. When she asks him where her children were taken, he responds with, “What children?” and Audra’s worst nightmare begins to unfold.
This book covers the world of human trafficking, the seedy underside of the World Wide Web, and how people can be corrupted by the promise of large sums of money. Most frightening is the realization that something like this really could happen. I found myself on edge through the whole book with heart-pounding, blood-pressure-raising anxiety that kept me turning the pages to see if and how Audra would get Sean and Louse back. When I finally finished the book, I was oh-so-grateful that my own children are now adults. This was an amazing, thrilling read, well deserving of a five-star rating.
Thank you to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I could see this as a movie. Corrupt police department, stolen children, human trafficking, and impeccable characters. All of this is in this story. Audra is already on the run from an abusive husband when her children are kidnapped in a small town. I love the flow of this story, and the author did a great job shedding a light on human trafficking. Unputdownable!
This book was recommended by the Deweys and Divas and as mentioned, it is a page turner. Mystery, suspense make this a perfect weekend read.
I had a hard time getting into this book. I didn't particularly like Audra's character and how she reacted to various scenarios. Since I did not finish the book, I do not intend to publish a review.
Great book. Moved quickly, interesting, intrigue, action, suspense. Had it all,
A perfect thriller. An abused wife hastily packs up her two kids and flees her home, making a cross-country trek in a desperate search for safety. Along the way she stops for water and soda. A cop follows her out and arrests her on a drummed up charge. Another officer arrives to take her children to safety until she's out of jail, but as soon as the jail door is locked, the officers deny any knowledge of her children. It gets worse, she is then framed for harming them.
The premise is out of a parent's worst nightmare and the way that Beck carefully unwraps and reveals makes this book utterly un-put-downable. Well done.
It's been a long time since I lost so much sleep to keep reading. Not sure if it was the mom in me, or what. This story kept me wanting more from beginning to end! Bravo!
Audra Kinney with her children in tow; son Sean, eleven and daughter Louise, six, clutching stuffed bunny Gogo are on the run. Travelling from New York en route to new beginnings, the family stops at a roadside shop in the Arizona desert for drinks and snacks. Eighteen months ago, Audra had fled from abusive husband Patrick and is constantly looking over her shoulder. Patrick has now enlisted the help of Child Services in an attempt to obtain custody of both Sean and Louise. It is understandable that Audra is nervous when she notices a police vehicle parked at the roadside shop.
On the desolate Arizona road, Audra is followed and pulled over by Sheriff Robert Whiteside. He states that her car is overloaded, possibly causing it to veer out of control on the bumpy road. He insists upon carrying some of her possessions in his cruiser to the nearby town of Silver Water. While transferring boxes, Whiteside finds excessive amounts of marijuana in her vehicle and arrests her for possession. Deputy Collins will be called in to watch Sean and Louise while things are sorted out. He assures Audra that, "Everything will be alright". After being booked Audra asks the sheriff, "Where are my children?" His answer, "What children?" Audra's nightmare has begun.
Author Haylen Beck has created a tense, fast-paced thriller. From the get-go, the reader sympathizes with Audra, fearing for the safety of the children. Her uphill battle is wrought with continual accusations by her ex-husband, child services and law enforcement. "Here and Gone" is a gem of a thriller. It would play well on the big screen!
Thank you Crown Publishing and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review "Here and Gone".
I finished this read in hours. Excellent storytelling. Audra, a recovering addict seems an unlikely heroine but she is a dangerous mama bear. I loved how the author brings her strength to light. Danny also drew me in with his cunning and wit. But the hero, Sean, Audra's young son showed a grit and tenacity that made this story great. What a tale filled with twists and intrigue. I loved how the author tied everything up and gave a thrilling conclusion. Definitely kept me glued until the end.
A woman is traveling alone with her two children. She stops at a gas station and sees a Sheriff car and gets nervous. After she leaves the station, the police follows her and pulls her over. After that, this novel takes off at a steady pace, and I don't like to give too much away in a review. I enjoyed this one as gut wrenching as it was in several places. Thanks for the advanced copy, Net Galley!
It took me some time to get into this book. But once I did, I couldn't get enough. When reading any book, I always look for that character I can connect with. I was very happy to finally see a female character that is strong and relentless! It was a great storyline, although the ending left me wanting more of a resolution. I would definitely recommend this book!
Thank you to Netgalley and Crown Publishing for the advanced copy of Here and Gone. Thank you to Haylen Beck for a great story. I really enjoyed Here and Gone. I was hooked from the first page until the last.
Easy read that keeps your interest. Connected to the characters. Would definitely read more from this author.
This book grabbed me from the start and I couldn't put it down! I stayed up all night and day until I finished it!
It's riveting, horrifying and yet totally believable. It is totally twisted!
Thank goodness it had a satisfying ending!
I'm going to be looking for more exciting books from Hayley Beck!
Here and Gone, due out for publication in July 2017, is the first book I've read by author Haylen Beck.
Audra Kinney is four days into a cross country driving trip from New York to California with her two children -- ten year old Sean and seven year old Louise --when she is stopped by the local sheriff just outside a small Arizona desert town. She has left a bad marriage 18 months before and is trying to stay one step ahead of her wealthy and abusive husband. When the sheriff unlawfully searches her trunk and "finds" marijuana (a set up), she is arrested. The sheriff coordinates with his deputy to take her children to a safe place. Audra objects right from the beginning and her instincts are borne out when shortly after she is processed and jailed, the sheriff makes the unthinkable statement that there were no children in the car. She is later accused of harming the children and being responsible for their disappearance. It is like the worse nightmare imaginable.
I enjoyed every minute of this book. The characters were convincingly drawn, the plot completely engrossing. I hated the villains, rooted for the victims, and turned the pages faster and faster as the story raced to its conclusion. My only comment, although it is minor, is that I would have liked to know a little more about what happened to the secondary character Danny and his search for his own daughter at the end of the book.
Haylen Beck is apparently a pseudonym for the Edger-nominated author Stuart Neville. I will certainly be seeking out more of this author's books, under whatever name they are published, and definitely recommend this novel without reservation.
Thank you to NetGalley and Crown Publishing for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
