A fun little read of sex and light hearted fun! This is the pulp art and stories that was hidden in the pages of high brow sex magazines of the past. More fun and exciting than the actual photos. A terrific little read.
A winning combination of lighthearted silliness and hardcore sex. Unlike a lot of erotic comics, it is focused on enthusiastic consent (rather than smarmy "seduction") and genuine enjoyment of female pleasure. The characters are constantly aroused and looking for sex, but they are never once made to feel wrong for wanting sex often or for having it with multiple partners. There is real joy in these stories, something I don't generally find in most mainstream erotica.
(I read all 3 volumes as they were divided on Netgalley)
All power to this masterpiece of erotica. From an artist I doubt I've ever come across (oo-er) comes a silly premise (woman told to stop w**king, so gets a conscience – and the two, woman and conscience, do nothing but ravage each other, the end) but a great fun spirit. Suitable for both genders, but perhaps talking more to the female one, this is a brilliant book, and one well worth resurrecting.
Small Favors was a surprise, in every aspect. From the moment I saw it on NetGalley I was impressed by what it had to offer. Both the idea behind this graphic novel, and the art featured are amazing. It's funny and at moments touching, but what it is most of is original. I really liked the style of the art which seemed almost innocent, despite the nature of the storyline.
Note: I do recommend this read, but please bear in mind that it's 18+.
I never thought that I'd be into a lesbian porno graphic novel but Small Favors is terribly charming and sex positive that you can't help falling in love. There are several stories, some just a couple of pages long, but it always ends up with everybody having sex. There's not much in terms of plot and the one main arc is that Nibbil is Annie's conscience in humanoid form, supposedly to keep Annie from masturbating all the damn time but she turned out to be a companion and enabler. This was unexpected!
sorry I was unable to view this book so I was unable to read and review
I wish the description had made it more clear that this was a F/F comic. I was disappointed that this story included no other kind of interactions.
What Small Favors lacks in storytelling, it more than makes up for in charm and joy. Freed completely from any patriarchal restraints whatsoever, what we have is a series of short vignettes that have one goal in mind: find reasons to think about, talk about, and especially perform various sexual acts. It's cute as hell for porn though I wish it explored the emotional side as well as the it does so completely for the physical.
Story: Annie is daydreaming of her cute neighbor again while masturbating - when her conscience appears and tells her she will get a 'minder' to make sure she spends less time with sex. Fortunately for Annie, her minder just wants to have sex all the time as well - and with her small size, the two get into all kinds of 'situations' together that lead to mutual enjoyment.
There's not much to say about Small Favors - I certainly don't want to psycho-analyze the plot since it really is fluffy and should be viewed that way. The drawings are clean - reminiscent of the Archies and that era. The book is black and white with no color. Yes, it is very explicit - this is rightly titled porn and not erotica. But the love the author put into creating this is evident and I loved seeing porn from a female viewpoint and with uninhibited charm. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
Small Favors is a graphic novel about a woman, her conscience, and her crush on the woman next door. Sexually explicit, funny, and oddly touching at times, our introverted main character deals with her extroverted conscience Nibble and spends a lot of time without having any apparent means of supporting herself. Basically, it's lesbian pornography in a graphic novel.
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but Small Favors was a surprise. Definitely for an adult audience, but it was a fun read. I was actually surprised by how much I liked the short vignettes. While the art wasn't over the top, it was well done. I am glad I got outside my comfort zone to try something new.
Can't get this on my kindle. Wish there would have been a note before I was approved.
This was uh.. not what I expected... It was super super SUPER raunchy. Like Porn raunchy. I'm all for porn by women for women, but this was a bit too much for me.
This was a quite cute graphic novel even though it's porn. I really like it.
It certanly is for adult audience only!

While not what I meant to pick, a nicely drawn erotic graphic novel.
I haven't reviewed a Net Galley graphic novel in a while, but there hasn't been much come up which has interested me. In their latest flyer this was the only one that I thought might be worth my time, and in the end I wasn't quite sure of that to begin with. I was won over by the playfulness and sheer exuberance of the stories. As I intimated, this is an advance review copy for which I thank the publishers.
I wasn't at all familiar with Colleen Coover's work, but I am now! Note that this isn't all she does, because when I tell you this is a graphic graphic novel for adult-only audiences which features explicit and what many might consider even kinky sex, you might wonder where she's coming from. Well, I can't speak or her, but for her characters, it's obvious where they're coming from!
The comic is a series of stories, with mini-stories interleaved, and separate by title pages which are done in grey-scale. Nearly all of the art is black and white line drawings which for me were charming and well done. I enjoyed them so much that I had some trouble adapting to the color section which is contained towards the middle. It felt really odd after I'd become so comfortable with the original artwork, but it wasn't bad at all - the line work was the same and the coloring was nicely done.
