Ever Lasting is told in the first-person narrative, where the two souls of Allie and Cole would also reincarnate and destined to fall in love with each other. Until this reincarnation, Allie didn’t feel what Cole felt. Refusing to force false feelings from Allie, Cole decided to distance himself from the one person that he swore to love.
Even though Ever Lasting is the third title in the Cursed series penned by author Odessa Gillespie Black, I felt I got the concept without reading the prior books in the series. Reading other books with the same plotline I thought that Odessa Gillespie Black does a wonderful job of developing the plotline and characters.
I have a confession to make. Until shelving Ever Lasting on GR, I didn't know that this was the third in a series. Now that I know, it all makes so much more sense. I initially struggled a bit with the Allie and Cole connection, but now knowing this is the third in a series, I can look back and appreciate the way the author incorporated their back story into this new novel. I'm sure had I read the first 2, Ever Lasting would have been over the top good. So, in reality or in my mind, Ever Lasting can certainly be enjoyed as a stand alone, or read and enjoyed without having to read the previous novels, although I would pick them up in a heartbeat too.
On to the story. First, what a pretty cover. It reels you in. And the description-soulmates? Who isn't down for the soulmate, star crossed lovers kind of situation? It makes for such an intense and satisfying story and Ms. Black pulled that off with finesse here.
The novel opens with Allie and Cole as children, and in this life, (and I think all the rest he is cursed to this kind of fate) Cole remembers his and Allie's past lives together. It was interesting reading the chapter from his adolescent point of view as he's beginning to remember who Allie is to him and how he handles the situation.
From there, the novel moves along pretty quickly. The reader gets to see inside Cole's and Allie's head, which I love. It makes things so much more dramatic when you know, rather than assume, how the other person is feeling. I loved to read what Allie and Cole was feeling, going through. All their longing, torment, heartache, love. It was solid.
I'm not going to give away any spoilers, but I'd highly recommend this novel and series as well, to lovers of YA Romance with a paranormal flare. Ever Lasting was a wonderful romance and I eagerly await the next in the series!
