I was drawn in by the description, and wow what a novel! loved the premise. such a dark and disturbing tale, but done well. excellent.
The Roanoke Girls kept me on my toes. I was very unsure about what may have happened, in the past and the present, but the characters kept me hooked, wanting to know what had taken place. It wasn't a comfortable read, given what had been going on in their family for so long, but it was a suspenseful, gripping read.
“You know your family’s fucked up, right?” he asked. “Like, seriously screwed.” The Ranoke Girls by Amy Engel. A now and then novel that's a good read, but not pleasant in its revelations.
This book is very dark, and dealt with very difficult themes and situations, but I thought it was handled well. I always enjoy books that have interesting and layered characters, and the characters in this book were very flawed but fascinating to read about. Overall, I think this was a worthwhile read!
This is not YA but rather Amy Engel's transition into adult literature.
I was hooked on this from the very first page. There is something about Engel's writing that draws me in to her twisted little worlds. The characters in this are interesting, the twists are heartbreaking and the mystery has you internally screaming WTF as every new detail emerges.
Highly recommend.
This was a strange book! The Roanoke family secret is alluded to early on and while I wasn't as outraged as other readers appear to be, it's still tricky subject matter that I thought the author navigated quite well.
I can't wait for this book to be released so that I can sell it like mad... Books with this kind of taboo subject matter don't come along very often, it has an almost forbidden quality to it which is very alluring and mysterious. The story unfolds rather nicely and in quite a clever way, it's got the thrills for the people after a little bit of domestic-noir and it also has the more literary qualities to get you thinking. It's the kind of book that you'll want to tell all your friends about... I loved it!
