This is the second book in Suzanne Enoch’s No Ordinary Hero series and I enjoyed it more than the first. It is a wonderful story with lots of humor and romance.

The heroine, Marjorie Forrester, is tired of London. When her soldier brother, Gabriel, inherits a dukedom and moves to Scotland he leaves her the mansion in London. But the “ton” doesn’t accept a former companion as a lady and she is lonely. Upon hearing Gabriel is to be wed, she and her companion, Hortensia, head for Scotland. While stopping at an inn near her brother’s property she is kidnapped.

Laird Graeme Maxton is raising his 3 younger brothers without much money. They decide to help him by kidnapping Lady Marjorie. The older 2 boys think their clan chief, who hates her brother, will pay well for her. Graeme decides to keep her until he can figure out how to return her without his brothers getting in more trouble. And then the fun starts. Hortensia may also find romance in the Highlands.

I especially love 8 year old Connell who rescues orphaned animals. He’ll steal your heart and I hope he gets a HEA when he’s grown. This book is a keeper that I’ll re-read. Honestly, who wouldn’t love a gorgeous man in a kilt caring for his younger brothers?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me this ARC. Release date is April 4th

I loved this book - I think even more than I loved the first book!

Graeme is a chieftain of the Maxwell clan and his property borders Lattimer's (Hero in the Highlands). Graeme is not happy with his overlord, but needs the protection of the Duke for his small holding. When Graeme's younger brothers kidnap Lattimer's sister Marjorie - he is torn. He can't afford to let her go to her brother but neither can he turn her over to the Duke. There is also the small matter of what will happen if the Duke finds out who she is and that Graeme didn't turn her over to him. What's a Laird to do? Why marry the lass! Easier said than done!!

Marjorie aka Ree is Lattimer's younger sister. After Lattimer inherited the dukedom and gave her the London townhouse, she has been desperately trying to fit in with the ton and failing. When her brother writes that he is going to marry, Ree impulsively decides to attend his wedding. She sets off for Scotland with her very proper companion and is promptly kidnapped by highland barbarians!

When Graeme says that he will marry her - Ree is horrified and refuses.

Both Graeme and Ree have preconceived notions about the other and slowly begin to realize that those notions are wrong. And they begin to fall in love.

I highly recommend this book, the story is well written, flows nicely, has wonderful secondary characters, some laugh out loud moments, some steamy moments, some nail biting moments and finally a fantastic HEA.

This is the second book in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title.

It has been a while since I have read a book by this author and I truly enjoyed this book. Graeme and Marjorie were made for each other. I enjoyed their interaction. I loved Connell's kind heart and innocence. I would like to hear more about Mrs. Giswell and the blacksmith.

My One True Highlander by Suzanne Enoch Review

⭐⭐

This title wasn't really my cup of tea, but I did enjoy the beginning.

Marjorie Forrester is a recent woman of means intent on traveling to Scotland to visit her brother and attend his wedding. Graeme is a highlander trying to take care of his younger brothers, keep their home, and keep from angering their clan chieftain. When his brothers kidnap Ree, Graeme believes the only alternative is for him to marry Ree.

Honestly, the best part of the book is the beginning. I was fully invested after Ree's kidnapping and was looking forward to watching them get to know each other and become attracted to each other. This doesn't really happen. They're not attracted to each other one day and the next they are. For no real reason, either. I can't tell you what one liked about the other.

After the initial kidnapping, not much else happens. There was an opportunity here to have a lot happen but Ree only really makes one attempt at escape before deciding to lie for Graeme and his brothers. It just wasn't very realistic.

I didn't read the first book in this series and felt quite lost at first with all the names being thrown around but I figured it out soon enough.

Enoch spells out the accents every time a Highlander speaks so if that's not your thing, you might want to steer clear.

I did find the beginning of the book to be very engaging, and I really found myself wondering who the next book would be about. I'll probably give it a chance and see if it's a little more to my taste.

I was enchanted by this story of two people whose self-realizations bring them to a great understanding of love. It is rich with history. The scene at the fair with the pipers actually gave me chills it was so expertly painted in Suzanne Enoch's words. There is humor, tenderness, suspense and a dramatic resolution. Other than the graphic sex (that I just skipped over) I loved it!

This book was so much fun!!!

<i> ...not exactly like this, but I coulnd't resist... LOL</i>

This is essentially a story from enemies to lovers, but it is marvelously done! Usually I find annoying if there're many instances of inner musings, but here they were planty but excellent.
They were somewhere between endearing, hilarious and serious. What an excellent mix!!!!

I loved Graeme and his honour! He's desperately trying to do the right thing, but his <i>opponents</i> are his brothers and the woman they've kidnapped! If he could he would have run away screaming and pulling his heir out! LMAOOO

Marjorie is wonderful too! A governess unexpectedly truned lady, she's been kidnapped by three boys and delivered to a bevildered Graeme to secure the wellbeing of his clan!

