This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended

An enjoyable late summer read, set on Nantucket and spanning decades (from the 1940s-2013) of summers for one family. While there is a romance the novel is much more about family, friendship and being rooted in one place. The characters and relationships are complicated but quite compelling.

I loved this book! All of the main characters were fantastic and so well written with all of their character flaws on display. The story is about a house and the women who lived in it. They tried to live their lives as well as they could despite issues that were going on in the world outside their door. I have read all of Michelle Gable's books and they are all fantastic. Happy Reading!

Trying really hard to catch up on a few older ARCs

Story on Nantucket Yes please
This one started out so strong with a kooky, eccentric mother living in a home (Cliff House) that is falling into the ocean a daughter trying to figure out how to get her mother to let the house go What I loved about the story was the historical fiction part the letters in the Book of Summers! The relationship between Cis and Bess didn't develop and went no where it just fell felt. By midway I was kinda bored and hope it would pick up again
This one wasn't for me but as I always say give it a try it might be just the book for you.

My thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

St. Martin's Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Book of Summer. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

Generations of secrets are hidden within the pages of the Cliff House guest book, which Bess uncovers while helping her mother pack her belongings. The novel travels between generations of women and uncovers their connections to Cliff House, from grandmother Ruby, to mother Cissy, and to daughter Bess. As the land surrounding Cliff House erodes, threatening to take everything that Cissy holds dear, will she be able to preserve the family's heritage and dignity?

I usually love historical fiction for its rich descriptions of days gone by, but The Book of Summer did not evoke such a connection to the past. This novel seemed to be more about the scandal than about history. The crumbling relationship between Cissy and Bess is echoed in the destruction of Cliff House, with the constant bickering serving mainly as a distraction. I wanted to be drawn into the past, as well as the beachside community on Nantucket, but The Book of Summer was not successful in these areas. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend The Book of Summer to other readers.

I read Michelle Gable's first book and it was OK. From the cover of her new book, I thought this one would be a knockout. However I was disappointed. First of all, I don't really like books that are set in the past and this one shifted from 1940's to present time. I just couldn't connect with the book or the characters, so I didn't even finish the book. Hope the next author's book is better. Or if it always has historic stories, perhaps this author isn't for me.

I was originally attracted to this book by the cover. It was so beachy and inviting I knew that it was the perfect book for me. I did love the strong female characters and who doesn't love a book set in Nantucket, but I could not connect with the book as a whole.

The Book of Summer is the story of Cliff House in Nantucket and the family that has lived in the house for centuries. The story is told from the past and present about the women who owned Cliff House and their families. The past story is of Ruby and her family in the 1940's as World War II is starting. The present is the story of Cissy as she tries to save her family home from falling of the cliff. . I found the story interesting and it is the perfect beach read. Than you to the publisher and netgalley fo an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Amazing women’s fiction with an alternating storyline told in the 1940’s and 2013. The House of Summer really evokes the feeling of Nantucket and the dichotomy between island people and summer people. In addition it paints a picture of privileged life pre-WWII and how life changed with the war. I was enthralled with Ruby, Cissy, and Bess.

I thought this book was good.. I liked that it told the stories about the 1940's and then it went current.

Firstly, can I say that I got a little confused between all of the characters and timelines in the beginning? Saying that, it all started to come around for me as I delved further into the storyline and all became clear. I really enjoyed the sense of mystery, what went down in the past.. This really kept me wanting more and more, I couldn't put it down!

I honestly could tell by the writing of the first 2 chapters that it wouldn't be a good fit for our box and had to put it down. I may read it again in the future!

Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed the dual-time period story and sounds of the historical portions of the book. Sometimes I found the bantering between Bess and Cissy to be a bit much.

This family drama takes place on Nantucket, where the past is never far away. Bess must convince her grandmother to flee their precarious family home, slowly slipping off a bluff. As she cleans out the house, she discovers that there are mysteries in her family's past that she needs to unravel to protect their future.

At first I thought this was just a sweet Nantucket summer love story. But then as I got more into the book, I realized it had a lot more depth! It follows two distinct storylines, one during World War II, and one in present day, that link a family together. There are some interesting social issues, some definite family secrets, and some surprises along the way, all of which make the story a lot more interesting than first expected. The Book of Summer is an actual book kept by a family over the years at their summer estate built on a cliff that is now in danger of falling into the ocean due to erosion. The house and the book are almost like characters in the book. And you care about them, along with the people that revolve around them. A nice solid read.

A story about a Nantucket area summer home that's been in the family for generations, but sits on a cliff that is gradually eroding away. And the people who lived there, who vacationed there, who try to save it. A story about holding on, and giving way. About staying, and about leaving. With an ending that leaves you wondering how it will all turn out.

Unfortunately, I had to abandon this one. Based on the description, I thought this would be a fun, light read, but it just didn’t do it for me. 25% in and not much happened. Not a ton of character development. Just fell flat.

My second book by Ms. Gable and what I loved most about this story is the true Nantucket character that comes through in the personalities in the book. The author deftly moves back and forth between 2 times lines, that of Bess and her mother Cissy in present day and that of Ruby, Bess's grandmother just prior to WWII. It's all surrounding Cliff House, the family home, which is perched to be pitched into the sea if something can't be done to save it. The cover is one of the best of the new books coming for summer, too. It makes me want to start planning a Nantucket get-a-way soon!

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

When Bess receives a call from her father asking her to go to Nantucket and convince her mother to move out of the home her grandparents built 99 years ago before it falls into the sea, Bess agrees. Still, seeing that the backyard is gone takes her by surprise when she arrives in Nantucket. Bess does everything in her power to convince Cissy to move and gets some unexpected help from her high school boyfriend, Evan. The story goes back and forth between the modern day and her grandmother Ruby's experiences at the house during World War II.

The two story lines are equally strong; I found myself getting immersed in both of them. I loved the idea of people staying at the house wring in the Book of Summer. Readers of women's fiction will love this story.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is interesting as it goes back and forth from present day to the World War Two era and shows us how members of the same family respond. Entertaining. I enjoyed reading the afterword and learning this is based on real life happenings.
