A typical book by Beverly Lewis. You start and you can't stop. She takes you by the hand through the story as if it's your own. If you love Amish books. This is the ONE for you to read. I do hope it will be translate to Dutch very soon, so my readers of my blog who do not speak English can read this lovely book as well.
Ebb Tide is the time when the sea level falls, and the shore is revealed. In life, an opportunity arises where our hearts and desires are revealed and with patience and faith we wait to see what miracle can happen.
Sallie has always been curious. As an Amish young woman, she has put off her baptism to travel to Australia, however when a need a arises, she sacrifices her trip for something better. It is those times of sacrifices, we find other God-opportunities.
A young English family has requested that Sallie come with them to nanny their young daughter in their vacation home in the East Coast. Sallie is very drawn to this English family and with her parents consent and a conflicted heart, she sets out for another adventure that replaced her Australian adventure she had since she first read about Austria as a young girl.
On a visit to the beach, she meets Kevin who is a student studying to be biologist. They have more in common than first realized. Kevin's mother came from Amish upbringing and Kevin feels a strong attraction to Sallie in her upbringing and the simplified life. Sallie is attracted to Kevin in that he represents her desire to know the glorious world that God has made. Their relationship starts as friends as they both discover a different worlds.
I loved the intertwining stories in this one. The family Sallie was caring for and their needs. The tension of remaining in the Amish community and what attracts others to the simple life of very little distractions. It was all brought together as the relationship between Kevin and Sallie grew. It also taught you about the why of some Amish culture that I had not read before.
A Special Thank You to Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
The Ebb Tide" by Beverly Lewis follows Sallie, and adventurous Amish girl, who dreams of traveling and seeing the world. Since she has yet to join the church she takes a job being a nanny to a young family at Cape May, where she can at last see the ocean. The only stipulation is that she must start baptism classes when she returns. While at Cape May, she meets Kevin. Kevin is a student studying the marine life and also a Mennonite with Amish relatives. Therefore, they have a connection as well as a lot in common. Sallie begins an inward struggle of where her heart lies, not only with her romance, but also her lifestyle and her spiritual relationship with God.
I thought this book was wonderful. It is a quick read and well written. It isn't steeped into Amish stereotypes, but treats Sallie like a modern woman who is on the edge of making a life-altering decision. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Bethany House.
Have you ever planned for something and when it is within your reach you sacrifice that plan to give to some one else. That is what Sallie Riehl goes through in the Ebb Tide. She has been saving her money to go on a trip overseas and when she finally is able to get the money together she has a calling on her heart to give the money to a family member to cover medical treatments. One of Sallie's patrons come into the restaurant that she works at and ask Sally to be their nanny for 2 months in Cape May. Unsure if her parents will agree to this she, they relent with the promise that she will join the church the following year.
Being Autumns nanny is an adventure in itself. Autumn loves to talk, knows just about everyone in Cape May and is having a hard time adjusting to her baby brother. During this time Sallie meets Kevin and learns that he has distant Amish relatives. Their friendship progresses but Sallie knows that it can go no where. Will there be a relationship for Sallie and Kevin? Will Autumn finally accept her brother. You must read this book. It was a book that will make you laugh and shed a tear or two.
Beverly Lewis has been one of my long time favorite authors, so being able to read and review this book in exchange for my honest opinion is a huge honor for me! I won't sit here and type out so you have to read how honored I am over this, so let's get to the book review! Amish set books are some of my favorites to read! I love being able to invision how they live! I've said before it interests me, and I'll say it over and over! Could I do it? I don't think so, but I do think it would make things so much easier! This Amish set book is different than others that I have read, as our main character, Sallie is wanderlust, meaning she wants to explore before she joins the church and gives herself to her Amish Community 100%. She had plans to go on a trip to Australia, and while that fell through, she did get invited on another trip! One where she could Nanny for 9 year old Autumn on the coast of New Jersey. Of course, since she wants to widen her horizens and knowledge about places other than Lancaster County, PA, she jumps on the chance! While on her trip for the summer, she meets a Mennonite Man who she becomes friends with. Should she continue this friendship because they are of different faith? She has put herself in a dilemma but was she wrong or right about this? Read the book to find out! Thank you to NetGalley and Bethany House Publishing for allowing me to read this book!
The Ebb Tide is a book I almost passed up on, but I'm so glad I didn't! I love Beverly Lewis, she is very down to earth and knows so much about the Amish and their culture. I almost passed up on this book because I had trouble with the pace of her more recent stories. I felt they were slow and I had trouble getting into them.
I decided to give The Ebb Tide a chance and this story was the type I remember Beverly writing and what I have been waiting for from her!
I found the pace of this book to be perfect! It kept moving, yet allowed me to connect with the characters and get to know them. While I loved the story, I was disappointed the first trip didn't go as planed. I was really looking forward to reading about that. Maybe some time Beverly can write about that.
I found the concept of this story to be interesting. It reminded me a little of the Hawaiian Quilt by Wanda Brunstetter because of the beach theme, yet the story was totally different.
I really enjoyed this story and that I was able to connect with the characters. Beverly wrote in a way that transported me into the story. I could feel the frustration in Sallie's mom over her baptism. I felt the struggle Sallie had wanting to please her family, yet wanting to follow her dreams at the same time.
I'm so glad I gave this book a chance and I'm excited for what Beverly has next!

I have loved Beverly Lewis books for a long time and was excited to have the opportunity to read another. First off, she always writes beautifully, but also keeps true to Amish behavior and traditions. I don't have to question what she's written because I know she checks with Amish friends for accuracy and realism.
