This got off to a very slow start, for me. The description calls the magic system unique. It is, but that's also going to require some explanation fairly quickly. I have no idea what each different ability does or how the magic system works. I also have no idea who the tribes are, what everyone is fighting over, the religious system, who the different groups of people are, or even where anything is located in this world. There's a lot going on and very little explanation as to the motivation or background for any of these people or events. I don't want an info dump at the beginning of a novel, but I do need some information to hold my attention. Almost 200 pages in I still felt like I was being left out of the loop and wasn't invested enough to finish another 2/3 of this book. This just wasn't a book for me, which is unfortunate because the description sounded intriguing.
