Baa is a happy little sheep that nibbles grass into different shapes. It's a fun read for any little guy or gal.
Baas Shapes is a board book written by M.J. Burke and illustrated by Jake Tebbit. Meet Baa, a sweet and somewhat mixed-up sheep, who has a knack for getting into interesting situations, doing things in the most unexpected way, and smiling through it all. Baa’s favorite food is bright green grass and there is a whole field ready to be nibbled. Baa, a unique sheep, grazes that grass into shapes!
Baas Shapes is a short, sweet book that helps teach shapes. I really enjoyed the little hidden surprises in the illustrations- such as creatures like frogs and snails for young children to search for an find on each page. I think the happy little sheep, combined with the crisp colors, and value for teaching shapes makes this a perfect little book for the job. Some of the words might be tough for those trying to read independently, I think as a shared read will make this a hit. While it is not so incredibly new of an idea to knock my socks off, I enjoyed the book and think that the youngest set of readers will enjoy the book as well.
This is a very, very simple book. It just has basic shapes, but it’s more interesting than the ususal “This is a square” “This is a circle” book.
This is a really cute and very short book. But it is educational. It teaches the 4 main shapes, square, circle, triangle, and rectangle. The book features Baa a happy little sheep who enjoys munching on grass. While munching he turns the grass into the different shapes. After his busy day he takes a nap on the small square of grass he has left. Cute and quick story for children from 1 to 4 and even new readers.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
A very cute board book for toddlers just learning to identify basic shapes.
Baa is an adorable, happy little sheep that loves to nibble on the grass around him. What is very cool about Baa is that he is a very creative nibbler... he creates shapes as he munches away. How fun is that?
Little ones will delight in the watercolour illustrations and all the added details that are added to each page. Small children can name and learn the shapes that Baa so artistically creates. His talented chomping style results in the perfect square, triangle, circle and rectangle configurations. Finally satisfied after all his hard work Baa curls up, counts sheep I'm sure, and falls fast asleep with a smile on his face.
I highly recommend this board book geared towards ages 0+.
There's really not a lot to say about this book, it's about a sheep eating shapes in the grass, a square, circle, triangle, and a rectangle. The story is simplistic as expected, and it gets the job done with cute illustrations. I wish there was more to it than just pointing out a shape, but still, it gets the job done in pointing out what a shape is.
I liked how Baa made more shapes from the square, getting children to think about shapes. There was not enough content to this story to really engages children. The last line of the book was cute.
“Baa’s Shapes” was adorable, and I would definitely read it at Baby Storytime. However, I wish there would have been heart and diamond shapes, too!
Very sweet story that helps to teach little ones about shapes. Adorable illustrations and lovely bright colors.
Baa is a unique sheep. His favourite food is grass, nothing out of the ordinary here, but he grazes and munches the preferred herbivore delight into shapes.
A bit of nibbling at the corners and a square turns first into a circle, then a triangle, a small rectangle and finally we are back to “square one”.
Of course, the last square is much smaller, Baa was hungry and has eaten most of the grass by now.
But what are Baa’s plans for the final small square of grass?
Baa’s Shapes is a very funny and clever idea to teach young kids their first shapes.
Our sheep is a cheerful and very likeable character. Children will enjoy the colourful pictures, as the grassy shapes are bright green and a snail and a bird are also there, watching Baa’s progress.
There’s just one small sentence on every page and at the end all four shapes are shown once more, this time together side by side, which is perfect for young kids to compare and remember the differences.
Finally, the phonetics are also spot on, what better than a sheep showing shapes?
The book is quite short, but my little niece loved it.
This hungry little sheep is going to eat his way through a square, a circle, a triangle, and a rectangle. A cute and simple shape and sheep story.

I am not sure what I was expecting from the book but I was surprised by it. The book had a really fresh feel to it and was simple, endearing and a learning experience. I thought it was a clever concept to have the sheep munch away making the shapes. The subtle placement of the bird and snail was a nice addition to the illustrations and I imagine will be fun for the children to find.
I was disappointed at some of the language in the book, words like cropped and nipped are not typical words that would be used for babies and preschoolers. While it is good to expand vocabulary, they did not come naturally to me as a storyteller.
A lovely read that can be used in both a one on one and group setting.
I was pleased to see that the paper the book was printed on was from sustainable forests.