The inventive tack taken here is that main character Annie is called onto the mat by her conscience for excessive masturbating. Apparently at the age of twenty-one, she's already used up her lifetime allotment of "sexual self-abuse" as it used to be termed. I confess I never knew there was one!
A part of her conscience named Nibbil (which is misspelled Nibble at one point in the comic) is assigned to her twenty-four-seven to keep her on the straight and narrow, but this only results in her avidly exploring the bent and wide, since Nibbil is at least as big of a nymphomaniac as Annie. Happily, the two fall in love, but this doesn't prevent them exploring their sexuality with others. One thing I really did like about this was the brief interludes. No, this is not about girls wearing briefs and being lewd, it's a series of mini stories scattered through the main collection. How to spank Girls was hilarious.
The obvious candidate would seem to be Annie's next door, and single, neighbor, a young Asian woman about whom Annie fantasizes daily, but this doesn't happen (not immediately!). Instead they encounter another lesbian who is feeling lonely, an African American woman named sage. Soon the three of them are bosom buddies - in every sense of the phrase. This sparks a whole new set of stories. The sweet thing about this is the love between Annie and Nibbil, which is never lost sight of, no matter what adventures they get into.
The stories were for the most part highly amusing, such as when they play doctors which I thought was funny, as was the jungle adventure fantasy in which Annie and Nibbil take part, but be warned that every one of the stories is focused on sex. Even a trip to a yard sale ends up with them nude and passionate. They really have no life that doesn't involve sex!
Some potential fans might find that a turn off since there really isn't much story here. Others might find it a bit repetitive. I might have classed myself in those groups if the stories had not been so playful, unabashed, amusing, enthusiastic, and yes, even innocent in a weird, juvenile, exploratory way. The characters are all so likable and passionate, particularly Annie and Nibbil, that you can't help but appreciate them.
I have to mention that safe sex was not a concept here, which I found sad. Admittedly when having sex with the embodiment of her conscience, Nibbil, this wasn't an issue, but when they began to involve Sage and others, then at least a nod and a wink towards hygiene and safe sex needs to be in there, no matter how fleeting. There's nothing wrong with adventurous sex, but adventurous sex with multiple partners carries baggage that is neither erotic nor fun and which can be at best debilitating and at worst, deadly. Adventurous sex means trusting your partner(s), and this means informed consent and responsible sex. It's by no means incompatible with being erotic, and I think it's sad that more writers don't get this.
That said, I did like these comic stories. I really appreciated the author's sensibility about how the tales should be told. I think she got the tone right, and I consider them a worthy read for anyone who is interested in erotica in the comics.
This book did not make me blush. It actually left me cold and a bit confused. Much of the sex takes place between a grown woman and a miniature woman- not sure what the mini is supposed to be. Since it was written by a woman, I expected it to have I dunno, maybe more grown up sex. If you think a vibrator that is really a miniature woman sounds great, this is for you. Or if someone saying vroom vroom - as opposed to faster faster, it is for you, or if you just want to read about very vocal people, definitely for you. For me... just not grown up enough.
I was curious to read this book as soon as I saw it in Netgalley and it was fun, though it wasn't sexy enough for me. The illustrations were great and the sex addicts theme was really cool, sadly I'm not interested enough to read the rest of the series. Please note that the F/F genre isn't my favorite, but it could be yours.
Lively, charming and diverse, with an art style that makes me think of Jaime Hernandez crossed with the classic newspaper cartoon strips. But just to be clear on the key detail: when the cover describes it as 'girly porno', it isn't kidding. I saw Netgalley had this and figured, she co-wrote an Adventure Time comic, it's from Oni, how hardcore can it be? Surely that's just a wry title for something which, at most, will be risque along the lines of Sunstone or similar. Well, no. It's absolute filth. Probably contains fewer pages with the protagonists fully dressed than Lost Girls. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it's just not the sort of thing I'd necessarily review as a rule, if I didn't owe Netgalley some feedback. Because while any review is by definition subjective, some are more subjective than others, and if there's one thing more subjective than whether comedy is funny or not, it's whether porn is hot or not. So: if you like polymorphously* perverse girl-girl(/-girl(/-girl)) action, with no pretence at a message beyond 'Sex is fun, so why not, eh?', which dodges any risk of male gaze through coming from a female writer-artist, you'll probably like this. If not, it really isn't for you.
*Assuming that term is still appropriate if someone is changing size rather than shape. Close enough, I think.