But Marjorie is not a wilting flower! She's intelligent and has her way with words! When Graeme confronts her, imprison her and chains her to the bed she lashes out and evey time it happens Graeme is more and more confused! LOL

Marjorie is not only good with words, she's smart and resourceful! And Graeme goes from wanting to throttle her to wanting something else entirely! *wink*

There are also some excellent secondary characters like Connell, the duckling, the youngest of Graeme brothers; but also the other two: hotheaded Brendan and levelheaded Dughlas.

Also Marjorie's companion Hortensia: a lady's companion who has already made a mess with another change and fights tooth and nail to make of Marjorie a success to redeem herself in her role!

Not to forget some less important, but not for that less fun characters: like the butler or the smith (who's smitten by Hortensia)!!!

The plot is not overly complicated, but the resolution of problems is fun and very, very entertaining! I loved every page!

This is a sweet story with likable protagonists and supporting characters, which allows me to forgive some of the plot deficiencies. I have to say, I am rather partial to the name Maxton, having a little tyke of my own by this name. And the Laird Maxton certainly lives up to the name, with strength, fortitude, and yet gentleness in his dealings with his brothers and Marjorie. The newly titled Lady Marjorie's is a force to be reckoned with, once she escaped the strict expectations and dictates of society. Her inner dialogue is quite amusing and well-written. I love the brotherly love and I especially adore Connell, the youngest Maxton brother, a compulsive collector of lost orphaned animals and a delightful blend of innocence and mischief. One of my pet-hates is when children are portrayed as abnormally precocious in books, 5 year old spouting words of wisdoms rivalling Confucius or dishing out relationship advice and observations like the best shrink money can hire. Connell is just scene-stealing and genuine.

Sweet little romance in the highlands. After being thrown together Marjorie and Graeme have to make do and find a solution to thir big issue (mainly his much younger brothers captured her in order to solve some problems with other clans and made, instead, a real mess of things in poor Graeme's life).
As I said this was cute and all ended well. Not exactly the read of the year though.

What would a lady be doing as a companion?

Easy, boys. You won't help your brother if you go to jail for killing a clan chief.

I'd have fired Mrs. Giswell after the first day, just to get some peace.

Connell is adorable, by the way.

Someone really needs to find a way to get rid of Hamish.

That was a good speech! That took balls, girl.

Suzanne Enoch's highlanders are usually not real highlanders. They were mere shadows of their ancestors, the "tamed" version, so to speak. One could look at Suzanne Enoch's "highlander stories" almost as regency stories, just featuring Scottish heroes or heroines. Think ballgowns with a brogue.

The above is true for this book as well. I have read most of her famous "Scandalous Highlanders" series and only liked the first book. This book reads almost like the old series but honestly if it was done well, I would not have minded. This book is better than the first book in the series in my eyes because this heroine isn't as stupid as the heroine in the first book. Marjorie was the sister of the hero from the first book, she was abducted by the hero's younger brothers on her way to her brother's wedding. Graeme was trying to be Scottish in a Scotland that was very much under English influence. Like all Enoch's Scottish heroes, he was trying desperately to hold on to his ancestors' heritage without much success. His (really) young brothers thought abducting Marjorie would help him and the family. So Graeme and Marjorie ended up together in Graeme's house.

The thing about this book is, not much happened. At 40% to 50% Graeme and Marjorie were still just snapping at each other without having had much interaction. The attraction was not there. But it was written so that they were attracted to each other. I did not feel it. Graeme proposed thinking that it would save his family from being hanged because that was the only way he could think of to get Marjorie on their side. Marjorie, the indignant abducted heroine of course refused profusely. Then boom they had sex, just like that. I was asking myself whaaaaaaat? Enoch's heroines are all some kind of a light skirt, I have to say. They fall into bed with men way too easily without ever considering the ramification of their actions. I find that extremely unlikely for noble women of that time to just do away with their virginity without a thought.

Overall the story is unremarkable. But Enoch writes a fluid story so it is readable. I went through the book absent-mindedly because that is all you need for books like this. One highlight is Graeme's youngest brother. He was quite a delight but I have seen Enoch do it in other books. It seems to be a mechanism she uses to entice readers. Once you notice the pattern, such innocence loses its appeal as well.

