Avenged is the second installment in the Arnaud Legacy mysteries. I was given an ARC of Avenged and didn't know that there was a book prior to this one. If I had known I might have understood some of the parts in the book where references were made. Not to say that these parts completely drew away from the actual story, but I believe reading the first book would've helped.
Avenged is a slightly creepy and intriguing book with a deep mystery that I assume will be resolved in the third installment. This book is more about the servant girl, Eleanor and is narrated through her but also expertly weaves in the insights of the other two characters - Miles and Phoebe.
I really enjoyed reading Avenged and the fact that the main three characters are ghosts and are sort of haunting the Arnaud family in the story. They're not really menacing or horrible ghosts, rather, they are trying to solve their own deaths and why they haven't :"crossed over". You'll understand why as the story gets closer to the end and it is deliciously told through flashbacks and memories of these three ghosts. Eleanor is a sweet and kind ghost, stuck in her servant/maid persona and tries to help others cross over even though she herself can't. She pines for her lost love after all these years and you see some competition between her and Phoebe.
I would love to read the third installment just to see if Eleanor and her friends get their "happily ever after" ending.

Avenged by lynn carthage.
Long ago I was a servant girl at the great manor house in the quiet English villageof Grenshire. My mistress, Madame Arnaud, proved cruel, and many died at her hands. To stop her, I tried to kill her.
I failed. And I lost everything.
But that was then. Now, Phoebe Irving's family has moved into the Arnaud Manor.Phoebe, her friend Miles, and I crossed paths and discovered a powerful connection.Together we might be strong enough to untangle an ancient prophecy hanging over thistroubled place where old, deep magic mingles with greed and revenge. We might save Phoebe's baby sister and other innocents. We might even save ourselves.
A really enjoyable read with great characters. I loved Eleanor. This would make a great movie. Seeing ghost and the evil there. Really had me engrossed. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.

I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion to The Arnaud Legacy Trilogy. Three ghosts are trying to work together in order to fulfill a prophecy written in an English dialect so old google translate won't work. The author did a great job in how her characters interacted with each other through dialogue, body language and flashbacks. Their interactions with people and how that could happen was done on a level that could be 'believable' given the material. It was a very satisfying conclusion to a well thought out trilogy and I particularly enjoyed the surprise twist connected to one of Britain's best histories.