This story was not your traditional Amish story. The main character struggles with traveling, seeing the world, but still stating that she'll stay Amish and take baptismal classes once she's travelled. I enjoyed the storyline and the writing, however I struggled with the way Sallie's character seemed to be wishy washy in her thinking. One minute she was set to stay Amish and just enjoy this one experience and the next minute it seemed like she was going to leave. I would have liked it better had she just had one feeling more than the other through the whole book.
Overall the story was good, especially for Beverly Lewis fans. She did a great job in balancing the scenes between Sallie and Perry, and Sallie and Kevin. I did like how that love triangle worked out in the end. Here's the important lesson we can learn from this book is if God is leading you to do something, it's best to listen even if it goes against the norm surrounding you. He has a plan!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another great story by Lewis. Those new to Amish fiction will want to add her and those who have standing collections will have a new one to recommend.
The Ebb Tide is a new Amish novel by author Beverly Lewis. Sallie Riehl is just shy of twenty years old and lives with her family in Paradise Township, Pennsylvania. Sallie has yet to join the Old Order Amish community, because she has dreamed of traveling for years. Her goal is a trip to Australia, and she has finally saved up enough money. Sallie purchases her trip and announces to her family that she will be leaving in two weeks. The Riehl family receives news that Aaron, Sallie’s four years old newphew, has a heart murmurer. He needs tests and possibly surgery. Vernon, Aaron’s father and Sallie’s brother, is worried about the costs. Sallie knows what she most due and cancels her trip. The money is put towards Aaron’s tests. But when God closes a door, he opens a window. Sallie is asked to be a nanny for the summer for young Autumn Logan in Cape May, New Jersey. This will be Sallie’s chance to travel. It would mean, though, putting off her baptism instruction classes for another year (much to her mother’s dismay). Sallie’s parents agree, and she is quickly off to the seashore. Sallie takes Autumn to visit the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center and meets intern, Kevin Kreider. Kevin is studying to be a marine biologist and is a Mennonite. Kevin and Sallie start spending time together. Sallie knows she can only be friends with Kevin, but she greatly enjoys his company. At the end of the summer, Sallie returns home. But she is not content upon her return. Sallie needs to reflect and decide what she wants for her future.
The Ebb Tide is a well-written and engaging novel. I liked the characters and the setting. Cape May sounds just beautiful. I felt that the book had a good flow and was well-paced. The religious aspect of the novel is not as light as in other Amish novels, but it is not dominant or overwhelming. We are shown how prayer, love, faith and reflection can help (benefit) a person’s life and those around them. I appreciated that the author included an epilogue that nicely wrapped up the story. I give The Ebb Tide 4 out of 5 stars. I found The Ebb Tide to be a lovely novel. It is a nice break from what is going on in the world. I did feel that it was a little too long, but, otherwise, I liked it. I look forward to reading the next Beverly Lewis novel when it releases.
I received this book from Bethany House Publishers to read and review for free. I have read a few books from Beverly Lewis. This book by far is the best one yet. Ms. Lewis writing makes you feel like you are part of the story and you can relate to the struggles that Sallie has. And I love how the author goes in detail about how Sallie decision shaped who she was and that sometimes the things that are excepted of you are necessarily the best thing for you. And that sometimes you have to go against the grain to be happy. I like how the struggle between Perry and Kevin. How she made the ultimate sacrifice so she could save a life. I like how Ms Lewis took a different approach about the struggles that the Amish have before baptism This is a must read for any book lover.
A very different Amish book as our main character has wanderlust, and was surprised her family was going to allow it, although she promises for sure she will join the Church next year.
While she does forgo one trip another seems to fall in her lap, and a life change is about to happen. She is going to Cape May NJ and becoming a nanny. Now that sounds like a fun job and time to me, and she sure does have a lot of adventures, which we are going to enjoy with her.
After all of this will she be able to come home and bend her knee, and maybe join the young man who seems to want to court her. Or will the adventure be the catalysis to leave her faith, one would hope not. We do meet her family and extended family, and she is mightily blessed to have so much support.
A fun read that is full of interesting information, it made me want to head to New Jersey. Enjoy your stay with Riehl family and friends.
I received this book through Net Galley and Bethany House Publishing and was not required to give a positive review.
The Ebb Tide by Beverly Lewis is a sweet Christian tale. A young Amish woman has had a heart for traveling the world in which God created. Her family wishes to see her baptized as an Amaish soon, but they start realizing it may not be what is good for their daughter. Sallie has a good Amish man back home who cares about her...yet her heart is constantly drifting back to Kevin. His family is Mennonite, not Amish. Sallie never once gives up trying to be a good Amish woman. She tries her best. But her heart is being pulled into another direction. Kevin and exploring the world. Beverly Lewis's novel is heartfelt. The words carry a deep meaning and captivate me as I went through them. I felt sad and then happy for Sallie. Despite what our families want for us, we have to go find what it is that we want. Happiness is by falling our hearts. A deep and beautifully told story. The Ebb Tide is one that I recommend to readers worldwide. It's relates to everything we all go through...each day. Finding ourselves.
You can't go too wrong reading a Beverly Lewis book, can you? This was true to form. It was an amazing read and I loved it. I was quite sorry to see it end.
This book brought out the feelings that everyone needs to find their path in life, follow the road that God has led them to. Not all of us our the same even within religious circles.
Sallie is somewhat restless and not the "typical" Amish woman. She wants more, although she tries her hardest to conform, it's a trial for her and as life opens up opportunities for her, she longs to explore where they may lead her.
It was a great book! I am so glad I was able to read this!
I received an ebook copy from NetGalley for my honest review. All thoughts are my own.