Lovely romance with two great characters. Loved the family dynamics. It also had funny moments that made me this even more. Looking forward to book 3 next year

My One True Highlander by Suzanne Enoch is simply fantastic! Ms Enoch has delivered a well-written book that is loaded with amazing characters. Even the secondary characters were entertaining and just a delight to read. Graeme and Marjorie's story is fast-paced and kept me glued to my kindle. This entertaining book has plenty of drama, suspense, laugh out loud humor and just the right amount of sizzle. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Suzanne Enoch in the near future. My One True Highlander is book 2 in the No Ordinary Hero Series but can be read as a standalone. (I also happened to read book 1, Hero In The Highlands, and it's a great read also.) This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.

enjoyable read

This book is cleverly written, and is full of witty, fun conversation. I enjoyed the banter between Graeme .and tthe woman who steals his heart, Marjorie. The book starts out with a kidnapping but ends with a sumptuous happily ever after. I have not read Enoch's books before. And while this book is perfectly fine as a stand alone, I would have gotten even more out of it, had I read one prior to it -- I would have better understood the political climate and the fabric of the society around these characters..

Her details are amazing. Her characters are so fully written that you almost know them. The book is artful, creative, and witty. Loved it!

As usual I Suzanne Enoch wrote another amazing book. I have really loved this series. I loved Graeme and Marjorie and I especially loved Connell and all his orphaned animals. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I loved the tale of Marjorie Forrester's trip to the Scottish Highlands. She left for Scotland as oon as her brother wrote of his upcoming marriage, she was miserable in London because the 'ton' had not been friendly at all, the only interested parties were men after her money....and not many of them.
Her brother, Gabriel a army Major, recently became the Duke of Latimer, and went to his estate in Scotland....right in the sights of the chief of the clan Maxwell, who wants his land....badly.
Graeme, Viscount Maxton is only trying to raise his brothers and help his crofters survive, unfortunately his brothers tried to help...by kidnapping Marjorie, hoping to win favor with the clan chief by giving him leverage against Gabriel.
Starting a humorous and hotly sexy relationship between Gabriel and Marjorie, with more humor supplied by her companion, Mrs. Giswell and the Scottish blacksmith who fell hard for Hermione.
Ms. Enoch's descriptions of the places and the people are enchanting and I was at the end of the book long before I was ready to leave.
This is a must read for any historical romance fan.
I requested the ARC from Netgalley and was thrilled to receive it!

I have greatly enjoyed a number of this author's works. This was another good, but at times frustrating story. The H is an admirable, caring Highlander, forced by circumstances to raise his younger brothers and manage a difficult estate. The h is a newly titled Lady, trying to fit into the somewhat cruel world of the ton, as her brother is a newly titled Duke. He is to be wed, and she elects to head to the Highlands unannounced for his wedding. His younger brothers kidnap her, unknown to him, and the romance ensues, but in sputters. The attraction is there, but who wants to be attracted to their captor, or their victim? Add in an adorable 8 year old boy, who rescues every animal he sees, also wears a kilt on occasion and is beyond adorable, as well as a lady's companion who is searching the Highlands for her., and difficult Highland relatives and you have our story. The relationship between the H and h is dynamic and interesting, the story new and refreshing, with my requisite HEA. Very well written characters and romantic story.

<i>When a cloth went over her mouth she wasn't surprised, but she was furious. A woman should never be kidnapped once -- much less twice.</i>

While I had not come across Enoch's books in my fairly recent but ever-growing love for historical romances, when I saw that this particular plot featured a strapping highlander and a kidnapped englishwomen, I couldn't resist dipping my toe into MY ONE TRUE HIGHLANDER.

And one toe eventually became my whole foot, leg.. well, you get the idea. I fell right into this story.

Enoch's writing is wonderful. Beautiful, clever; the woman turns a good phrase. While the story itself, which picks up after book one -- which I've yet to read -- might not be anything new, it was highly enjoyable. The characters, specifically Graeme's younger brothers, were so so wonderful. I fell in love with them from their first introduction; from Brendan's surly teenager attitude, to Dughlas' wry peacekeeping, to Connell's utter sweetness in rescuing and bringing home every stray animal he can find.

"<i>Stop teasing Connell. He likes the Sassenach, and ye ken the duckling has a soft heart.</i>"
"<b>I dunnae have a soft heart, I have a big heart!</b>"

But for all the plot might feel familiar, the characters had some unique and added dimension to them, specifically our heroine and some of the secondary personalities. Marjorie's life was far from straight forward, having not been far along in life before losing her parents, forcing her older brother to enlist in order to help provide her an education, only to suddenly -- years later -- both inherit from a distant relative they hadn't even known.. and become a Duke and a duke's sister. But wealth and respect does not necessarily garner friendships and acceptance into society.

<i>As a girl she'd dreamed of being a great lady, of men who tipped their hats and bowed at the very sight of her. Abruptly she <b>was</b> that lady, only to discover now that the deference of others could evidently be purchased.

[..]

