Book blurb...
The second in a trilogy of fast-paced, high-stakes thrillers by the international bestselling author Emelie Schepp, Marked for Revenge involves the international drug trade and child trafficking and features the brilliant, enigmatic prosecutor Jana Berzelius, whose own dark past has, until recently, been hidden even from herself.
When a Thai girl overdoses smuggling drugs, the trail points to Danillo, the one criminal MMA-trained public prosecutor Jana Berzelius most wants to destroy. Eager to erase any evidence of her sordid childhood, Berzelius must secretly hunt down this deadly nemesis with whom she shares a horrific past.
Meanwhile, the police are zeroing in on the elusive head of the long-entrenched Swedish narcotics trade, who goes by the name The Old Man. No one has ever encountered this diabolical mastermind in person; he is like a shadow, but a shadow who commands extreme respect. Who is this overarching drug lord? Berzelius craves to know his identity, even as she clandestinely tracks Danillo, who has threatened to out her for who she really is. She knows she must kill him first, before he can reveal her secrets. If she fails, she will lose everything.
As she prepares for the fight of her life, Berzelius discovers an even more explosive and insidious betrayalone that entangles her inextricably in the whole sordid network of crime.
My thoughts…
The ‘Marked’ trilogy will leave its mark on lovers of crime fiction. I’m enjoying this series very much. Once again, the author delivered a gripping storyline that grabbed me from the start, as all good fiction novels should. But great fiction novels keep readers captivated throughout, and this one did that in spades. This second story in a trilogy was every bit as powerful as the first, Marked for Life. In reviewing Marked For Life last year I wrote: "This novel is the first in what I’m predicting will be an exciting trilogy. I was totally captivated and drawn into the story and will definitely read the next two books.”
Prosecutor, Jana, is living on a knife’s edge, making her weapon choice as interesting as her double life. In this novel readers are transported to the depths of a dark corner of the community with drugs and crime, and follow Jana on an ever diminishing circle that brings the prosecutor with a double life, Jana, closer to her past.
In this book, the 'after hours’ lives of the investigating police are revealed in more detail to show their personal web of deceit. The crimes are less horrific in Marked for Revenge than in the first book, with the plot driven more by the investigation and Jana’s search.
I look forward to the third book with anticipation.
This review will be placed on my blog shortly.
Emelie Schepp kept her previous book going in this book by affectively taking Jana Berzelius and Danilo's childhood and bringing us up to date in their lives. While at the same time all the other characters in her previous book such as Gunnar, Anneli, Henrik, Mia and Ola, also bring us up to date with them. She involves you with each of the characters lives. Revolving the story around each of the characters so you become part of the story. It's a gruesome story but it's worth reading it.