Not for the first time, she wondered if fitting in with the aristocracy was worth the effort.</i>

Graeme, conversely, knows his place in life. He is older brother, and parent, to his much younger siblings after the death of his own parents.. one loss being rather shocking and heartbreaking. He is a chieftain, responsible for his household, the cotters, the land. And has vowed to not love after the devastation left in the wake of his parents. So when the sister to the Duke who has since taken over the neighbouring Scottish lands falls in his lap, providing him the opportunity to pay dues owed to the Maxwell Laird, he is tempted. But by more than what she can buy him back. Between the attraction, the risk, being unwilling to bend to knee to the Laird, and wanting to discover why Marjorie is unlike any Sassenach he thought she'd be, well.. he decides to keep her around a little longer for himself.

"<i>Ye should only marry her if ye're in love with her,</i>" Connell said, with all the conviction his eight years gave him. "<i>And ye've only known her a day. What if she doesnae like cats?</i>"

While I enjoyed their banter and the early attraction between these two, I found the intimate scenes -- even just kissing, not necessarily the sexier times -- to be.. strangely done. Not to mention Marjorie handed over her virtue in a strangely ambivalent fashion for a well-bred lady of the times. I don't know if they'll be smoothed by the time of publishing or not but they didn't flow very well and some of the more emotional moments fell a little flat to me for the same reason; there didn't seem to be very much, or at least not consistent, resonance in the romance. The chemistry was there but I only truly felt it in the lead-up to their getting together.

The highlights of this story, for me, were definitely the Maxton boys and Mrs. Giswell, Marjorie's companion, who even had her own little highlander experience. A bonus I totally adored.

I definitely intend to read more by this author, book one in this series at the very least, but while this didn't wow me completely, it was very fun and sweet and satisfying.

3.5 "lemons, kittens & kilts" stars

ARC KINDLY PROVIDED BY NETGALLEY FOR A HONEST REVIEW!!

My One True Highlander is a Historical Romance written at its best by Suzanne Enoch. I have been reading Ms. Enoch HR for about 15 years and this is one of her best stories. Its hitting all cylinders that Historical Romance readers love.

Lady Marjorie Forrester is the sister of the newly minted Duke of Lattimer, Gabriel Forrester. She is traveling with her Lady's Companion Hortenia Giswell to be with her brother when he marries. The two stop at a coaching Inn and Marjorie is kidnapped by 3 very unlikely kidnapper. One is the 8 year old Connell Maxton youngest brother of Viscount Graeme Maxton and Chief of his clan. I fell in love with young Connell. He is one of those characters with so much personality that he steals the show. What a cutie loveable little boy. Connell tricks Marjorie into following him and him and his 2 other brothers Brendon and Duglas tie her up and take her to there oldest brother Graeme to ransom her for the much needed money to secure there clan and lands. Graeme had no idea what his younger brothers were up to and the utter mess and complications they have bought on him and them by kidnapping the sister of a Duke. After the death of there father Graeme has been raising his 3 younger brothers and doing the very best he could to hold onto there Clan and there Lands. Now they are in a world of trouble with Lattimer and with the villain of the series Dunncraigh who is also a Duke but wants to control all of the clans and the surrounding lands. Dunncraigh will do anything even murder to be the controlling power.

Marjorie is a lovely well written character. She doesn't loses her wits and she Doesn't become the revengeful shrew like so many other kidnapped characters we read about. She is intelligent and kind and once she finds out that this wasn't Graeme fault or idea and the trouble that this will cause him and his young brothers she does everything she can to help them. Graeme is a romantic handsome and kind loving hero. All Alpha Male but with that sexy soft touch. The two fall in love in a very believable way. The few sex scenes are hot and sexy but not overly done or trashy. I just love these two they made the perfect story book romance.

My One True Highlander can be read alone. It Stands on its own merits and will give you enough back story from bk 1 that you don't feel lost at all. This story is very well written with great characterization. The scenes in the story are well done and you can actually see them in your minds eye.

I Highly Recommend "My One True Highlander" and I will purchase the kindle edition when it becomes available on April 4 2017!!

It is such a satisfying experience to read a good book. The kind of book you finish, but continue to think about. I adore Ms. Enoch's style of writing and have read many of her novels. My One True Highlander is another book going into my collection. Lady Marjorie, the heroine, was unique and thoroughly enjoyable to get to know. She was intelligent, courageous and, loving. I also liked how Ms. Enoch did not go into great detail describing what Lady Marjorie was wearing. I do enjoy that style of writing. However, it was refreshing to read about a heroine recognized for her cleverness. Our hero, Graeme, was also exceptional in the way he treated his younger brothers with both patience, and sense of humor. Much to his credit, Graeme made the safety of his young brothers his first priority. He provided a loving environment for his family, one in which the boys were able to grow and flourish. I found it precious the way Graeme allowed his youngest brother to foster orphaned animals. What a touching addition to an already well-written story. Ms. Enoch did a wonderful job writing snappy dialogue, developing all the characters and their relationships with each other, providing a solid story with a nice pace. My One True Highlander has it all, adventure, gentleness, humor, steamy love scenes, and of course, a happy ending.
